The Chevrolet Beretta was an everyday front-wheel-drive coupe with sporty styling—not a performance car in every trim. Its GTU and GTZ versions added enthusiast appeal, and its 1990 connection to the Indianapolis 500 came with an important distinction: the commemorative replicas were coupes, not convertibles.
What was the Chevrolet Beretta?
The Beretta was a two-door coupe with a transverse front engine and front-wheel drive. It paired the practical layout of a mainstream Chevrolet with styling and trim choices that gave the car a sportier look. Its identity is best understood as an ordinary coupe with some more distinctive versions, rather than as a performance model across the entire range.
Beretta.net’s account says production began in 1986 for the 1987 model year, with early cars going to rental fleets, government agencies and GM employees before public dealer sales. It gives March 12, 1988, as the public launch date. That chronology comes from an enthusiast history page, not an official GM history, so the model-year start and public-launch date should not be conflated.
How did the GTU and GTZ differ?
GTU: a dealer-offered GT-based package
Beretta.net describes the GTU as a GT-based appearance and performance package offered through dealers for 1988 and 1989, following the Beretta’s participation in IMSA GTU racing. The package added distinctive wheels, ground effects, a spoiler, trim and decals. Those details distinguish it from a standard GT, but the history is secondary enthusiast reporting rather than a factory brochure.

GTZ: a more performance-focused 1990 trim
The same source describes the 1990 GTZ as a performance-oriented coupe with a high-output Quad 4 engine and FE7 sport suspension. It is a more specific enthusiast proposition than simply calling every Beretta a “sport” model: trim, engine and suspension mattered.
What engines and transmissions did the Beretta have?
Specifications varied by year and trim. General Motors’ 1995 Beretta specification kit, issued in September 1994, lists a 2.2-liter four-cylinder rated at 120 horsepower and a 3.1-liter V6 rated at 155 horsepower. It lists both five-speed manual and automatic transaxles. These figures describe the 1995 model year only; they should not be applied to earlier or later Berettas, including the GTZ’s Quad 4 configuration.
| 1995 configuration | GM-listed output | Transaxles listed in the 1995 kit |
|---|---|---|
| 2.2-liter four-cylinder | 120 hp | Five-speed manual or automatic |
| 3.1-liter V6 | 155 hp | Five-speed manual or automatic |

What was the Beretta’s connection to the 1990 Indianapolis 500?
Beretta.net recounts that five yellow convertibles served as pace cars for the 1990 Indianapolis 500 and says GM canceled the convertible project. The commemorative cars sold to the public were coupes, not convertibles. The enthusiast site reports 7,500 replicas in total—6,000 green and 1,500 yellow—but these counts are secondary-source claims, not manufacturer-verified statistics. A Beretta advertised as an Indy replica should therefore be judged by its actual configuration and documentation, not by assuming it is one of the pace-car convertibles.

Consumer Guide’s trouble-spot listings are inspection leads, not proof that a particular car has a defect. Have a candidate checked by a qualified mechanic, and match concerns to the car’s model year.
| Model years cited | Inspection lead | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1994–1996 | Cold-start engine noise | Listen at startup and have unexplained noise investigated. |
| 1992–1994 | Right-front axle-seal concern | Inspect the right-front axle area for signs of leakage. |
| 1991–1994 | Possible water leak onto right-front floor | Look for dampness and evidence of water entry around the base of the windshield. |
Consumer Guide also lists recall concerns involving the steering-wheel nut on 1991 cars, rocker reinforcement on 1994–1995 cars and an interior-light issue on 1996 cars. A model-year listing cannot establish whether an individual vehicle was affected or whether repairs were completed. Check recall status using the vehicle’s VIN and review its repair records.

Early interior details
Beretta.net’s 1987 model notes describe changes around the 1987–1988 transition and report that map pockets often broke on 1987–1990 cars; the site says GM addressed the issue in 1991. This is an owner-community observation, not a quantified failure rate. On an early car, inspect the pockets and other interior trim rather than assuming every example has the same problem.

That depends on the particular car, not the nameplate alone. A GTU or GTZ may be more interesting to an enthusiast because of its distinct equipment, while a base or other-trim coupe may better represent the Beretta’s everyday-car role. Compare model year, trim, engine, transmission, condition, originality and the availability of the parts needed for that specific car.
No reliable current market-price statistic, complete production total or surviving-car count is established by the sources cited here. For a purchase, compare current local listings for similar year and trim, then weigh condition and documentation rather than relying on an old price guide or a claimed rarity.
