But there is no evidence-based universal winner: year, trim, condition, local parts access, and the work each vehicle needs matter more than the badge. A Wrangler may be the better fit if removable doors and roof, its specific trail equipment, or stronger support in your area are priorities.
When a Montero makes the better beater
The case for a Montero is about the particular vehicle and how you plan to use it—not proof that every Montero is cheaper, more reliable, or more capable than every Wrangler. If you want a usable enclosed SUV for road trips, passengers, cargo, and occasional trails, a well-kept Montero may be an appealing alternative to a Wrangler. That value disappears if the vehicle has serious corrosion, deferred maintenance, or hard-to-source parts where you live.
“Beater” should mean an older vehicle you can afford to maintain and use without worrying about cosmetic wear. It should not mean buying the cheapest listing and assuming low purchase price equals low ownership cost. Compare the asking price plus the repairs likely soon, and check parts availability and repair costs locally; the available comparison does not establish current prices or comparative parts access.
Compare the exact vehicles, not the nameplates
“Montero” and “Wrangler” cover multiple years and configurations. Identify the model year, trim, engine, transmission, and 4×4 hardware of each candidate before comparing them. Wrangler equipment changes by generation and trim: Jeep dates the JK unveiling to 2006 and the JL’s first public release to 2018. Autotrader’s buyer guide lists the YJ as 1987–1995, TJ as 1997–2006, JK as 2007–2017, and JL as 2018 onward. For any candidate, verify that the transfer case engages and determine whether it has low range, locking differentials, or limited-slip equipment. Do not infer those features from the 4×4 badge alone. Jeep’s current descriptions illustrate why: its 2026 Wrangler FAQ says Command-Trac is a part-time system with a 2.72:1 low ratio; Rock-Trac has a 4:1 low ratio and may be part-time or full-time depending on configuration. These are 2026 specifications, not descriptions of older Wranglers. Part-time 4×4 is intended for loose or slippery surfaces rather than ordinary dry pavement; follow the specific vehicle’s manual. Use the same discipline for a Montero: verify its actual drivetrain configuration and consult the correct owner’s manual. The available sources do not provide a model-by-model Montero specification comparison, so they cannot establish that a Montero has equivalent hardware to a particular Wrangler.

What the complaint figures do—and do not—say about Montero reliability
ForCar’s analysis of NHTSA complaint records for 1986–2006 Montero model years reports 586 owner complaints, grouped into 289 VIN production runs. It calculates 2.03 complaints per run and lists 192 service-brake complaints as the largest category. ForCar updated its analysis in August 2026. Read ForCar’s Montero complaint analysis.
Those figures are a summary of reports, not a controlled reliability test, a complete record of repair costs, or a prediction of what will happen to an individual Montero. Complaint counts depend on factors such as reporting and the number of vehicles in use. They are not enough to rank specific model years as buys or avoids. Inspect the actual vehicle and its records instead.

How to judge a used candidate
On an older 4×4, condition and maintenance history can outweigh reputation. Arrange an inspection by a qualified mechanic if you cannot confidently assess the vehicle yourself.
- Structure and corrosion: Check the frame, body, and suspension mounting areas for rust or damage.
- Brakes, suspension, and tires: Look for wear, leaks, damage, and evidence of neglected maintenance. ForCar’s complaint analysis makes brake inspection especially sensible, but it does not establish that any particular Montero has a brake defect.
- Drivetrain: Verify that 4×4 modes and low range engage and disengage as intended. Check for leaks and unusual noises.
- Service history: Ask for dated records and compare them with the vehicle’s age, mileage, and condition. A seller’s assurances are not a substitute for documentation.
- Local support: Check whether nearby shops will service the specific vehicle and whether needed parts are available at prices you can accept.
- Expected use: Consider passenger and cargo needs, time on paved roads, trail type, and whether removable doors or a roof matter to you. Prepare either 4×4 before taking it off-road
Jeep’s Beginner’s Guide to Off-Roading recommends checking battery security, hoses, fluid levels, fuel, and tire condition before a trip. Those are sensible checks for an older 4×4, but use the correct manual and specifications for the vehicle you own. Jeep also warns: “Do not attempt water fording unless depth is known and consistent with the vehicle’s water fording rating in the Owner’s Manual.” That is general safety guidance, not a water-depth rating for a Montero or every Wrangler. Which one should you choose?
Choose a Montero if the individual example is clean, documented, mechanically sound, and supported by parts and service in your region—and if an enclosed, practical SUV suits your plans better than Wrangler-specific features. Choose a Wrangler if removable doors and roof, a particular verified 4×4 setup, or local repair and parts support better match your priorities. In either case, compare inspected vehicles and their likely near-term costs, not a Montero’s reputation against a Wrangler’s reputation.
