The company says it developed key systems for the Bugatti Tourbillon and, with BMW, a battery system for the BMW i7. Those programs demonstrate engineering work across very different vehicles. They do not establish competitive cost, high-volume manufacturing capacity, or an advantage over Chinese suppliers.
What Rimac Technology does beyond Rimac-branded cars
Rimac is not only a maker of high-performance cars. Rimac Technology supplies automotive systems to other manufacturers, a role that can give an automaker access to specialist engineering without requiring it to develop every component and capability entirely in-house.
That distinction matters: the evidence here concerns Rimac Technology’s announced supplier and development work, not proof that every Rimac Group business operates as a mass-market automotive supplier. Rimac Automobili’s March 11, 2026 newsroom account reported that the Rimac Group had grown to more than 2,000 people. That is the company’s reported headcount, not an audited figure, and it does not by itself demonstrate the production capacity of Rimac Technology.
Two partnerships show different kinds of capability
The Tourbillon and BMW i7 programs are not like-for-like projects. One is a limited-production hybrid hypercar; the other is a BMW passenger car battery program. Together they illustrate the range of work Rimac says it can perform, but they do not provide a direct comparison of cost, output, or results.

For the Tourbillon, the announced work spans energy storage, electric drive, and control systems in an 800V hybrid vehicle. For BMW, the announced contribution is a battery system developed jointly with the automaker. The difference is important: these examples suggest that Rimac can participate in complex programs in more than one way, not that the company supplies an identical solution across vehicle classes.
Why that could help automakers facing China
Automakers under pressure to electrify need engineering, component integration, and dependable routes from development into manufacturing. A capable outside partner can potentially fill gaps or accelerate a program, while the automaker retains responsibility for its vehicle, brand, and commercial strategy. Rimac’s announced projects with Bugatti and BMW make that supplier model tangible rather than hypothetical.

Rimac Technology also announced that it displayed solid-state battery solutions and next-generation e-axles at IAA Mobility in September 2025. That shows the company’s stated technology direction and what it presented at the event; it is not evidence that those solutions are already in mass production or commercially competitive at scale.
The gap in the China comparison is substantial. The available announcements do not compare Rimac with Chinese suppliers on battery or vehicle cost, production capacity, delivery performance, or independently measured technology results. Nor do they show that a partnership with Rimac would let a manufacturer match the price or pace of a Chinese competitor. Without comparable evidence on those points, “solution” is a possibility, not a demonstrated outcome.

What the evidence says—and what it does not
What is supported
- Rimac Technology says it engineered and integrated major electrical and powertrain systems for the Bugatti Tourbillon.
- Rimac Technology and BMW announced a jointly developed battery system for the BMW i7, building on a partnership they say began in 2023.
- The company has publicly presented battery and e-axle technologies beyond those named vehicle programs.
What remains unproven
- That Rimac’s systems cost less than comparable Chinese technology or can be manufactured at equivalent volume.
- That the announced systems have achieved independently verified performance or production outcomes beyond the specifications and plans the companies described.
- That any one supplier can resolve the competitive pressures facing the global auto industry.
These are primary company announcements: useful evidence of stated roles, technical details, and plans, but not independent evaluations. A supplier partnership is a meaningful capability signal; it is not a substitute for data on economics and scale.
Rimac’s changing corporate context
There is also a recent leadership and ownership development. In a September 9, 2026 release, Bugatti said an HOF Capital-led consortium had completed its acquisition of Porsche’s stakes in Bugatti Rimac and Rimac Group, and that Mate Rimac would become President of Bugatti Automobiles. That dated update is relevant context for Rimac’s role in the automotive business, but it does not change what the technology announcements prove about supplier competitiveness.
