What years are the C5 Corvette?
The C5 is the fifth-generation Chevrolet Corvette, covering the 1997 through 2004 model years. The generation began with a coupe in 1997. Chevrolet added a convertible for 1998 and a fixed-roof coupe for 1999. The fixed-roof body became the basis for the Z06.

How fast is a C5 Corvette?
There is no single acceleration time that applies to every C5. Performance varies with engine and trim, transmission, tires, test procedure, and the source reporting the result. The clearest comparison in the available specifications is engine output: the base LS1 started at 345 hp, rose to 350 hp in 2001, and the Z06’s LS6 reached 405 hp from 2002 onward.

What is the difference between a C5 and a C5 Z06?
“C5” names the whole generation; “Z06” identifies a high-performance version within it. The base Corvette used the LS1 V8. The 2001–2004 Z06 used the LS6, with output reaching 405 hp for 2002–2004, and added performance-specific chassis and equipment. It was based on the fixed-roof coupe.

The base car was available with a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Body style matters when comparing cars: the generation included a coupe, a fixed-roof coupe, and a convertible, while the Z06 was tied to the fixed-roof configuration. How much does a C5 Corvette cost?
Separate the original sticker price from today’s used-car market. Chevrolet announced a U.S. 1997 Corvette MSRP of $38,060 including destination freight charge, compared with $37,790 for the 1996 model. Those are historical prices, not current used-car values. The announcement was reproduced by the Corvette Action Center.

As of October 8, 2026, CLASSIC.COM’s C5 market page reported an average recorded sale price of $26,478. That aggregate spans different cars and sale circumstances; it is market context, not an appraisal or a reliable asking-price estimate for a particular Corvette. The same page records a $220,000 sale on March 11, 2026, for a 1999 Callaway C12 Speedster, and a $7,000 sale on July 6, 2023, for a 2002 Corvette convertible. There is no uniform current asking-price range established here for each year and configuration. For a meaningful comparison, match vehicles across the factors below rather than relying on a generation-wide average.

- Body style and transmission: compare like with like—coupe, fixed-roof coupe, or convertible, and manual or automatic where relevant.
- Mileage, condition, and records: review service documentation and the car’s overall condition, not mileage alone.
- Accident history and originality: check for crash damage and whether factory equipment remains intact.
- Modifications and special status: performance changes, limited or collector status, and the sale venue can make two nominally similar cars very different purchases.
What should you check before buying a C5?
Ask for maintenance records, examine the car for signs of crash damage, and review performance modifications carefully. Hagerty notes that many C5s have been used for track days, autocross, or spirited driving; that is a reason to investigate a particular car, not proof that every C5 has been driven hard or has a defect. When comparing photos, check that captions identify the correct model year, body style, and trim: a base coupe, a convertible, a fixed-roof coupe, and a Z06 are not interchangeable descriptions. Use images only when publication rights are clear, and caption them accurately. The generation’s most useful visual distinctions include the convertible’s open roof, the fixed-roof coupe’s permanent roof structure, and the Z06’s identity as the performance-specific fixed-roof model.
