A video reported in September 2025 appears to show a vehicle ejecting a battery-like pack from beneath its body. News coverage claimed the pack traveled 3–6 metres and was ejected within one second, but those figures have not been independently verified in the sources available. The footage is best described as a reported demonstration—not proof of an approved production-car safety feature.
What the video appears to show
Footage circulating from September 19, 2025, reportedly showed a vehicle marked with the China Automotive Collision Repair & Technology Research Center name ejecting an object resembling a battery pack from underneath. Ningbo Evening News reported claims that the object traveled 3–6 metres and that ejection happened within one second. Those are reported figures, not independently measured performance results; no published test report or independent validation is identified in the sources cited here. (Ningbo Evening News, September 24, 2025)
The vehicle’s identity and the mechanism’s precise design remain uncertain. A dramatic video alone cannot establish how the system works, whether it can operate reliably in real incidents, or what happens to the pack after it is released.
Why the demonstrator was reportedly tested
Accounts differ on the concept’s intended purpose, and the difference matters. BitAuto reported that a representative of the center described the footage as an internal test, conducted with a safe surrounding area, for repair work involving batteries after thermal runaway—including removing or handling a battery. The same report also recounted another account that the research direction originally concerned side-insert battery swapping. Neither account amounts to an independently audited technical description of the design or its final intended use. (BitAuto / 天和汽车科学岛, September 24, 2025)

Joyson Electronics denied having any development cooperation with the center and said the technology was unrelated to the company. It should not be described as the system’s developer on the basis of the earlier partnership claim. (Ningbo Evening News, September 24, 2025)
Interesting Engineering reported that Chery-owned iCAR posted: “This has nothing to do with iCAR, please be rational.” That is a reported company social-media statement, not a regulator’s finding about the vehicle or the mechanism. (Interesting Engineering, September 25, 2025)

What the video does—and does not—establish
The clip may document a controlled demonstration of battery-pack ejection. The sources cited here do not establish that the system has undergone independent validation, received road-vehicle regulatory approval, been fitted to a production model, or become available to customers. Nor do they provide a full safety case showing that ejecting a heavy, potentially damaged battery reduces overall danger. The pack’s movement could create hazards of its own; the available reporting does not quantify those risks.
How China’s battery standard relates to the video
China’s GB 38031-2025 is a separate set of mandatory national requirements for traction batteries. The State Council of the People’s Republic of China reported that it was scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026. Among the reported changes are revised thermal-diffusion testing, a new bottom-impact test, and a short-circuit test after 300 fast-charge cycles, with a no-fire-or-explosion requirement under the specified test conditions. The standard sets battery-test requirements; it does not approve the ejection demonstrator. Its no-fire-or-explosion requirement applies under specified test conditions, not to every possible real-world crash, defect, or fire scenario.

Battery ejection, as described in the reporting, would move or separate a pack. Battery standards instead specify tests intended to assess battery hazards under defined conditions. Those are different purposes and kinds of evidence, not interchangeable solutions:

| Evidence described | A circulating demonstration video and reported claims about distance and timing; no independent validation is identified. | A published mandatory national standard with specified test requirements. |
| Context | Reported as an internal test in a controlled surrounding area. | Defined battery-test conditions; the standard is not evidence about this demonstrator. |
| Approval or fitment established? | No road approval, production fitment, customer availability, or full safety case is established by the sources cited here. | The standard’s requirements do not constitute approval of an ejection system. |
Separate research helps put the scale of EV-fire hazards in context without validating the ejection idea. A 2023 full-scale EV combustion experiment by researchers affiliated with the University of Science and Technology of China reported a maximum battery-pack jet-fire reach of about 2.6 metres in the initial stage and a maximum external heat flux of 4.878 kW/m². Those figures belong to that experiment and its conditions; they are not measurements of the 2025 demonstration or proof that ejection would make a fire safer.
