To connect Bluetooth to your car, put the vehicle’s infotainment system into pairing mode, then choose the car from your phone’s Bluetooth menu. Confirm the matching passcode, approve only the permissions you want, and test calls and media while parked. The exact labels differ by vehicle and stereo, so consult the owner’s manual when the menu does not match.

Do this before driving: Do not handle the phone or adjust the infotainment system while the car is moving. Hands-free calling reduces phone handling but is not automatically risk-free or legal everywhere.

Bluetooth pairing has two parts: put the car’s infotainment system into pairing mode, then select the car from your phone’s Bluetooth settings. Do the setup while parked, with the car on and the phone unlocked. Menu names vary by vehicle, model year, stereo, iPhone version, and Android manufacturer, so use the owner’s manual if your screen does not match these labels.

Safety first: Configure Bluetooth before driving and do not handle your phone while the car is moving. Hands-free connectivity can reduce the need to hold the phone, but it does not make every task risk-free or legal in every jurisdiction. Adjusting the stereo, navigation, or entertainment system can also be distracting. Check your local distracted-driving rules.

Before connecting your phone

  • Park the car. Keep the transmission in Park and the infotainment system switched on while pairing.
  • Keep the phone nearby and unlocked. Bluetooth pairing is normally intended for short range—approximately 33 feet (10 meters) for a typical accessory—but placing the phone near the dashboard helps avoid failed discovery.
  • Know the car’s pairing menu. Look for Phone, Settings, Connections, Bluetooth, Add Phone, or Pair New Device. Some vehicles enter pairing mode by holding the steering-wheel voice-command button.
  • Check existing connections. A headset, speaker, smartwatch, or another phone may already be connected and could capture call or music audio.
  • Remove distractions. If several similarly named vehicles or devices are nearby, confirm that you select your own car.

Step 1: Put the car into Bluetooth pairing mode

  1. Start the vehicle or switch the ignition to the position that powers the infotainment system.
  2. Open the car’s Phone, Settings, or Connections menu.
  3. Choose Add Phone, Pair New Device, Connect Device, or a similarly named command.
  4. Leave the pairing screen visible. A normal Bluetooth audio screen may not make the car discoverable; the system usually needs its dedicated add-device or pairing mode.

Some cars automatically search for a phone after you choose Add Phone. Others display the vehicle’s name and wait for the phone to find it. If the infotainment system offers separate choices for calls and media, choose the general phone-pairing option first.

Step 2: Connect an iPhone

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on. Remain on this screen while the phone searches for nearby devices.
  3. Under Other Devices, tap the name of your car when it appears.
  4. Compare the passcode or PIN shown on the iPhone and the car display. Tap Pair or Confirm only if the codes match.
  5. If asked to share contacts, call history, or notifications, allow only the access you want. Contact access is commonly needed if you want to browse your phonebook from the car’s screen.
  6. Wait for the car to show the phone as connected, then test the connection while still parked.

For many vehicles, pairing must be initiated from the car’s display rather than from the iPhone alone. The vehicle manual is the controlling source for the exact sequence, especially on older or factory-replaced stereos.

Step 3: Connect an Android phone

Android menus differ between manufacturers and Android versions. The wording below is typical, not universal.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connected devices, then Pair new device, or open the phone’s Bluetooth settings directly.
  3. If necessary, tap Pair new device or refresh the available-device list.
  4. Select the car’s name.
  5. Compare the PINs on the phone and car. Tap Pair, Accept, or Confirm only when they match.
  6. Allow contacts and call history if you want hands-free access to your address book. Decline permissions that are not useful for your setup.
  7. Open the settings for the paired car and verify that Phone audio and Media audio are enabled.

Once paired, an Android phone normally remains paired until you manually forget or unpair it and may reconnect automatically when you enter the car. Automatic reconnection depends on the vehicle, phone, and stereo software.

What Bluetooth pairing should provide

Bluetooth can provide one or both of these functions:

Function What it does
Phone audio Routes hands-free calls through the vehicle’s speakers and microphone.
Media audio Routes music, podcasts, navigation prompts, and other phone audio through the stereo.

Not every vehicle supports both profiles. Some older systems handle hands-free calls but not music streaming; others may support media playback without full Bluetooth calling. If one function is missing, check the stereo’s specifications or owner’s manual rather than assuming the phone is defective.

Test calls and music before driving

  1. On the car stereo, select Bluetooth as the audio source rather than FM, AM, USB, or AUX.
  2. Play a short song or podcast. Confirm that sound comes from the car speakers.
  3. Make a brief hands-free call to a safe test contact. Confirm that the car microphone and speakers work.
  4. Adjust both the phone volume and the car’s volume. Some vehicles remember separate volume levels for calls and media.
  5. End the test before moving the vehicle. Do not troubleshoot by handling the phone in traffic.

Bluetooth versus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Ordinary Bluetooth is not the same as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth is usually enough for basic hands-free calls and wireless audio. CarPlay and Android Auto are broader vehicle-screen integrations that can add maps, messages, compatible apps, and voice control.

Android Auto

Wireless Android Auto may use Bluetooth during the initial setup, but it also requires a compatible phone and vehicle and can rely on Wi-Fi and Location Services. Complete the first connection while the car is in Park. A car that supports Bluetooth calls does not necessarily support wireless Android Auto.

Apple CarPlay

Wired CarPlay uses a compatible USB port. Wireless CarPlay setup may begin with the steering-wheel voice-command button or through Settings > General > CarPlay, depending on the vehicle. Bluetooth pairing alone does not guarantee that CarPlay is available.

In short: pair Bluetooth for calls and audio; use CarPlay or Android Auto when your car and phone support the additional interface you want.

Troubleshooting Bluetooth pairing

The car does not appear on the phone

  • Confirm that the car is in its dedicated Add Phone or Pair New Device mode.
  • Turn Bluetooth off on the phone, wait about five seconds, and turn it back on.
  • Restart the phone and the car’s infotainment system.
  • Move the phone close to the dashboard and temporarily turn off or move competing Bluetooth devices.
  • Check the owner’s manual for the vehicle’s exact discovery process. Some systems will not appear until the car has been told to search for a phone.

Pairing fails after a code appears

  • Check that the PIN or passcode shown on both screens is identical before accepting.
  • Make sure you are selecting the intended vehicle, not a nearby car with a similar name.
  • Delete the old vehicle entry from the phone and delete the phone from the car’s stored-device list. Then start over.
  • Remove unused phones if the car’s device list is full.
  • Do not assume a code such as 0000 or 1234 will work; there is no universal PIN for every vehicle.

Music connects, but calls do not

  • On Android, open the paired-car settings and enable Phone audio.
  • On iPhone, check the audio route during a test call and confirm that the car is selected.
  • Review the vehicle’s phone settings and verify that the system supports Bluetooth calling, not just media streaming.
  • Disconnect another phone or headset that may be taking over the call profile.

Calls work, but music does not

  • On Android, enable Media audio for the paired car.
  • Select Bluetooth as the source on the vehicle stereo.
  • Raise the volume on both the phone and car.
  • Check whether another paired device is currently selected for media output.
  • Confirm that the vehicle supports Bluetooth music playback; some systems do not.

The phone connects intermittently

  • Install available phone operating-system updates and check whether the stereo has a firmware update.
  • Forget the car on the phone, delete the phone from the car, restart both systems, and pair again.
  • Reduce the number of stored phones if the vehicle handles its device list poorly.
  • Keep the phone away from unusual sources of interference and near the dashboard during testing.
  • If the problem continues, contact the vehicle manufacturer or stereo maker. Compatibility and firmware behavior are model-specific.

What to do if the car has no built-in Bluetooth

A phone setting cannot add Bluetooth hardware to an older stereo. The appropriate solution depends on the inputs and features your car already has:

Universal Bluetooth car adapter

A universal Bluetooth car adapter is commonly powered from a 12-volt outlet and sends phone audio to the stereo through an unused FM frequency. Before buying, check how the adapter handles calls, whether its microphone is suitable for your cabin, how it is powered, and whether you can find a clear FM frequency in your area. Follow local laws and use it only after setup is complete.

AUX Bluetooth receiver

An AUX Bluetooth receiver is appropriate when the factory stereo has a 3.5-mm auxiliary input. The receiver normally needs its own power source, such as USB power. Verify whether the particular receiver supports hands-free calling as well as music: some are intended only for media and do not include a useful microphone.

Vehicle-specific factory-radio adapter

A vehicle-specific Bluetooth adapter can integrate with a compatible factory radio while preserving the original dashboard appearance. Fitment depends on the make, model, year, radio version, and sometimes an existing CD changer or satellite-radio connection. Installation may require wiring or removal of dashboard trim, so verify compatibility before purchase and consider a professional Bluetooth stereo installation if you are not comfortable working behind the radio.

Replacement Bluetooth stereo

An aftermarket Bluetooth head unit is the larger upgrade. It may add hands-free calling, wireless music, and sometimes CarPlay or Android Auto. Confirm the correct single-DIN or double-DIN fit, wiring harness, microphone placement, steering-wheel-control support, backup-camera integration, and retention of factory features. Replacing the stereo is not necessary when the car’s built-in Bluetooth already works.

When to check the owner’s manual

Use the manual whenever the car’s menus do not match these instructions, pairing is limited to one phone, the system requests a model-specific code, or calls and media behave differently. The manual also identifies supported Bluetooth profiles, device-list limits, firmware-update procedures, and whether the vehicle supports wireless CarPlay or Android Auto.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Bluetooth in a car let me do?

Bluetooth pairing usually provides hands-free calls and may provide music, podcasts, and navigation audio. Some vehicles support only one of those functions, so check the stereo manual if calls or media are missing.

Is Bluetooth the same as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto?

No. Bluetooth pairing is separate from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Those systems require additional vehicle and phone compatibility and provide a broader screen-based interface.

How do I reset a failed car Bluetooth connection?

Park first, then delete the old phone from the car and forget the car on the phone. Restart both systems, put the car into its dedicated pairing mode, and pair again. Remove unused phones if the car’s device list is full.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I add Bluetooth to an older car?

No. If the stereo has no Bluetooth hardware, use a compatible universal FM adapter, an AUX Bluetooth receiver if the stereo has a 3.5-mm input, a vehicle-specific adapter, or a replacement stereo.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Put the car into Add Phone or Pair New Device mode, select it under your iPhone’s Bluetooth settings or Android’s Pair new device menu, confirm the matching code, and test both music and calls while parked. If only one function works, check the separate Phone audio and Media audio settings and confirm that the vehicle supports the missing feature.
