On a Chevy Silverado, code P0300 means the engine computer detected random or multiple-cylinder misfires. It does not identify the failed part, so replacing spark plugs, coils, or injectors based on this code alone is not a reliable fix. Start by checking whether the check-engine light is flashing, recording all diagnostic codes, and identifying the truck’s model year and engine.
What P0300 means on a Chevy Silverado
P0300 is a misfire finding, not a parts diagnosis. It indicates that the engine computer detected misfires that are random or occurring across multiple cylinders; the code alone does not tell you why they are happening or which component has failed.
The cause must be established through diagnosis for the specific truck. Plugs, ignition coils, injectors, air leaks, fuel issues, or mechanical faults may be avenues to investigate, but none is confirmed by P0300 alone.
Can you drive with a flashing check-engine light?
Treat a flashing check-engine light as urgent. Chevrolet’s 2015 Silverado 3500HD owner manual says a flashing light means a misfire has been detected and warns that it may damage the emission-control system. It advises reducing speed and avoiding hard acceleration and steep uphill grades. If towing, reduce cargo when possible.
#1 Best Overall
- One-piece, fired-in suppressor seal blends three glass types for a gas-tight seal that helps reduce radio frequency and engine interference, regulate spark plug energy, and protect against compression pressures for long life
- Double platinum point pad on center and ground electrode offer excellent durability and consistent voltage demands to help reduce wear on ignition system
- Pure copper core results in cooler electrode temperature for maximized durability and fouling resistance
- Some ACDelco GM Original Equipment parts may have formerly appeared as ACDelco Professional
That manual is for a specific model year and truck, so consult the owner manual for your Silverado. If the engine is shaking strongly, power is dropping, or the light keeps flashing, stop somewhere safe and arrange qualified help rather than continuing to tow or put the engine under load.
How to diagnose P0300 on your Silverado
- Record the symptoms and warning-light behavior. Note whether the check-engine light is steady or flashing, when the problem occurs, and whether you notice shaking, noise, or loss of power.
- Retrieve the complete code set. An OBD-II scanner can read diagnostic codes. Depending on the scanner and vehicle support, it may also provide additional misfire data. Enhanced GM data and features vary by tool.
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model year and engine; VIN and trim may be needed to confirm applicability. Engine and model-year differences matter when selecting diagnostic procedures or applying a service bulletin.
- Use the applicable diagnostic procedure. Chevrolet provides access to service and diagnostic manuals through Chevrolet Manuals and Guides. Follow the procedure for the exact vehicle rather than treating a generic list of possible causes as a diagnosis.
- Confirm the cause before replacing parts. Use test results to identify the failed system or component, verify parts fitment for the truck, and confirm the repair under the applicable service procedure. Clearing the code alone does not repair the misfire.
What GM bulletins say—and which Silverados they cover
GM service bulletins address particular symptoms and vehicle applications. They are not universal P0300 repair instructions.

2014–2015 Silverado 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86
GM bulletin PIP5259A, issued in February 2015, describes P0300 with a misfire on cylinder 4 and/or 6, or tick noise. If standard diagnosis does not isolate the cause, the bulletin recommends inspecting valve operation. A mechanically collapsed or stuck AFM lifter is one possible cause in those circumstances; the bulletin does not establish it as the cause of every P0300.
2017–2018 Silverado 6.6L L5P
GM bulletin PIP5582, issued in September 2018, discusses P0300 with grouped-cylinder misfires and related injector-circuit diagnostics. For associated injector-circuit codes, it directs technicians to testing in service information. It is not support for replacing all injectors.

Selected L5P diesel Silverado applications
GM bulletin 19-NA-187, issued in January 2022, covers listed applications that include 2017–2018 Silverado models with the L5P and 2019–2022 Silverado 2500/3500 models with the L5P. It describes a procedure to help identify a weak cylinder. The guidance is limited to the listed diesel applications and should not be applied to other Silverado engines.

Before approving a repair, ask whether it is supported by evidence from your truck and the right service information—not merely by the presence of P0300.

- Does the recommendation apply to your exact model year and engine?
- Do test results identify the affected cylinder, system, or component?
- Does the diagnosis follow the relevant GM service procedure or a bulletin that matches your symptoms and vehicle?
- Has the replacement part’s fitment been verified for your truck?
- Will the repair be checked afterward to confirm the misfire is resolved?
An OBD-II scanner can help retrieve codes, but it cannot prove which part failed. A technician with the appropriate service information and diagnostic equipment may be needed, particularly when the fault is intermittent or the engine is running poorly. Chevrolet’s Silverado maintenance and Certified Service information can help locate service options.
