For a 2025 value shortlist, the 1965 Buick Skylark Gran Sport, less expensive Chevrolet Chevelle generations, and 1970 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 stand out as candidates to investigate—not proven winners. Hagerty’s dated estimates put specified examples below the prices shown for rare, top-spec muscle cars, but condition and configuration can change the numbers dramatically. These are guide values, not guaranteed sale prices or predictions.
What “bang for your buck” means here
Value is period character and performance relative to the purchase price, weighed against condition, originality, documentation, and the work needed to make a car usable. It is not simply the lowest figure in a valuation guide. The estimates below are U.S. dollars from Hagerty valuation material and are tied to particular models, configurations, condition tiers, and dates.
Hagerty says its 2025 Bull Market selection considered public and private sales, historical trends, and insurance valuations; it was not a list of these American muscle-car candidates. Its broader point, as Hagerty Senior Vice President of Media and Editorial Larry Webster put it, was: “It’s a common misconception that fun cars have to be expensive.” Hagerty’s 2025 Bull Market announcement does not identify a best-value muscle car.
2025 value candidates and their estimates
| Candidate | Hagerty estimate or comparison | What the figure tells you |
| 1965 Buick Skylark Gran Sport, 401-cid/325-hp coupe | $18,200 in #3 Good condition; $10,300 in #4 Fair; $44,200 in #1 Concours. Hagerty report published July 17, 2025. | The spread by condition is substantial. The Gran Sport was based on the Skylark and used the Wildcat’s 401-cid V-8. |
| 1964–67 Chevrolet Chevelle | $24,900 average #3 value; up 16% over five years. Hagerty trend page, January 2025. | A broad generation-level reference, not a price for every engine or trim. |
| 1973–77 Chevrolet Chevelle | $18,200 average #3 value; up 42% over five years. Hagerty trend page, January 2025. | The lower estimate does not make it equivalent to an earlier or higher-performance Chevelle. |
| 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6 | $98,000 in #3 condition; up 10% over five years. Hagerty trend page, January 2025. | A rare, high-spec comparison that shows why “Chevelle” alone is not a meaningful price category. |
| 1970 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400, 400-cid/335-hp hardtop | $26,300 in #3 Good; $13,600 in #4 Fair; $49,900 in #2 Excellent. A four-speed manual carries a reported +20% adjustment. Hagerty report published November 6, 2025. | Compare the Formula 400 with another Formula 400, not with a Trans Am; Hagerty treats those as distinct valuation categories. |

How to compare the cars fairly
Match the exact car, not just the nameplate
Before comparing figures, align year, body style, engine, transmission, trim, and condition. A base Chevelle, a 1970 SS 454 LS6, a Formula 400, and a Trans Am are not interchangeable comparisons. Hagerty’s report for a 1966 Chevelle SS 396, for example, applies a +15% adjustment for a four-speed manual. Its condition guidance describes #3 Good cars as running and driving well though they may have incorrect parts; #4 Fair cars can be daily drivers with visible flaws. See Hagerty’s 1966 Chevelle SS 396 report.
Inspect condition and verify originality
A low guide estimate may correspond to visible flaws, incorrect parts, or work a buyer will need to address. Check body integrity and mechanical condition, and compare the car with its documentation and claimed specification. The wide valuation range for the Skylark Gran Sport illustrates why a badge by itself cannot establish a car’s value.

Include usability and ownership needs
A driver and a show-quality restoration meet different goals. The cited estimates do not include future maintenance, repairs, restoration, or the buyer’s cost of finding qualified inspection and parts support; those need to be assessed for the specific car. The available figures also do not establish comparable total ownership costs across these models.
Other names to investigate—with a date caveat
1968 AMC AMX
Hagerty’s dynamic 1960s American valuation category displayed $35,500 for a 1968 AMX in #3 Good condition and a +2% movement. The page is not a dated 2025 snapshot, so this should not be treated as a 2025 estimate or direct comparison with the dated figures above. Hagerty’s 1960s American valuation category.

1968–70 Dodge Charger
Hagerty Agent Resources reported an average #3 value of $89,439 for 1968–70 Chargers in 2025, up 21% since 2020. That is useful context for why an iconic model may be less accessible as a value buy. A separate January 2026 figure—$49,424 average #3 for all Chargers, up 26% since 2020—covers a different scope and date, so it is not a 2025 comparison for the 1968–70 cars. What the estimates can—and cannot—tell a buyer
- They can provide a dated guide: use the estimate as a reference for the specified configuration and condition tier.
- They cannot guarantee a transaction price: an individual car’s equipment, originality, condition, and documentation matter.
- They are not insurance coverage amounts or investment forecasts: a valuation estimate does not establish what a policy will insure or what a car will be worth later.
- They do not prove one objective winner: the evidence here does not compare availability, repair costs, or total ownership costs on a like-for-like basis.
Hagerty’s condition descriptions for the 1966 Chevelle SS 396 are a useful reminder that even cars within the same model can occupy different valuation tiers; the exact car and its condition should anchor any price comparison.

- Retro Packaging
- Full Colour Decals
How to use this shortlist when shopping
- Identify the exact year, body, engine, transmission, and trim of the car you are considering.
- Find a valuation reference for that configuration and compare the same condition tier and date where possible.
- Inspect the actual car, verify its claimed specification and documentation, and account for the repairs or restoration it needs.
- Set your own ownership budget and intended use before deciding whether the purchase price represents value for you.
On the dated 2025 evidence, the Skylark Gran Sport and Formula 400 are specific candidates with condition-tier figures, while the Chevelle comparisons show how much generation and specification matter. The numbers narrow the search; they do not replace an inspection or establish the best car for every buyer.
