Chevrolet’s Trax sales surged in 2024 as U.S. shoppers showed growing interest in lower-priced vehicles. That is evidence of an affordability-driven shift—not proof that all buyers are fed up with expensive cars or abandoning larger SUVs. With the average new vehicle selling for more than $47,000 and borrowing and insurance costs adding pressure, a small SUV can look like a more manageable way to buy new.
What Trax sales say about affordability
General Motors reported that Chevrolet Trax sales rose 84% for full-year 2024, making it a leader in the small-SUV segment. The company’s 2025 results release also put the average transaction price for all GM vehicles in the fourth quarter near $53,000. Those figures describe different things: Trax sales growth is a model-specific unit change, while the transaction price is an average across GM vehicles.

Other indicators point in the same direction. The Associated Press reported in 2024, citing CarGurus analysis, that vehicles priced from $20,000 to $30,000 accounted for 43% of individual-buyer sales growth. Cox Automotive data reported by AP put compact and subcompact vehicles at nearly 34% of new-vehicle sales. These figures suggest buyers are giving lower-priced vehicles more attention, but they do not show that every Trax buyer switched from a larger or pricier SUV.
In the first quarter of 2024, the Trax sold 37,588 units, according to GM data reported by AP. Chevrolet sales operations director Mike MacPhee said, “We’re basically doubling our (Trax) sales volume from last year.” The quarterly unit count and the full-year growth percentage cover different periods; they should not be treated as interchangeable measures.

Why the lower price can matter more than the badge or size
AP reported that the average new-vehicle selling price had exceeded $47,000 in 2024. It also cited an average auto-loan rate of 7.1%, attributed to Edmunds. A vehicle’s sticker price is only part of the affordability equation: interest adds to the total paid, while insurance and other ownership costs affect the monthly budget. AP reported average auto-insurance prices had risen 38% over the preceding two years.
At roughly $21,500, the Trax was cited by AP as outselling the entire Cadillac brand in the quarter discussed. That comparison illustrates the scale of demand for a relatively inexpensive vehicle; it does not establish that Trax buyers are former Cadillac shoppers or that the two serve the same needs.

GM said in a 2026 release covering 2025 results that nearly 700,000 Chevrolet and Buick models had starting prices below $30,000. That is a company-reported count across two brands, not a tally of Trax sales or a guarantee that every vehicle can be bought for its starting price. Taxes, fees, options, dealer pricing, and local availability affect the final cost.
Does this mean shoppers are downsizing from larger SUVs?
Some buyers may be trading space or features for a lower purchase price, but the figures above do not track individual buyers’ previous vehicles or explain why they chose the Trax. A model’s rising sales can reflect affordability, availability, product appeal, or a combination of factors. The evidence supports a shift toward more affordable choices in the market; it does not prove a universal rejection of large SUVs.

Nor does a lower starting price alone settle which vehicle is the better value. A small SUV may be a poor fit if it cannot comfortably carry a household’s passengers or cargo. A larger model may make more sense for towing or frequent long trips, depending on the specific vehicle and its costs. Compare equivalent model years and trims, because equipment and pricing can vary substantially.
How to compare a Trax with a larger vehicle
Compare the real cost and practical fit, not just the advertised price or a payment headline. Use current quotes for the vehicles and financing available to you; the market figures above are dated and are not a prediction of an individual buyer’s rate or transaction price.

- Monthly payment and total borrowing cost: Use the rate and loan term you actually qualify for, along with the same down payment and trade-in assumptions for both vehicles. A longer term can lower the monthly payment while increasing total interest.
- Space and equipment: Check seating, cargo capacity, child-seat fit, and the features you will use. Compare the exact trims rather than assuming a base model has the equipment of a more expensive version.
- Ownership costs: Get insurance quotes for both vehicles and consider fuel or energy use, maintenance, warranty coverage, and expected resale value. The figures cited here do not establish a universal reliability, feature, or resale winner.
Could lower interest rates reverse the trend?
The durability of the shift is uncertain. Cox Automotive chief economist Charlie Chesbrough told AP in 2024, “The trends will probably start to change if these interest rates start coming down.” Lower borrowing costs could make pricier vehicles more attainable, but the available figures do not establish how large or lasting any reversal would be.
GM’s 2026 release likewise reflects the company’s view of demand across its brands and price points, not a forecast that affordability will remain the dominant purchase factor. GM North America president Duncan Aldred said, “Demand for our brands and products is strong at every price point, and we are well-positioned to build on this momentum in the year ahead.” Sales, rates, incentives, and transaction prices can change, so buyers should compare current offers rather than assume the 2024 pattern will continue unchanged.
