The City also said fauna monitoring was underway. Neither source provides evidence that the signs have reduced vehicle collisions.
What the Wanneroo wildlife sign initiative includes
PerthNow reported on 16 December 2025 that councillors unanimously approved an initiative led by Councillor Jacqueline Huntley to place around 250 temporary wildlife-warning signs on local roads. The article named Wanneroo Road, Marmion Avenue, Neaves Road, Flynn Drive, Wattle Avenue, Breakwater Drive, Townsend Road, Hawkins Road, Ocean Reef Road and Elliot Road. Its description of the route count is inconsistent, so the named roads are the clearest account of the proposed locations. PerthNow’s report gives the original proposal.
The City’s update of 17 September 2026 says seasonal wildlife caution signs were then being installed and fauna monitoring was underway to understand wildlife activity and support conservation. It does not state the final sign count, total cost or completion date. The City’s seasonal update describes that later implementation context.
Why the City proposed signs
PerthNow attributed the rationale to City administration, which said diminishing habitat, particularly amid urban development, was displacing fauna onto roads. The administration also described wildlife on roads as a danger to motorists and a cause of trauma, injury or death to animals. These are the administration’s stated concerns as quoted in the report, not independently verified measurements of local collision rates.

The report said the council sought a discussion paper on reducing wildlife trauma and a “co-ordinated and compassionate framework” for cooperation among State, local and community stakeholders. It anticipated a further report before the end of June; the sources cited here do not establish whether that report was published.
What is known about the cost and schedule
PerthNow reported an expected cost of about $12,000. Its article body gave an end-of-December schedule, while an image caption said end of January, so the timing was conflicting even in the original report. The City’s September 2026 update confirms installation was underway but does not confirm that earlier estimate or schedule.

Do the signs reduce wildlife collisions?
The available City update says fauna monitoring was being conducted, but it gives no before-and-after collision figures and no finding on whether the signs are effective. The sources therefore establish an initiative and installation activity, not a measured reduction in crashes or animal injuries. Drivers should treat the signs as a caution to slow down and watch for animals, rather than proof that a road is free of risk.

Turtles crossing in spring
The City says southwestern snake-necked turtles may cross roads during spring nesting migrations. It advises motorists to take care near wetlands, especially in rain, and to slow down and stay alert around bushland and wetland areas. If encountering a turtle, keep at least 15 metres away; do not feed or handle it.
