CLIP adds electric assistance at the front of a compatible bicycle, but it does not replace the front wheel. It is a removable friction-drive device that presses against the tire, so fit, tire size, route and the advertised range matter before you buy.
What the CLIP conversion kit is—and how it drives the bike
CLIP describes its product as a portable, no-tools propulsion device. Rather than building a motor into a replacement wheel, the removable unit drives the bicycle through friction at the front tire. CLIP lists a 450 W motor and includes a remote, power adapter and operating manual on its product page: CLIP product specifications.
That distinction matters: CLIP is not a conventional front hub-motor wheel. Its removable design is intended to make adding and taking off electric assistance straightforward, but the device’s contact with the tire and its position at the front are different from a motorized replacement wheel.
CLIP Commuter vs. Explorer: specifications and advertised range
CLIP lists two models. The specifications below are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Its official pages present the range differently, so treat the figures as estimates advertised by CLIP rather than distances every rider can expect.

The U.S. prices are the amounts listed on CLIP’s page, which also displays reservation or trial amounts; regional pages show other currencies and amounts. Confirm the live price and terms for your market on the official product page. CLIP also lists speeds up to 24 km/h, charging times of 30 or 60 minutes depending on model, and 12–18% regenerative braking. These are displayed specifications, not independently verified performance results.
Will CLIP fit your bicycle?
CLIP says its intended bikes are city, road and hybrid bicycles with 27–28 inch front tires. The company states: “We made CLIP to be compatible with all city, road and hybrid bikes with a 27” to 28” front tire/tyre and any fork stem thickness.” Its FAQ separately says the device is not compatible with suspension forks, and the product page cautions against cargo bikes. Those qualifications are more useful than the broad claim that it fits almost any bike.

How can I be sure my bike will fit?
- Check the front tire size printed on the tire sidewall; CLIP specifies 27–28 inches.
- Confirm that the bicycle is a city, road or hybrid model and does not have a suspension fork.
- If it is a cargo bike or you are unsure about the fork or front-end clearance, ask CLIP to confirm fit before ordering.
CLIP advertises a 30-day return offer, and one product page lists a 12-month limited warranty. Check the terms that apply in your market before purchase.
What to consider before choosing it
Start with the trip you actually need to make. Compare that distance with CLIP’s model-specific advertised range, leaving room for conditions that may reduce usable distance; the published figures are not a guarantee for a particular route or rider. If your regular journey is longer, includes steep hills or rough pavement, consider whether this design suits your needs. WIRED’s review describes the kit as “an affordable but inconvenient solution” and raises battery range, safety risks and inconvenience as drawbacks on hilly routes and rough pavement. Also consider how a removable front-mounted friction drive fits your routine: how often you want to attach or remove it, whether the tire and fork meet the stated requirements, and whether you are comfortable with a front-end drive device. A local bike shop may be able to assess your bicycle’s compatibility, but confirm whether it can evaluate this particular device.

A conventional front-wheel kit replaces the bicycle’s front wheel with a motorized wheel system; CLIP attaches as a removable friction drive and leaves the wheel in place. The two are different approaches, not interchangeable descriptions of the same product.

For a conventional front-wheel system, an example of the category is the E-BikeKit front-wheel conversion system. Its listing establishes a different product category, not compatibility with CLIP or inclusion as a CLIP accessory.
