For the U.S. 2024 model year, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) lists 21 plug-in hybrid model and variant entries. They range from a minivan and family SUVs to luxury sedans and performance cars. This is a model-year list, not a live inventory feed: it does not confirm that every vehicle was sold in every state or remains available new today. The EPA notes that some EVs and PHEVs are not available in all 50 states, so check local dealers for current availability.
Which plug-in hybrids were available in 2024?
These are the 21 PHEV entries in the DOE AFDC’s U.S. model-year 2024 table. Grouping them by body style helps narrow the field, but does not imply that every variant has identical equipment or specifications.

How far can a 2024 plug-in hybrid go on electric power?
Three AFDC entries provide useful reference points: the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime/SE is listed with 40–45 miles of all-electric range, the Toyota RAV4 Prime AWD with 42 miles, and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with 38 miles. These are model-year table figures, not promises of the distance a driver will achieve in everyday use. The AFDC lists a $28,770 base MSRP for the Prius Prime/SE, $43,440 for the RAV4 Prime AWD, and $40,345 for the Outlander PHEV; these are source-table base prices, not current transaction prices.

The EPA describes its range estimates as guidance for comparing vehicles. Cold weather, high speeds, and accessory use such as air conditioning can significantly reduce electric range. What to compare beyond electric range
The AFDC list spans sedan and wagon, SUV, and van body styles; FWD, RWD, AWD, and 4WD drivetrains; and five-, six-, and seven-seat configurations. The right fit depends on how you drive and what you need to carry, not simply which entry has the longest electric range.

- Electric range: Compare the rated distance with your usual daily driving, allowing for weather, speed, and accessory loads.
- MPG and MPGe: MPG describes gasoline-mode fuel economy, while MPGe describes electricity-mode efficiency. They measure different operating modes and should not be compared as if they were the same unit.
- Total range and fuel use: Consider how often you make longer trips and how the vehicle behaves after its battery charge is depleted.
- Seats and body style: Check the seating count and the car’s passenger and cargo layout against your regular needs.
- Drivetrain: Match FWD, RWD, AWD, or 4WD to your priorities and conditions; drivetrain labels alone do not establish how a vehicle will perform in every situation.
- Charging capability and time: Charging data is not reported for every entry in the AFDC table. Confirm the chosen model’s charging limits and expected charge time with its manufacturer.
- Price: Treat AFDC base MSRP as a model-year reference, not as a quote for current dealer stock or a final transaction price.
How PHEVs use electricity and gasoline
The EPA defines plug-in hybrids this way: “Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are a combination of gasoline and electric vehicles, so they have a battery, an electric motor, a gasoline tank, and an internal combustion engine.” Their precise driving behavior varies. Some operate exclusively or almost exclusively on electricity until the battery is nearly empty, then use gasoline; others use gasoline and electricity together while charge remains. Do not assume that every PHEV follows the same pattern.
EPA vehicle labels show electricity-mode efficiency in MPGe and gasoline-mode efficiency in MPG. The figures represent separate modes rather than interchangeable measures. The label’s charging-time estimate assumes 240-volt service for vehicles that can accept it; charging from a lower-voltage outlet takes longer.
