Possibly—but as of September 1, 2026, there was no publicly confirmed Brampton project. Bloomberg reported in April that Stellantis and its Chinese partner Leapmotor were discussing Canadian EV production, with Stellantis’ idle Brampton Assembly plant as the focus. Later reporting said the plant remained idle and Stellantis had announced neither a sale nor a manufacturing agreement.
What was reported about Brampton?
On April 1, 2026, Bloomberg reported that Stellantis was discussing Canadian electric-vehicle production options with Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology, and that the discussions focused on the automaker’s idle assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario. The report cited people familiar with the matter. It described a possibility under discussion, not a finalized deal or public commitment. Bloomberg report, archived copy
The distinction matters: the reporting did not identify a vehicle, a production timetable, an investment, or a workforce plan. Nor did it establish whether any vehicles would be manufactured locally from the ground up or assembled from imported components.
Why Leapmotor is a plausible partner
Stellantis and Leapmotor already have a formal international partnership. Stellantis said in May 2024 that Leapmotor International was a Stellantis-led joint venture with a 51/49 ownership split and exclusive rights to export, sell and manufacture Leapmotor products outside Greater China. The companies named the T03 and C10 among the early products planned for the joint venture’s international rollout. That partnership provides a framework for overseas cooperation, but it does not itself confirm Canadian production. Stellantis, May 14, 2024

What the later announcements and reporting clarify
Stellantis’ 2026 partnership update focused on Europe
In May 2026, Stellantis and Leapmotor announced plans to deepen their cooperation, including production plans in Zaragoza and future Leapmotor products at Villaverde in Spain. The announcement did not name Brampton or announce Canadian manufacturing. European plans should not be read as confirmation of the Canadian discussions. Stellantis, May 2026
Brampton was still idle in September
Connect CRE reported on September 1, 2026, that the Brampton plant remained idle and Stellantis had not announced a sale. The company’s stated focus remained finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for the site. Connect CRE reported that the facility had been idle since December 2023 and described it as 2.95 million square feet on 269 acres; those are the publication’s reported site details. China-EV Canada quoted Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin as saying: “Our focus remains on finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for Brampton Assembly.” That is a company statement as quoted in secondary reporting, not an announcement of a Leapmotor agreement. China-EV Canada, September 2, 2026
Other interest in the site is not a confirmed alternative
September reporting also described inquiries from other parties. Connect CRE reported that Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown told Bloomberg that BYD had inquired about bus production; it also said Leapmotor International and other organizations had expressed interest in the site. These accounts indicate inquiries, not a signed sale, lease, formal bid or selected use. Bus production is distinct from the reported possibility of Leapmotor passenger EV production. What remains unknown
By September 1, 2026, available public reporting had not established whether Stellantis and Leapmotor’s earlier discussions were still active. It also had not confirmed:
- A signed agreement for Brampton, or a sale or lease of the plant.
- Which Leapmotor model, if any, might be built there.
- The investment amount, production start date or expected output.
- Whether production would involve full local manufacturing or final assembly using imported kits.
- Any job, hiring, recall or union commitment.
- Government approval specific to a Brampton project.
Until those details are announced, the most accurate description is that Canadian production at Brampton was reported as an option under discussion—not a confirmed Leapmotor launch or a settled plan for the plant.
