China is promoting methanol-fueled cars as a regionally targeted alternative to conventional gasoline vehicles, not as a nationwide replacement. The strategy pairs specially designed combustion vehicles with local methanol production, distribution and refueling; Geely is the clearest automaker example in the available reporting. The policy direction is clear, but current private-market availability, broad refueling access and methanol’s comparative climate impact are not established by the evidence cited here.
What are methanol cars?
Methanol cars are internal-combustion vehicles designed or adapted to run on methanol. They are not battery-electric cars, although a plug-in hybrid can combine a methanol-capable engine with electric drive. Methanol operation requires more than pouring a different fuel into an ordinary gasoline car: China’s 2019 guidance identifies specialized fuel-supply and electronic-injection systems, emissions after-treatment, filters and lubricants, and alcohol-resistant materials.
Some vehicle designs may be capable of using more than one fuel, but that is not a universal feature. Geely has described a planned fifth-generation plug-in hybrid that can use methanol and gasoline mixed in one tank, alongside electricity. That is a manufacturer description of a particular planned system, not a specification that applies to every methanol vehicle.
Why is China promoting methanol cars?
The policy case is based on matching vehicle deployment to local conditions and resources. An eight-ministry guidance document issued in 2019 calls on local governments to make implementation plans suited to their circumstances and to coordinate vehicle manufacturing with methanol production, transport and refueling. In other words, the policy treats cars and fuel infrastructure as a linked system: a vehicle is of little practical use where drivers cannot reliably obtain its fuel.

The guidance also calls for research, standards and service-system development. It presents methanol as an option for places where local conditions support it, not as a single national answer for every driver or region.
What rules and standards apply?
Vehicle requirements in the 2019 guidance
For new light-duty methanol cars, the guidance specifies China VI type testing and interim limits for methanol and formaldehyde emissions. It also calls for environmental information disclosure and publication of repair information. It says qualifying vehicles listed in the national road-vehicle product announcement and meeting vehicle-safety and certification requirements may be registered with methanol recorded as the fuel type. These are provisions described in the 2019 document; they should not be read as a complete statement of current law or a substitute for checking later amendments.

Fuel application and operational safety standards
China’s official standards listings show recommended national standard GB/T 47585-2026, “Specification on the application of methanol fuel for vehicles,” published May 25, 2026 and effective September 1, 2026. GB/T 41884-2022, “Safety specification for operation of methanol fuel for vehicles,” was published and implemented October 12, 2022. These standards formalize fuel application and operational safety; their existence does not by itself establish that refueling is available everywhere.
How far has methanol-car deployment gone?
Geely Automobile Holdings Limited’s 2024 ESG report says nearly 40,000 methanol-operated vehicles had been sold by the end of its reporting period, cumulative distance exceeded 20 billion kilometres, and the vehicles were promoted in 16 provinces and 50 cities during 2024. Geely also reported 130% year-on-year sales growth. These are company-reported figures; the report as summarized here does not define every counting method, and the figures have not been independently validated in the sources cited for this article.

A separate Geely Auto International Corporation article describes a concentrated fleet example: as of May 2023, the company said more than 90% of Guiyang’s city fleet was using methanol taxis, which it reported had travelled over 10 billion kilometres in 15 years. This is a company account of one city’s fleet, not a national fleet estimate.
Can methanol cars run on gasoline too?
Some can, according to Geely’s description of its fifth-generation “super methanol” plug-in hybrid; the company said methanol and gasoline could be flexibly mixed in one tank, with electricity also available as part of the hybrid system. That capability is specific to the design Geely described. The available material does not show that all methanol cars are dual-fuel vehicles, nor does it establish how the system performs in independent testing.

Are methanol cars available for individual buyers?
Geely’s 2024 ESG report said it planned to offer two fifth-generation methanol plug-in hybrids to individual customers in 2025: a sedan and an SUV. The announcement does not establish that either model subsequently reached retail sale. Current prices, specifications, sales markets and availability therefore cannot be confirmed from the cited material.
The same report discusses fourth-generation Emgrand methanol-hydrogen plug-in hybrids delivered for the 2025 Asian Winter Games. Geely reported alcohol consumption as low as 9.2 L/100 km and a 42% reduction in carbon emissions versus comparable gasoline vehicles. Those are company claims about that vehicle program; the report details cited here do not specify a lifecycle boundary for the emissions comparison, so the figures should not be generalized to other methanol cars or interpreted as a full fuel-lifecycle result.

Where can drivers refuel a methanol car?
The policy’s emphasis on coordinating fuel production, transport and refueling points to a place-dependent answer: drivers need access to a methanol-compatible supply network, and national coverage cannot be assumed. The available sources do not establish current nationwide station coverage or practical access outside established fleet locations. A prospective buyer would need to confirm local availability and the vehicle’s compatible refueling arrangements before relying on one for daily use.
Are methanol cars cleaner than gasoline cars or EVs?
The cited material does not provide an independent, apples-to-apples lifecycle comparison of methanol cars, gasoline vehicles and battery EVs. Geely has made environmental claims about its vehicles and described work converting CO2 into methanol, but company statements alone do not settle the comparison.
A fair assessment would need to distinguish tailpipe emissions from the emissions associated with producing and delivering the fuel. Methanol’s climate impact depends in part on how it is made; a vehicle’s reported exhaust or operating figures cannot by themselves establish a full lifecycle result. For a useful comparison, the vehicles would also need comparable test conditions, usage assumptions and emissions boundaries.
