For the 2022 model year, some of the most distinctive factory paint options included Ford Mustang Eruption Green Metallic and Mischievous Purple Metallic, Vauxhall Corsa Power Orange, Lexus ES Sunlit Green, and Nissan Pathfinder Obsidian Green Pearl. This is an editorial shortlist—not a universal ranking: each pick stands out for its hue or finish, and the choices were limited to particular models, trims, and markets.
Standout factory colors offered for 2022
Paint names and availability were specific to the model year, vehicle, trim, and market. The examples below draw on period automaker materials; US and UK offerings are identified separately. They are not a complete inventory of every 2022 vehicle color.
| Color and finish | 2022 vehicle and market | Availability notes |
|---|---|---|
| Eruption Green Metallic | Ford Mustang, US | One of eight new colors Ford listed for the 2022 model year. Availability varied by series; consult the period model information for the specific Mustang. |
| Mischievous Purple Metallic | Ford Mustang, US | One of Ford’s new 2022 Mustang colors. Availability varied by series. |
| Brittany Blue Metallic | Ford Mustang, US | Ford restricted this color to the GT500 Heritage and Coastal Editions. |
| Power Orange | Vauxhall Corsa, UK | The guide effective 8 August 2022 listed it as a two-coat premium metallic option for an extra £700, with model and trim restrictions. |
| Sunlit Green | Lexus ES, US | Listed in the 2022 palette. Lexus described the palette as vibrant; that is the automaker’s characterization, not an independent ranking. |
| Morning Mist Blue Metallic | Honda Civic Sedan, US | A new 2022 color. Honda characterized it as a very light blue with a translucent quality and soft gold highlights. |
| Obsidian Green Pearl; Obsidian Green Pearl/Super Black Metallic | Nissan Pathfinder, US | The 2022 press kit lists both a single-color and two-tone scheme. |
| Electric Blue Metallic; Super Black/Monarch Orange Metallic | Nissan Kicks, US | The 2022 press kit lists the blue and the two-tone black-and-orange combination. |
| Army Green | Toyota 4Runner, US | Toyota’s 2022 model-year newsroom summary identifies it as new for the 4Runner; check grade-specific materials for exact availability. |
| Cavalry Blue with a black roof | Toyota RAV4 XSE, US | Toyota’s 2022 model-year summary names this combination for the XSE. |
| High Velocity Metallic Clear Coat; Silver Zynith Metallic Clear Coat | Jeep Wrangler 4xe | Stellantis said these joined the Wrangler 4xe’s 2022 palette; availability depended on trim and roof configuration. |
Why these colors stand out
Green with a performance edge
Ford’s Eruption Green Metallic gives the Mustang a vivid alternative to the familiar neutral palette, while Lexus’s Sunlit Green adds an unusual hue to the 2022 ES range. Nissan’s Obsidian Green Pearl takes a darker, more restrained approach. These are distinct interpretations of green, not interchangeable paint choices: each belongs to a different model and manufacturer.
Purple, orange, and blue for stronger contrast
Mischievous Purple Metallic was among Ford’s new Mustang colors for 2022. Vauxhall’s Power Orange offered a brighter option for the UK Corsa range, though the period guide attached a surcharge and trim limits. Honda’s Morning Mist Blue Metallic was a softer, pale blue; Nissan’s Electric Blue Metallic provided a more saturated alternative on the Kicks.

Two-tone paint changes the whole look
A contrasting roof can be as visually important as the body color. The Pathfinder’s Obsidian Green Pearl/Super Black Metallic scheme and the Kicks’ Super Black/Monarch Orange Metallic combination pair a body hue with a dark roof. Toyota’s RAV4 XSE Cavalry Blue with a black roof is another documented example. Confirm the exact combination and grade rather than assuming the single-color name includes a contrasting roof.
What the 2022 color data says about popularity
Distinctive paint was not the same as the most common paint. Axalta’s 2022 global automotive color report put white at 34% (14% pearlescent white and 20% solid white), black at 21%, gray at 19%, blue at 8%, and green at 1%. White, black, gray, and silver together accounted for 82% in that report. These are industry color-share figures, not a survey of what buyers considered coolest.

BASF’s separate 2022 Color Report for Automotive OEM Coatings analyzed global automotive production and paint application to non-commercial vehicles. It likewise found achromatic colors dominant while yellow, orange, green, and violet gained share. Its methods and category presentation differ from Axalta’s, so the figures should not be combined into one numerical series. The growth of chromatic colors helps explain why a vivid factory option can feel distinctive even when it remains relatively uncommon.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a 2022 color when buying used
- Find the exact vehicle and trim. A color may have been limited to an edition or grade, such as Mustang Brittany Blue on the GT500 Heritage and Coastal Editions.
- Check the market and model-year material. A UK Vauxhall guide does not establish availability in the US, and a US press release does not establish availability elsewhere.
- Verify the individual car. Use the vehicle’s paint code and documentation, and compare the paint in person where possible. A brochure image is not a reliable color match; Vauxhall’s guide specifically warns that reproduced colors may differ from actual paint.
- Check current local listings. A period brochure shows what was offered, not what remains for sale or in stock in 2026. Confirm the specific vehicle’s trim, paint, and condition before making a buying decision.
Axalta’s December 15, 2022 release quoted Robert Schnell, its vice president of Global Sales & Product Management, saying, “Today’s vehicles are more vibrant than ever.” That describes a broader industry impression; it does not mean bold colors overtook neutrals in global popularity.
