A compact may be described casually as small, but when the classification matters, check the category shown for the specific vehicle and model year.
What does “compact car” mean?
In the United States, “compact” is one of the car-size categories used in EPA fuel-economy information. The EPA’s 2027 Fuel Economy Guide lists minicompact, subcompact, compact, midsize, and large cars as distinct classes. The EPA gasoline-label explanation describes the vehicle category as part of the label’s fuel-economy comparison.
Is a compact car the same as a small car?
Not necessarily. “Small car” is a general description whose meaning can vary with the speaker, market, or comparison. The EPA materials establish “compact” as a category, but do not establish “small car” as a single category equivalent to compact. In casual conversation, someone might call a compact small; for an official classification, use the specific category rather than the adjective.

How does compact compare with subcompact?
In the EPA’s listed car classes, subcompact is below compact; minicompact is also listed below compact. These are separate categories, so “compact” does not simply mean “the smallest car.” The names indicate an order within that EPA classification, not a universal size vocabulary for every country or vehicle system.

Why the classification system and model year matter
EPA fuel-economy labels identify a vehicle category and show best- and worst-in-class fuel-economy values for the relevant model year. Those comparisons are tied to that year’s data, so check the label or official data for the particular vehicle and model year rather than treating a category as a timeless size measurement.
Classification also depends on purpose. The EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report distinguishes regulatory car and truck classes from vehicle-type groupings; SUV treatment can differ between those systems. A body shape, a manufacturer’s informal description, or a segment name used in another country therefore does not by itself establish a vehicle’s EPA car class.

Does compact have a fixed cubic-foot threshold?
A historical EPA rulemaking published on November 10, 1976 defined compact cars, within the passenger-car size scheme applicable at that time, as having an interior volume index from 100 to less than 110 cubic feet. That dated definition is historical context, not a current universal cutoff. The cited current EPA material does not establish a general numeric threshold for compact cars that should be applied across model years or classification systems. The historical figure appears in the November 10, 1976 Federal Register rules and regulations.

How to identify a car’s category
- Choose the classification you need. For U.S. fuel-economy label comparisons, use the EPA classification; do not assume another country’s segment terminology is equivalent.
- Match the model year. EPA category and fuel-economy comparisons are presented in a model-year context.
- Check the vehicle’s official label or EPA data. Use the category stated there rather than inferring it from a casual “small” description or body style.
