PerthNow reported that Qingwei Li was sentenced in Western Australia’s District Court to two years in jail, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to four dangerous-driving counts stemming from a 2016 crash near Wilbinga. The report also said he was fined $7,000 and disqualified from holding a driver’s licence for two years.
What happened on Indian Ocean Drive
In a report published on 2 August 2016, PerthNow journalist Kate Campbell said Li, then 35, was holidaying in Western Australia with three other Chinese nationals, including his wife. On 6 February 2016, he was driving a rental vehicle on Indian Ocean Drive in Wilbinga, north of Perth.
According to the report, Li overtook several cars, approached a blind right-hand bend on the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming Jeep station sedan driven by Simon Treloar. These details are from PerthNow’s account; the underlying court judgment was not located.
Injuries reported after the collision
PerthNow reported that Treloar suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to Royal Perth Hospital. He spent a week in a coma and sustained a fractured pelvis, a shattered right femur and ankle, a crushed right foot, broken ribs, lung and kidney complications, and a smashed-in nose. The article said he had undergone six operations and might still lose his right foot.

The same report said a woman travelling in Li’s vehicle also suffered life-threatening injuries, while Li’s wife and a third passenger were injured. Li was injured too and spent a few months in a wheelchair, according to the article.

PerthNow quoted Judge Simon Stone telling Li: “If you come here to drive, you should know our rules.” The article said Stone viewed Li’s dangerous actions as the result of inexperience rather than deliberate disregard for Western Australian traffic laws, while making clear that unfamiliarity explained the incident but was no excuse.

The report also described an emotional exchange after sentencing: Li embraced Treloar in tears, shook his hand and apologised. It said Treloar told Li and his family, “it’s finished.”
