Ecotec is a family name, not one engine, and the available sources do not establish model-by-model failure rates or a defensible top-ten ranking. For a used-car decision, identify the specific engine and model year, check the vehicle’s history and condition, and verify open recalls by VIN.
Why a GM Ecotec badge is not enough to judge reliability
GM used the Ecotec name across multiple engine variants and vehicle applications. A reliability claim about one displacement, engine code or model year does not automatically apply to another. The engine’s RPO—the code identifying the specific configuration—matters alongside the model year and maintenance history.
Consumer Reports says its reliability histories are based on member surveys covering specified model years and trouble areas, including engine problems. Its methodology is not an Ecotec-specific score: the material available here provides no comparable failure rates or reliability scores for ten Ecotec-powered cars. It also cautions that a vehicle’s absence from a reliable-used-car list can mean there is not enough data, rather than that the vehicle is unreliable.
What GM’s 2.4L service bulletin does—and does not—show
GM bulletin PI0865D, published in August 2017, concerns service-engine replacement procedures for specified vehicles equipped with the 2.4L Ecotec engines identified by RPO LAF or LEA. It lists these applications:

In that procedure, GM says the replacement service engine is supplied without certain components, which must be transferred. It also calls for a new high-pressure fuel feed pipe from the pump to the rail, warning: “Do not reuse the original pipe as a fuel leak may develop.” That is a requirement for the specified repair procedure—not evidence that every listed vehicle has had a failure, or that one listed model is less reliable than another.
How to assess a used Ecotec vehicle
- Identify the exact engine. Get the model year, displacement and engine RPO for the vehicle you are considering; do not rely on the Ecotec name alone. If those details are unclear, ask a GM service department or qualified mechanic to confirm them from the vehicle identification and service information.
- Review the maintenance and repair records. Look for dated invoices that identify the work performed and the engine involved. If the vehicle has had a replacement-engine repair covered by PI0865D, ask whether the required parts—including the new high-pressure fuel feed pipe—were handled as specified. The bulletin does not establish that every car needs this repair.
- Have the individual car inspected. Ask an independent mechanic to assess its present condition and review any relevant repair documentation. A family-wide label or a model name cannot establish the condition of a particular used vehicle.
- Check open recalls by VIN. Use GM’s recall center and enter the actual vehicle identification number. Confirm whether an open recall remains; model name alone cannot determine the status of an individual car.
- Keep safety campaigns separate from engine reliability. GM’s Ignition Update FAQ describes a vehicle-specific ignition-switch issue in which a switch could move out of RUN, causing partial electrical-power loss and engine shutdown. That is a distinct safety issue, not proof of a general Ecotec engine defect.
Can you name the ten most reliable Ecotec cars?
Not from the evidence available here. A sound top-ten comparison would need comparable model-level reliability data and clear boundaries for model year, engine variant and, where possible, transmission and maintenance. It would also need to distinguish engine trouble from whole-vehicle reliability. GM’s service bulletin identifies a limited repair application, while recall guidance is vehicle-specific; neither supplies those comparative reliability results.

That does not mean Ecotec-powered cars should be treated as a single unreliable group. It means a ranked list would imply more certainty than the available evidence supports. Evaluate the exact version and the individual car instead.
