Costco car insurance is an auto policy marketed to members through American Family Insurance—not a policy Costco underwrites or a claims service Costco operates. It may be worth getting a quote if you’re eligible, but membership alone does not guarantee a lower price. Compare the quote with other policies that match its coverage and terms.
How Costco car insurance works
Costco directs members seeking auto insurance to American Family Insurance. Depending on the policy and state, an auto policy may be underwritten by American Family Connect Property and Casualty Insurance Company, American Family Connect Insurance Company, or Midvale Indemnity Company. Costco says it does not underwrite insurance or pay claims. Check the insurer and policy terms shown on your actual quote and policy documents; the company named in them is the one relevant to your coverage.
Members may qualify for a Costco member discount in most states. American Family says a member number is provided when a policy is purchased, but eligibility depends on the applicant’s circumstances and state. Products, prices, benefits, and availability can vary by state and may change.
Costco describes the offering as customizable, with optional coverage and online access to policy documents and insurance ID cards. The policy—not the marketing summary—sets out what is covered, subject to its terms, exclusions, and the facts of a loss.

Potential member benefits and optional coverage
American Family lists several possible benefits and discounts, but eligibility and availability can depend on the state, underwriting company, and qualification rules.
- Executive Member benefits: Roadside assistance and lifetime renewability may be available, subject to limitations and exclusions. Confirm the applicable terms rather than assuming they attach to every policy.
- Possible discounts: Listed examples include safe driving, defensive driving courses, vehicle safety features, garage parking, students, and multiple vehicles. Ask which discounts apply to the quote and what requirements you must meet.
- Optional rental coverage: If selected, it may help pay for a rental during a reasonable period while a covered vehicle is repaired or replaced. The policy determines the coverage and limits.
Claims and customer service
American Family says claims can be reported online or by phone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Its auto-claim FAQ says a claims representative will contact the claimant within one business day after a car claim is filed. Those are descriptions of the insurer’s process, not a promise about how quickly a particular claim will be resolved or what it will pay. Coverage and claim decisions depend on the policy and the circumstances of the loss.

There is no clearly dated, original representative rate or customer-satisfaction statistic in the cited material. Costco’s member page says more than 500,000 members have switched their auto insurance coverage to CONNECT, but the page does not clearly date that figure, and it is not a satisfaction rating.

Where coverage is reported unavailable
A July 21, 2026 Kiplinger article reports that the partner auto coverage was unavailable in Alaska, Maine, North Dakota, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Availability can change, so treat this as a dated indication rather than a permanent state list and confirm eligibility using your ZIP code.

Request a quote if you are eligible, particularly if you may qualify for a member benefit. Then compare it against other insurers using the same drivers, vehicles, liability limits, deductibles, and optional coverage. A lower premium is useful only if the policies also provide comparable protection and terms.

- Compare the full cost: Use the actual annual or six-month premium, including fees, and record any eligibility conditions or discounts that could change the amount.
- Check the policy details: Identify the underwriting company and review renewal, cancellation, exclusions, and benefit terms in the quote and policy documents.
- Weigh benefits you will use: Count Executive Member perks only if you qualify and the specific benefit matters to you. Do not treat the Costco membership itself as proof the policy is cheaper.
- Consider claims support without overreading anecdotes: The insurer describes its reporting channels and contact process, while online reviews are individual accounts rather than a reliable forecast of your experience.
Kiplinger’s July 2026 assessment likewise cautions that the offer may not always be the cheapest and recommends shopping around. The practical test is the comparable quote available to you—not a general claim that Costco insurance is the best or least expensive.
