Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn 2022, researchers from Southwest Jiaotong University tested a modified car that levitated 35 millimeters above a specially equipped highway lane in Jiangsu, China. The demonstration used magnets on the car and a conductor rail in the road; it was a prototype test, not a production car that can hover over ordinary roads.
How did the car hover over the road?
The university-developed vehicle was a modified conventional car fitted with a permanent-magnet array. A purpose-prepared good-conductor rail installed in the road enabled the car to levitate. The system therefore depended on dedicated roadway infrastructure; it was not a demonstration of a car floating above a standard highway. Xinhua’s report, published September 11, 2022, describes the setup.
What happened in the Jiangsu highway test?
Xinhua reported that the levitating car weighed 2.8 tonnes and floated 35 millimeters above the road during the test. The demonstration took place on a 7.9-kilometer highway section in Jiangsu, eastern China.
Eight cars took part in the broader test group, including five new-energy vehicles. That count covered the maglev demonstration and other vehicles; it does not mean all eight cars levitated. Xinhua reported a maximum speed approaching 230 kilometers per hour for the test. This is a reported test maximum, not a commercial operating speed for a maglev car.

What was the test meant to establish?
The stated purpose of the highway tests was to study road design and safety measures for high-speed driving. The report establishes that a university-developed prototype levitated over a specially prepared section of road; it does not establish that the vehicle entered service or is available to consumers.

Professor Deng Zigang’s potential energy-use and driving-range benefits were presented as expectations, not measured results. The report does not provide a comparative trial demonstrating improved efficiency, range, tire wear, or safety for this car.
How does this relate to other maglev research?
A separate 2022 peer-reviewed study examined the dynamic performance of a medium- and low-speed maglev vehicle–bridge system at the Shanghai Lingang test base. It used 25-meter concrete and steel simply supported bridges and reported vertical first-order bridge natural frequencies of 7.32 and 7.72 hertz, along with measured vehicle–bridge response indicators. That work offers context on maglev engineering, but it is not a study of the Jiangsu highway car. The study appeared in the Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering in 2022.
