The 2nd-gen Dodge Cummins is the 1994–2002 Dodge Ram pickup generation fitted with a 5.9-liter Cummins diesel. Its reputation rests on a memorable rounded redesign, a durable-feeling inline-six layout and, especially in 12-valve form, a mechanically fueled Bosch P7100 injection system that enthusiasts value for its modification potential. But “2nd-gen” covers two different engine systems—and neither the name nor the reputation guarantees that an individual truck is reliable.
What years are considered 2nd-gen Cummins?
The term generally refers to 1994–2002 Dodge Ram pickups with the 5.9-liter Cummins. It identifies the truck generation, not one unchanging engine. The 12-valve engine was used through the 1998 model year, and the 24-valve arrived partway through that year, in the transition commonly called 1998.5. As a result, a truck described simply as a “1998” may have either version; confirm its build and engine details rather than relying on the year alone. Why did the generation become legendary?
The appeal is a combination of the truck’s distinctive rounded styling and the Cummins inline-six, rather than one single specification. Cummins says the engine has been an option in RAM pickups since 1989, and its historical milestones note that RAM exceeded 200 horsepower in 1996. That rise in output happened while the second-generation truck design remained in production, giving the generation a recognizable identity across a meaningful range of engine and transmission configurations. For enthusiasts, the 12-valve trucks have a particular draw: their Bosch P7100 fueling is mechanical, and MotorTrend describes the pump as readily modifiable. That trait helps explain the generation’s following among owners interested in tuning. It should not be mistaken for a promise that any modified truck is dependable, or that every second-generation Cummins has the same hardware or condition.

12-valve vs. 24-valve: what changed?

Factory horsepower and torque by year and transmission
Published factory ratings differ by transmission and, for the later 24-valve, by high-output configuration. The figures below are the ratings reported by MotorTrend; they are not a claim about the power of a particular used truck today.

MotorTrend’s ratings table labels the last high-output row “2001–2001,” while its article text says the version was offered for 2001 and 2002. The 2001–2002 range above follows the article text, but the discrepancy means the precise model-year application should be confirmed against documentation for the specific truck. How reliable is a 2nd-gen Cummins?
There is no single reliability verdict that applies to every truck in this age range. MotorTrend calls attention to two risks on some 24-valve trucks, but those reported failure modes do not establish that a specific vehicle has suffered them—or that every truck will. The condition and service history of the individual pickup matter more than the generation label.

Lift pump and VP44 concerns on 24-valve trucks
MotorTrend reports that the electric lift pump on 1998.5–2002 VP44-equipped trucks could provide insufficient fuel volume and contribute to injection-pump failure. When evaluating one, ask for maintenance and repair records and have a qualified technician assess the fuel system. A known history of related repairs is more informative than assuming the pump is either healthy or failed based on the model year alone.
“53” block casting concern
MotorTrend also cautions that some 24-valve engines with a “53” casting on the block can crack and leak coolant. This is a risk associated with some engines, not evidence that every 24-valve block will crack. Have the engine inspected for signs of coolant leakage and ask whether any relevant repair has been documented.

How to evaluate one before buying
- Identify the engine and truck details. Verify whether it is a 12-valve or 24-valve, especially on a 1998 truck, and note the transmission and any high-output claim.
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for documented work on the fuel system and injection pump, particularly on a 1998.5–2002 VP44 truck.
- Inspect the specific vehicle. Have a knowledgeable diesel technician check engine condition and, on a relevant 24-valve truck, the block for the casting-related coolant-leak concern.
- Match reference material to the engine. Cummins’ Manuals and Technical Documents page directs owners to documentation and serial-specific technical information. Cummins QuickServe also provides engine information by serial number.
These checks help frame the decision; they do not replace a vehicle-specific inspection or establish a guaranteed service life.
