Use the fuel specified in the owner’s manual or on the motorcycle’s fuel label for its exact model year and market. Check two things separately: the minimum octane rating and the maximum permitted ethanol content. A higher octane grade is not automatically better, and an E10 or E15 label alone does not establish that a particular bike can use it.
How to choose fuel at the pump
- Identify your motorcycle precisely. Note its make, model, model year and market version. Fuel requirements can vary among models and markets.
- Check the manual or fuel label. Find the required minimum octane and maximum ethanol proportion. KTM says its recommended fuel and relevant standards are specified in the owner’s manual: KTM India service FAQ.
- Match the octane rating system. A manual may use AKI, RON or ROZ; pump labels vary by country. Use the rating system stated in your manual and its local equivalent rather than treating the numbers as interchangeable.
- Read the pump’s ethanol information. Choose a blend whose ethanol content does not exceed the limit for your motorcycle. Octane and ethanol are different specifications.
- Use an alternative only if the manufacturer lists it. If the specified fuel is unavailable and the manual gives no approved alternative, contact an authorized dealer or service representative instead of guessing.
What octane rating does your motorcycle need?
Octane measures a fuel’s resistance to engine knock. The manufacturer sets the rating the engine requires; buying a higher grade than specified is not automatically beneficial. Do not choose premium solely because it has a higher number or costs more.
The 2013 owner’s manual for the BMW R 1200 GS gives a model-specific example: it lists 89 AKI (95 RON) as recommended fuel and 87 AKI (91 RON) as an alternative, with restrictions concerning power and fuel consumption. Those figures and trade-offs apply to that manual’s motorcycle, not to BMW motorcycles generally or to other model years. See the BMW R 1200 GS owner’s manual.
Can you use E10 or E15 in a motorcycle?
Only if the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact motorcycle permit that blend. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines E10 as 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline, and E15 as 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline; the label describes the blend, not whether your bike is approved to use it. Check the manual’s ethanol limit before filling up. See the EPA gasoline-ethanol blends FAQ.

- Durable construction; hard-plastic storage case with hose and gauge included
Manufacturer guidance illustrates why a universal answer is unsafe. KTM India says not to use methanol fuel or fuel containing more than 10% ethanol. Harley-Davidson guidance allows up to 10% ethanol for the motorcycles covered by that guidance and notes that some motorcycles in particular countries are calibrated for higher concentrations. Verify applicability against your own manual and market version: KTM India service FAQ and Harley-Davidson fuel recommendations.
Suzuki’s guidance says ethanol blends should not fall below the gasoline octane recommendation, reinforcing that both requirements matter: Suzuki Intruder 150 owner’s manual.

- SPILL-PROOF WIDE MOUTH DESIGN: This e85 ethanol tester features an wide opening that eliminates messy spills when pouring gasoline/water, and no funnel required. The leak-resistant construction keeps hands clean while collecting fuel samples, making this ethanol tester for gasoline ideal for garage and field use.
- 3-STEP ACCURACY IN 5 MINS: Get laboratory-grade precision through this e85 fuel octane tester: First: fill to blue water line. Next: add gas to red fuel line. And then shake and wait 5 minutes. The e85 fuel test bottle clearer ethanol percentage readings than standard test kits.
- PROFESSIONAL-GRADE DURABILITY: This octane tester for gasoline constructed with chemical-resistant HDPE material that withstands 200+ test cycles. Heat-defying walls prevent warping in extreme temps, while the scratch-proof screen-printed markings stay legible through heavy use.
- SMART DUAL MEASUREMENT SYSTEM: The e85 octane tester color-coded fill lines (blue for water/red for gas) align with 5% increment scales on both front/back sides. The ultra-clear e85 fuel test bottle body allows 360° visual verification, ensuring precise E85 compatibility checks for any engine type.
- PORTABLE AND LIGHTWEIGHT: Measuring 5.9 inches with a 1-ounce featherweight profile, this e85 tester kit delivers professional-grade ethanol testing anywhere. Obtain precise readings within 5 minutes to verify fuel ethanol levels, safeguarding your engine's peak performance through optimal fuel quality control.
What if the pump offers 95 or 98?
For a motorcycle in a market where those numbers are pump octane labels, use the value that meets the minimum in the manual’s applicable rating system. Do not assume that 98 is necessary—or that 95 is adequate—without checking the manual. Some manuals state RON or ROZ, while U.S. pumps commonly use AKI; compare like with like or consult the manufacturer’s conversion guidance.
What fuels should you avoid?
Do not use a fuel the manual specifically excludes. The exclusions are model-dependent: the cited Harley-Davidson guidance warns against methanol and racing fuel, while the 2013 BMW R 1200 GS manual warns against E85 and flex fuel. These are examples, not a complete list for every motorcycle. Harley-Davidson also warns that unapproved additives may damage components; an additive or octane booster is not a substitute for fuel that meets the manufacturer’s specification.

U.S. pump note: E10 and E15 from a shared hose
The EPA describes a co-dispensing situation in which residual E15 in a shared hose can affect the first fuel dispensed as E10. It says some stations use a four-gallon minimum approach to address this. In the same FAQ, the EPA reported about 200 U.S. stations with pumps that co-dispensed E10 and E15, fewer than 30 of which had chosen the four-gallon minimum approach, against a contextual estimate of more than 120,000 U.S. gas stations. These are figures reported in the FAQ, which refers to inquiries beginning in 2016; they are not a current station census.
The EPA FAQ states, “We are not aware of a single gasoline station in the US that doesn’t offer either E0 or E10.” That is the agency’s statement in the cited FAQ, not a real-time inventory of stations. Check the pump labels and your manual before fueling.
