New Atlas’s June 2017 review found its pedal assistance smooth and helpful on hills, but also noted fit restrictions, a heavy wheel and a fiddly torque-arm clamp. Its specifications and $1,499 price are launch-era details—not current buying information.
What the Copenhagen Wheel was
Developed by MIT’s SENSEable City team in consultation with the City of Copenhagen, the concept dates to 2009. After delays, the Wheel became commercially available in April 2017, according to New Atlas’s review and Superpedestrian’s April 11, 2017 announcement.
Rather than add a separate motor unit to a bicycle, the system replaced its rear wheel. The motor, battery, sensors, wireless connection and control electronics were integrated into that wheel. Superpedestrian described the assistance as automatically responding to pedaling, with riders choosing modes in an app. The company also said braking could capture energy to recharge the battery; the review did not independently quantify that claim.
What the 2017 US review reported
These figures refer to the US test model described by New Atlas in 2017. They should not be treated as verified specifications for a product currently for sale.

Will it fit your bicycle?
Compatibility is not universal. New Atlas said the reviewed wheel worked with single-speed and 7-, 8-, 9- or 10-speed Shimano or SRAM drivetrains, and that a cassette was included. The reviewed version was not compatible with disc brakes and was not recommended for carbon-fiber frames. Those specifics are more useful than the manufacturer’s broad 2017 description of the product fitting “almost any bike.” Check the exact frame, brakes, drivetrain and wheel size with a knowledgeable bicycle shop before buying a used unit.
Installation and everyday controls
Installation meant removing the bicycle’s rear wheel and fitting the Copenhagen Wheel in its place. The chain and derailleur are part of that job. A torque arm also had to be secured to the chainstay with the included steel hose clamp; the reviewer found that step fiddly and suggested owners might prefer to leave the Wheel installed. By contrast, some front-wheel conversion kits are simpler to fit, though the Copenhagen Wheel used its own torque and cadence sensors rather than requiring an external pedal sensor.

Riders selected Eco, Standard or Turbo assistance using an iOS or Android app paired over Bluetooth. New Atlas reported that the app could track routes, show battery level and lock the wheel. The reviewer tested the motor after turning off the phone and found it continued to work, so the review does not indicate that a live phone connection was needed throughout a ride.
How it rode, according to the reviewer
New Atlas reviewer Ben Coxworth reported that assistance came on smoothly and immediately when he pedaled, and that hills felt easier. He found Eco mode useful, described the build as solid and said the wheel did not rattle over bumps. With assistance switched off, he found the tested 20 lb wheel heavy to pedal. These are the reviewer’s observations, not a present-day independent test.

Should you look for one now?
The Wheel is best understood as a historical conversion product, not a confirmed current e-bike option. Current sales and manufacturer support could not be confirmed from an authoritative current source. Apple’s US App Store listing for the Wheel app still shows a listing, but the latest displayed version, 2.11.7, is dated September 30, 2020. That does not establish that new wheels are sold, that the app works reliably on current phones, or that service and replacement parts remain available.
If considering a second-hand unit, verify that it powers on, pairs with the app on a compatible phone, charges, and fits your bicycle before paying. Ask the seller about battery condition, included charging equipment and any service history; the historical review does not establish present-day battery life, warranty, parts supply or support. Have a shop check compatibility and the torque-arm installation rather than assuming the wheel will fit because it is a rear-wheel replacement.
