Automotive Ethernet, USB, and MOST solve different connection problems: Ethernet supports in-vehicle networking, MOST is designed for multimedia traffic, and USB connects consumer peripherals to vehicle USB sources. They may all carry data, but they are not interchangeable—and USB is not a vehicle-wide network backbone.
What each technology does in a vehicle
| Technology | Primary role | What the cited sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive Ethernet | In-vehicle networking, including backbone and network integration | ITU-T describes Ethernet-based in-vehicle networks integrating with CAN, LIN, MOST, and FlexRay. It identifies bandwidth demand as a reason Ethernet is becoming a major part of electrical/electronic architecture. |
| MOST | Automotive multimedia networking | Microchip describes a synchronous network with quality-of-service support for audio/video streaming, alongside control, real-time, and packet data. |
| USB | Connection between a vehicle USB source and consumer peripherals | SAE USCAR30 specifies performance testing for automotive USB connection systems, including cable assemblies and connections. |
The comparison is about purpose and architecture, not which interface is universally fastest. The cited sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head performance test of all three.
How automotive Ethernet fits into the network
Ethernet is increasingly important because vehicles need to move more data and support real-time communication. ITU-T Recommendation X.1381 (approved 3 March 2023) says Ethernet-based in-vehicle networks can integrate with existing technologies such as CAN, LIN, MOST, and FlexRay. It describes Ethernet as a major part of current and future electrical/electronic architecture, not as a requirement that every vehicle use one identical network design. Read ITU-T X.1381.
Physical channels and timing
Ethernet is more than a software protocol choice: cables, connectors, and the communication channel between devices must also meet performance requirements. ISO 21111-8:2022 addresses electrical 100-Mbit/s Ethernet transmission media, components, and tests for road vehicles. That particular part concerns 100-Mbit/s media; it is not a speed ceiling for automotive Ethernet as a whole. The ISO catalog lists the edition published in August 2022 and indicates that a replacement FDIS is expected, so its status should be checked against the catalog when relying on it. See the ISO catalog entry for ISO 21111-8.

Timing can matter as much as raw data capacity when traffic must arrive predictably. IEEE describes 802.1DG as a time-sensitive networking (TSN) profile for automotive in-vehicle networks, with guidance for bounded latency. The IEEE article is explanatory coverage, not the full standard text. Read IEEE’s automotive TSN overview.
Security is a network-design concern
ITU-T X.1381 is specifically a security-guidelines recommendation for Ethernet-based in-vehicle networks. It notes that countermeasures designed for generic computer networks may not suit automotive requirements and capabilities. That guidance is a reason to treat vehicle-network security as its own engineering problem; it does not, by itself, establish a particular vulnerability or show that a specific vehicle can be exploited.

How MOST handles multimedia and control data
MOST is designed as an automotive multimedia network rather than a general-purpose replacement for every in-vehicle connection. Microchip describes it as synchronous and says it supports quality of service for audio and video streaming. Its specification covers control, real-time, and packet data over one physical medium, according to the company. Read Microchip’s MOST technology description.
That shared medium can use fiber optic cable, unshielded twisted pair (UTP), or coax, according to Microchip. The available evidence describes what MOST is designed to carry and the media it can use; it does not establish how widely it is installed across vehicles or whether it is the current default.

What USB does—and what it does not tell you
In the vehicle context covered here, USB is a peripheral interface: it connects a consumer device to a vehicle USB source. SAE USCAR30 covers performance testing for automotive USB connection systems, including cable assemblies and connections, across development, production, and field analysis. SAE’s listing says the standard was reaffirmed in July 2022. See the SAE USCAR30 listing.
A general USB label or a cable that fits physically does not establish what a particular vehicle port and device will support. The cited standard listing does not specify compatibility for a particular vehicle or peripheral, nor does it establish charging rate or data mode. Check the vehicle and device documentation for the functions of the exact ports involved. If choosing a cable, first determine whether the need is charging, data transfer, or both, and confirm the connector types at each end.

Why the technologies can coexist
The distinction is easiest to understand by tracing the connection. Ethernet links components as part of the vehicle’s network architecture; MOST is a multimedia network that can carry synchronized audio/video and other data; USB links an external consumer peripheral to a vehicle USB source. ITU-T’s discussion of integration with CAN, LIN, MOST, and FlexRay illustrates that automotive networks can combine technologies rather than force every function onto one connection type.
They therefore should not be ranked as substitutes based on a single speed number. Their roles, timing needs, physical media, and system boundaries differ, and the cited standards and vendor description do not provide a common quantitative comparison.
