China is requiring mechanically operable interior and exterior door handles under mandatory standard GB 48001—2026, Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles. It takes effect for new vehicle models on January 1, 2027, with a transition for already approved models through January 1, 2029. The rule targets access that depends on electricity or is difficult to locate and operate—not necessarily every handle that moves or operates electrically.
What China’s standard requires
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) says each vehicle door must have an interior and exterior handle that can be opened mechanically. Exterior handles must also leave space for a person to operate them by hand. The ministry’s explainer gives minimum exterior hand-operation dimensions of 60 × 25 × 20 millimeters and describes a mechanical emergency unlocking device. MIIT’s February 10, 2026 explainer summarizes the standard, GB 48001—2026.
The practical distinction is between a handle’s appearance or normal operation and whether a usable mechanical release remains available. A handle may have electrical operation as an additional feature; Reuters reported that a mechanical release is mandatory while electrical operation remains optional. Fully hidden electronic pop-out or press-to-release designs may therefore be incompatible if they lack the required mechanical access and usable operating space. The rule should not be read as a blanket ban on every handle that retracts or uses electricity. Reuters reporting republished by Investing.com describes the mechanical-release requirement.
When the requirements apply

MIIT says the transition allows time for manufacturers’ technical changes, investment, and product changeovers. Associated Press and Reuters also describe the January 1, 2029 deadline as applying to previously approved models. The dates concern China’s standard and its implementation there; they do not establish a compliance deadline in other markets. AP’s February 3, 2026 report summarizes the rule and transition.

Why regulators focused on mechanical access
MIIT’s stated safety concern is that a severe crash can cut power or damage wiring, leaving electrically dependent handles unusable. Occupants could then have trouble getting out, while people outside could be delayed in opening the door to help. The ministry also describes handles freezing in snowy conditions. These are the hazards behind the rule; the cited material does not establish a failure rate for hidden-handle vehicles as a whole.
MIIT reported that about 60% of the 100 best-selling new-energy vehicle models in China in April 2025 had hidden door handles. That is the ministry’s figure for that particular model cohort, not an independently validated estimate of the share of all vehicles on the road. The ministry explainer does not identify the underlying dataset or its original publisher.

What the rule does—and does not—say about specific cars
The standard sets design requirements; the sources cited here do not provide model-by-model compliance findings or comparative tests. To assess a particular vehicle, the relevant questions are whether occupants and rescuers can locate its handles, whether mechanical releases work without vehicle power, whether exterior operation has the specified space, and whether access remains usable under the failure conditions addressed by the standard. A vehicle’s use of a powered or retractable handle alone is not enough to establish whether it complies.
Separately, AP reported on August 21, 2026, that Tesla and Chinese automakers were recalling more than 4 million vehicles over safety concerns, mostly related to door handles, citing Chinese authorities. AP put Tesla’s recall at about 2.98 million vehicles and also mentioned recalls involving Xiaomi and Leapmotor. Those figures and the broader total are tied to AP’s report on that date; they do not mean every recalled vehicle had the same defect or received the same remedy. For a vehicle owner, recall status and the remedy for a specific model should be checked through the relevant manufacturer or Chinese regulator. A generic escape tool or aftermarket handle is not evidence that a vehicle meets the standard, and should not be treated as a substitute for a manufacturer’s recall remedy. The exact provisions are in the published GB 48001—2026 text; MIIT’s explainer is a summary rather than the full standard.
