Yes, China is requiring safer mechanical access for vehicle doors—but the rule is not limited to EVs, and it is more precise than a blanket ban on every flush-looking handle. Mandatory national standard GB 48001—2026 requires mechanical door releases inside and outside, plus enough exterior space to operate a handle by hand. It takes effect January 1, 2027, with all produced models expected to comply by January 1, 2029.
Is China banning hidden EV door handles?
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has issued Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles (GB 48001—2026), a mandatory national standard that sets operational safety requirements for vehicle door handles. MIIT describes it as a vehicle standard, not an EV-only rule. The core requirement is that doors remain mechanically operable from both outside and inside, including when electrical power is unavailable. MIIT’s February 10, 2026 explainer describes the standard and its requirements.
“Ban on hidden handles” is useful shorthand, but the measure is not simply a rule that every handle must visibly protrude at all times. It requires a mechanical exterior opening method and physical space for a person’s hand to operate it. The available explanation does not establish that every flush-looking design is prohibited regardless of how it works.
What does GB 48001—2026 require?
MIIT says each vehicle door must have an exterior handle that can be mechanically opened and an interior mechanical handle. For exterior operation, the handle must reserve hand-operation space of at least 60 × 25 × 20 millimeters. That makes the rule about practical access—not just whether a handle appears on the bodywork.

- Design question: assess whether opening depends on electrical power, whether the interior release is findable and usable, and whether a rescuer can reach and operate the exterior handle.
MIIT’s explainer summarizes the standard but is not the full legal text. It does not provide enough detail to determine how every individual handle design will be assessed in implementation.
When does China’s hidden door handle ban start?
The standard takes effect January 1, 2027. MIIT says it begins applying to new vehicles on that date and that all produced models should meet its requirements by January 1, 2029. CnEVPost reports that already-approved models and models scheduled for launch may complete design changes by January 2029, making the later date a transition point rather than a requirement to retrofit every existing vehicle. Which cars are affected?
The rule is a vehicle door-handle standard, not a measure limited to battery-electric cars. Its requirements concern the way doors open, so the EV framing in many headlines should not be read as limiting the standard to EVs. The transition schedule distinguishes new vehicles from the broader expectation that all produced models comply by January 1, 2029; it does not say that every vehicle already on the road must be modified.
The scale of the design issue is notable in China: MIIT says about 60% of the top 100 new-energy vehicle models by sales in April 2025 had hidden door handles. That statistic applies to those 100 models in that one month, not to all vehicles in China or EVs worldwide.

What happens if an electric door handle loses power?
MIIT’s stated safety concern is that a serious collision can damage wiring or cut power, leaving electrically dependent handles unable to open. That can hinder occupants trying to escape and responders trying to reach them. Its explainer also cites a hidden handle that was difficult to open after freezing in snow. These are the ministry’s examples and rationale, not a quantified finding that every hidden handle will fail.
CnEVPost reported that bystanders could not open the doors while trying to rescue people after a Xiaomi SU7 crash in Chengdu. That is relevant context, but the report does not establish that a particular handle design alone caused the outcome or that the incident was the sole reason for the standard.

Could the rule affect car designs outside China?
China’s requirement is an enacted national standard for the market it governs; the cited sources do not establish an equivalent rule in other jurisdictions. The Associated Press reported Omdia analyst Chris Liu’s assessment that China was the first major automotive market to explicitly ban electrical pop-out and press-to-release hidden handles, and that other regions might take interest. That is Liu’s analysis, not a formal legal conclusion or confirmation that another market has adopted the same requirement.
