Its standout is a Heuer Audi Sport Ref. 510.533, a UK-market watch that a 2021 Fratello profile described as exceptionally scarce—but whose reported rarity is not an official production count.
How Chris Culver started collecting Audi watches
Culver, a US-based architect, said his watch collecting began after he modified his Audi S4 and felt he had little left to add to the car. He bought his first Audi watch in 2016. By the time of Tomas Rosputinsky’s September 2, 2021 profile, Culver had once reached around 150 watches and later slowed his collecting. The headline described the collection as almost 200, so these figures mark different points in its growth, not a single exact count. Fratello’s 2021 profile

The collection was not limited to watches made by one manufacturer. Its appeal lay in the many ways Audi’s name, cars and motorsport identity appeared on watches: from straightforward date displays to unusual designs and the Heuer chronograph.
The Heuer Audi Sport Ref. 510.533
Rosputinsky identified the Heuer Audi Sport Ref. 510.533 as a centerpiece of Culver’s collection. The feature describes two dial versions; Culver’s example lacked half-hour increments on the 12-hour counter. It says Audi Sport U.K. and David Sutton Motorsport Ltd. commissioned the watches, which were available only in the UK and sold for about two months in the 1980s. Those historical details are the feature’s account, rather than independently established production records.

The watch uses a modified Lemania Cal. 5100, according to the profile. The 24-hour register and day window were removed to make room for Audi Sport branding. That combination of a motorsport chronograph and an altered movement layout helps explain why this model stands apart from the more conventional Audi-branded watches in Culver’s collection.
Rosputinsky reported that fewer than 100 Heuer Audi Sport watches were known to exist when he wrote in 2021. This was an estimate of known examples at that time—not a confirmed production total or a current census. Audi’s official catalogue confirms that the broader category of Audi-branded watches includes chronographs and Audi Sport models, but it does not establish the provenance, production quantity or availability of this vintage Heuer. More than motorsport chronographs
The other watches in Culver’s collection show how varied Audi-themed designs can be. Rosputinsky’s feature highlights examples including:
- Audi red-dot date watch: A practical date display with a distinctive red detail.
- PanoGraph-inspired design: A watch whose layout recalls Glashütte Original’s PanoGraph style.
- “Ghost” dial and police-themed watch: Two visually distinctive pieces among the collection’s less conventional designs.
- Audi radiator watch: A design that draws on a recognizable part of the car.
- “Old England” steering-wheel watch: A watch built around a steering-wheel motif. The profile cautions that fakes may omit “Old England” at the bottom of the dial; that clue alone is not a complete authentication test.
- Audi automatic day/date: A mechanical model with an unusual power-reserve display.
The feature also recounts Culver’s repair of a mechanical GWC watch. He said a tiny spring had come loose and that, after he tracked down the company that had bought the original GWC, it supplied a spare part: “When I bought this watch, it was not working due to a tiny spring that came loose. I hunted down the company that bought the original GWC and sent the watch off to them. They had a spare part and it now works great.” This is Culver’s account as quoted by Rosputinsky.
Automatic, manual-wound and quartz movements
The collection spans all three movement types. Rosputinsky estimated that it contained around 30 automatic watches and 10 manual-wound watches, with the remainder quartz. He also noted that Culver had not yet properly catalogued the collection, so these are approximate figures rather than a verified inventory.
That mix reflects the collection’s range: Audi branding is the common thread, not one movement technology or watchmaking style. A quartz date watch, a manual-wound piece and an automatic chronograph can all belong to the same enthusiast collection while offering very different ownership and service needs.
What to consider when looking for an Audi watch
The 2021 profile is a collector feature, not a buying guide, and it does not provide standardized authentication steps or current prices. If you are comparing an Audi watch, treat the details below as useful questions rather than proof that a listing is genuine:
- Design and complication: Decide whether you are drawn to a chronograph, date or day/date display, or a car-inspired design such as the radiator or steering-wheel watch.
- Movement and condition: Establish whether the watch is automatic, manual-wound or quartz, and ask whether it is running and has service documentation. A mechanically interesting watch may require repair or parts.
- Provenance and authenticity: Request clear photographs and supporting history. For the steering-wheel design, the feature notes that some fakes may lack “Old England” at the dial’s bottom; that observation is only one clue and does not authenticate a watch.
- Scarcity claims: Treat the “fewer than 100 known” statement about the Heuer Audi Sport as a 2021 reported estimate, not a guaranteed count or an indication that a particular listing is genuine.
Audi’s catalogue shows that branded watches exist across several styles, but it does not verify any particular vintage example. Exact vintage models, condition and availability vary, and the 2021 feature does not establish present-day prices or active stock. Browse Audi Collection watch results
Which Audi watch would you choose?
The Heuer Audi Sport is the obvious choice for a collector drawn to motorsport history and a distinctive chronograph layout. The radiator and steering-wheel watches make the car connection more literal, while the automatic day/date model and the GWC repair story show the collection’s mechanical side. Culver was also still looking for a fairly priced Audi Mühle or Audi Sinn when the profile was published in 2021; that reflects his search at the time, not a claim about current availability.
