That is evidence of a constrained return—not proof that buyers rejected the car. GM has called the Bolt a limited-run model, and the production estimate making headlines comes from a union local president, not the automaker.
What happened to the returning Bolt?
Chevrolet announced the 2027 Bolt on October 9, 2025, after the previous production run had ended. The company said the new Bolt would begin shipping in early 2026 and described it as a limited-run model from the announcement onward. Chevrolet vice president Scott Bell said the company had heard customers’ feedback and “their love for this product,” adding that the Bolt was returning “by popular demand.” That explains Chevrolet’s stated rationale; it does not independently measure how many customers wanted the car.
The return also came with a concrete value proposition in Chevrolet’s materials: a $29,990 launch-model LT MSRP, including a $1,395 destination and freight charge, and a later-announced LT price of $28,995 with that same charge included. Chevrolet’s final specification update, noted January 12, 2026, lists an EPA-estimated range of 262 miles. These are manufacturer-published prices and estimates, not independent test results. Why are people calling it a flop?
The sharpest evidence is a reported production estimate that is far below an earlier expectation. Reuters reported on September 29, 2026, that Dontay Wilson, president of the UAW local representing the Kansas City-area plant, estimated total Bolt production would reach about 35,000 vehicles before the run was expected to end in the first quarter of 2027. Wilson said the estimate was based on the plant’s daily production pace. Reuters said the plant had earlier been on track to make about 150,000.

Those figures are Wilson’s estimates as reported by Reuters, not GM-confirmed production totals or a revised official production target. GM declined to comment on Bolt production figures. The company told Reuters: “We continuously evaluate market dynamics and customer demand.” Reuters’ report on the production estimate
So “flopped” is defensible only as shorthand for a return whose reported production outlook is much smaller than an earlier expectation. It is not a demonstrated explanation for why the outlook changed. The available reporting does not establish whether demand, supply, timing, dealer availability, or another factor drove the difference.
What do Bolt deliveries tell us?
GM’s Q3 2026 U.S. delivery report lists 3,866 Bolt deliveries in the quarter and 8,090 from January through September 2026. Those figures show that the returning model was reaching buyers, but they do not by themselves explain the production estimate or reveal how many would-be customers could not find one. GM’s Q3 2026 U.S. delivery report
The same report shows 123 Bolt deliveries for January through September 2025. That number covers the discontinued predecessor period, not a comparable year of the returning 2027 model. Treating the two figures as a straightforward year-over-year demand comparison would be misleading.

Was the Bolt a weak product on paper?
Chevrolet’s published specifications positioned the Bolt as a relatively affordable EV with an EPA-estimated 262-mile range. The company also lists peak public DC charging of 150 kW or more and a 10-to-80-percent charging time of 25 minutes under its stated conditions. The 2027 Bolt is Chevrolet’s first vehicle with a native NACS charging port. These are manufacturer claims and estimates; they do not establish real-world range or charging performance.
Chevrolet also advertises vehicle-to-home capability, but it requires more than a standard home charger. GM says the feature requires its Energy PowerShift Charger and V2H Enablement Kit, a sufficiently charged and properly equipped compatible GM EV, a properly equipped home, and proper grid interconnection. What can a prospective buyer conclude?
The production estimate is a reason to check local inventory and confirm delivery timing with a dealer rather than assume the Bolt will remain available indefinitely. The available figures do not establish how much stock is near any particular buyer, or whether the reported production estimate became the final plan.
For shoppers, Chevrolet’s published price, range estimate, charging claims, and connector are useful starting points for assessing fit. They are not evidence here of comparative value against another EV, independent reliability, or real-world charging results. The available reporting also does not show that limited production resulted from buyers rejecting the car.
