A March 2, 2026, CarBuzz article republished by Military.com describes a fleet-only, rear-wheel-drive sedan with a naturally aspirated V8 and police-package hardware. That combination makes it an intriguing used-car candidate—but its former fleet life and condition matter at least as much as its performance figures.
Which decommissioned cop car is this?
The headline’s exact vehicle could not be identified. The likely candidate is the sixth-generation Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle, or PPV, described by CarBuzz in an article republished by Military.com on March 2, 2026. That article characterizes the U.S.-market car as a rebadged Holden WM Caprice sold to fleets rather than as a standard retail model. Treat the identification as plausible, not certain.
Specifications and equipment can differ by model year and individual car. Confirm the year, VIN, drivetrain, installed options, and remaining police equipment on the specific vehicle rather than assuming every Caprice PPV matches the example described in the article.
What makes the Caprice PPV appealing?
V8 power and rear-wheel drive
For a 2017 example, CarBuzz reports a naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V8 producing 355 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Those are source-reported figures for that year’s example, not a guarantee for every PPV. Check the individual car’s specifications and condition.

Police-package hardware
The article lists a 2.92 axle ratio with a limited-slip differential, plus police-specific tuning for the shocks, springs, and stabilizer bars. These details help explain the car’s appeal to someone who wants a powerful, practical sedan with fleet-duty equipment. The same source describes cloth front bucket seats shaped to accommodate gun belts, a rear cloth bench, programmable door locks, a dual-note horn, dual-zone air conditioning, remote start, and a tinted windshield. Equipment varies, and some items may have been removed or changed after service.
Can you buy a decommissioned police Caprice?
Former fleet cars can appear through public-surplus auctions and other used-car channels. CarBuzz reported Caprice listings on GovDeals, but current inventory and sale terms are not established here. A listing is an opportunity to investigate, not evidence that a particular car is road-ready or a good deal.

Before bidding or buying, review the title status, auction rules, inspection access, payment deadlines, pickup requirements, and whether the vehicle can be driven away. Include transport and likely repairs in your budget; a low sale price alone does not show the eventual cost of ownership.
What have used examples sold for?
CarBuzz reported these historical sales and listing figures. They illustrate how widely prices and mileage can vary; they are not current market quotes or a valuation for a car you are considering.

The reported examples differ in year, mileage, and likely condition, so they should not be read as directly comparable or as proof that a particular asking price is fair. Assess the car in front of you and check current comparable listings before setting a budget.
Is a used Caprice PPV a good buy?
It can be an appealing prospect if you want a V8, rear-wheel-drive sedan and are comfortable evaluating an ex-fleet vehicle. Whether it is a good buy depends on its mechanical condition, service records, title, remaining equipment, and total cost after transport and repairs. The historical sales above do not establish that Caprices are categorically cheaper or better than other former police cars.

What should you check before buying an ex-police car?
Look beyond odometer mileage
Former fleet cars may have accumulated substantial idle time and may have been driven by multiple operators, according to the CarBuzz article. Ask for maintenance records and any available engine-hour information; compare the answers with the car’s mileage and visible wear. High idle hours or many drivers are not proof of a defect, but they are reasons to examine the vehicle carefully.
Inspect starting and electrical condition
CarBuzz relayed a GovDeals listing that said a car “may require a boost or a new battery to start.” That wording is a seller’s listing description, not an independent diagnosis. Have a technician test the battery and charging system and investigate any no-start or intermittent electrical problem before purchase.

Test the transmission and drivetrain
Another listing relayed by CarBuzz reported that the “transmission loses reverse when it gets warm.” That is a reported symptom, not a confirmed diagnosis, but it is a serious inspection lead. Test the car cold and fully warmed, including reverse engagement, and arrange a qualified inspection if the seller allows it. Do not treat a brief cold start or a short drive as a substitute for checking a reported warm-condition problem.
Verify what remains and what the sale includes
Check whether police-specific components and ordinary convenience features are still present and working. Confirm the differential and axle configuration, suspension parts, seats, locks, horn, air conditioning, remote start, and any equipment removed or altered during fleet service. Also establish what tools, keys, paperwork, and accessories are included in the sale.
Get vehicle-specific evidence
Use the VIN, title documents, maintenance history, inspection findings, and auction terms to evaluate the particular car. The March 2, 2026, CarBuzz article is a useful description of the model and examples, but it does not verify any individual vehicle. A pre-purchase inspection and a realistic repair-and-transport estimate are more useful than assuming that a low-mileage or low-priced listing is automatically a bargain.
