What the BYD Shark 6 security test showed
ABC Four Corners reported on September 21, 2026 that automotive cybersecurity researcher Dan Hreszczuk, co-founder of Canberra-based Fortify Labs, demonstrated control of selected functions on a BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute. The broadcast described locking doors, playing audio and displaying images through the infotainment system, tracking location, accessing cabin audio, and operating the wipers, washers and headlights. The details of how those functions were reached matter. Fortify Labs’ September 28 account identifies the test vehicle as the firm’s own 2025 BYD Shark 6 Premium, with head-unit software version 56.1.2.2507080.1. The firm said the vehicle was fully patched as of July 16, 2026, and research began the next day. It used a publicly known technique for unprivileged access to the head unit, then installed software. Physical installation, remote use and the CAN-bus demonstration are different paths
The phrase “remote hack” can blur distinct stages in this test. The initial access and software installation were physical, according to Fortify Labs. Some later control of the installed software was remote, but the firm says it removed the vehicle’s telematics SIM and used its own cellular hotspot for connectivity. It did not use the BYD-provisioned SIM or BYD internet service, and says the truck was isolated from BYD’s back-end infrastructure. The headlights and wipers demonstration followed a separate route. Fortify Labs says it tapped into the CAN bus in-line and used a Raspberry Pi to simulate a compromised electronic control unit sending CAN messages. That is a physical wiring intervention, not evidence of remotely entering the vehicle network over the internet. The firm also says it did not modify firmware or attempt local privilege escalation. BYD’s response, as reported by CarsGuide on September 23, said the footage did not conclusively demonstrate a remote attack vulnerability without first gaining physical access. Fortify Labs’ later account clarifies that physical access was indeed needed for software installation, while some use of that software came afterward over the researcher’s own connectivity. Those descriptions address different stages rather than proving an internet-based attack on a production vehicle. CarsGuide

What BYD says the software flaw does
BYD Australia and New Zealand said technical teams in Australia and China investigated two routes: the infotainment system’s Android Debug Bridge (ADB) and physical access to the CAN bus. BYD says ADB is disabled in production vehicles, but its engineers reproduced a software defect that could enable it and permit installation of an untrusted third-party app. AutoTalk Australia
BYD also said that access to location and microphone functions required someone to approve a permission prompt manually on the infotainment screen. That qualification is important: the test’s reported capability does not mean those permissions were granted silently or that BYD itself collected the location or cabin audio. AutoTalk Australia

OTA fix status: planned, not confirmed as delivered
BYD says it has completed root-cause work on the ADB defect and plans to remove the pathway through a future over-the-air update once validation is complete. The company said owners would not need to visit a dealer, and it was checking whether other models sold in Australia required the same update. The available reports describe the update as forthcoming; they do not confirm delivery by October 4, 2026. What the CAN-bus finding does—and does not—mean
BYD says operating the headlights and wipers required direct physical intervention to tap the CAN-bus wiring. It says an external device attempting to access the network without cutting into wiring would need to use the OBD diagnostic interface, which has device authentication and physical isolation. BYD also said it had launched a separate risk assessment of additional safeguards for CAN messages, including authenticity, integrity and freshness checks. Limits of the findings
This was a controlled case study of one vehicle, not an audit of the Shark 6 fleet, every BYD model or the broader car market. The available reporting provides no figure for how many vehicles are affected, so a fleet-wide prevalence cannot be inferred. Fortify Labs
Fortify Labs says protections on the head unit—including SELinux policies and separation achieved through a QNX hypervisor—prevented access to sensitive components such as cameras. That helps explain the limits encountered in this test, but does not prove every vehicle system is secure. The firm says it chose not to publish its initial access method because it considered the technique easy to replicate and disclosure could put people facing stalking or technology-facilitated abuse at risk. Capability is not evidence of intent
The broadcast situated the demonstration in a wider debate about connected-vehicle data, surveillance and government policy. The technical test showed what software installed under those conditions could access; it did not establish that the manufacturer or a government accessed the data, or that BYD’s systems were breached. As Australia’s former national cyber security adviser Alastair MacGibbon put it in the ABC report: “The real question would come down [to]: Could they cause harm with these vehicles? The capability is definitely there. Is the intent? I don’t know.” ABC News / Four Corners
What owners can do
- Check BYD’s official channels for confirmation that the relevant update is available for your vehicle.
- Keep vehicle and connected-app software updated, and ask a mechanic to check for updates during routine service. Fortify Labs offers this as general cyber hygiene, not as a workaround for the reported defect or a substitute for BYD’s update. Fortify Labs’ owner guidance
