The Chevrolet Colorado has three North American generations: 2004–2012, 2015–2022, and 2023–present. Chevrolet discontinued the nameplate after 2012, skipped the normal U.S. lineup for 2013 and 2014, returned with an all-new truck for 2015, and redesigned it again for 2023. The first generation succeeded the S-10, the second added the Duramax diesel and ZR2, and the third brought a crew-cab/short-bed format, 2.7L Turbo power, more useful bed features, and a modern digital cabin.

At a glance: three Colorado generations, with a two-year gap

The North American Chevrolet Colorado spans three distinct generations rather than one continuously evolving truck:

  • First generation: 2004–2012 — the S-10 successor, offered in regular-, extended-, and crew-cab configurations with several gasoline engines.
  • Second generation: 2015–2022 — the Colorado’s return after a production gap, adding a more refined platform, a diesel option, and the ZR2 off-road flagship.
  • Third generation: 2023–present — a clean-sheet redesign centered on a crew cab, short bed, 2.7L Turbo power, greater digital integration, and more useful bed features.

Chevrolet ended North American Colorado production after the 2012 model year. The nameplate was absent from the normal U.S. lineup for 2013 and 2014 before returning as an all-new truck for 2015. Chevrolet’s current model information also identifies 2004 as the original launch year and 2015 as the return year. [C001]

That history makes generation more important than the badge on the tailgate. A 2012 Colorado and a 2015 Colorado are fundamentally different trucks, and the change from 2022 to 2023 is another complete generational break—not merely a styling update.

First generation: 2004–2012

2004: Colorado replaces the S-10

Chevrolet introduced the Colorado for the 2004 model year as the replacement for the S-10. Archived Chevrolet launch material and owner documentation establish the original truck’s configuration and equipment range. [C002][C003]

The first-generation formula emphasized choice. Depending on model year, market, cab, and drivetrain, buyers could select a regular cab, extended cab, or crew cab; rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive; and a four-cylinder, five-cylinder, or V6 gasoline engine. That combination made the Colorado both a traditional compact-truck successor and an early example of the larger, more lifestyle-oriented midsize pickups that became common later.

The available body styles matter when comparing used trucks. A regular-cab Colorado can be a simple work vehicle, while an extended-cab or crew-cab truck may have a very different wheelbase, seating arrangement, bed length, equipment level, and resale appeal. The engine and drivetrain also affect towing, payload, fuel economy, and parts compatibility.

2005–2011: continuous development rather than a new generation

Chevrolet did not replace the first-generation Colorado with a clean-sheet redesign during this period. Instead, it refined the truck through changes to equipment, styling, engines, trims, packages, and body-style availability. Period Chevrolet brochures are the best way to distinguish one model year from another because they document the engines, cabs, drivetrains, packages, and standard and optional equipment offered in each year. Consequently, “2004–2012 Colorado” is not a single uniform specification. A comparison that covers this entire span should identify at least the model year, cab style, engine, drivetrain, axle ratio, and significant factory packages. Even within the same generation, those details can change the truck’s capability and equipment substantially.

2012: the first generation ends

The 2012 Colorado was the final model year of the first-generation North American run. It is important in used-truck research because it is the last Colorado before Chevrolet discontinued the nameplate in the region for two model years. [C001][C004]

Today, first-generation Colorados are primarily used-truck, maintenance, restoration, and repair subjects. An original Chevrolet owner manual can help identify controls, safety systems, operating instructions, and maintenance terminology, but it is not a complete repair manual and does not prove that every listed feature appeared on every trim. [C003]

For detailed work, begin with a year-specific Chevrolet Colorado service manual that matches the truck’s generation and engine. Do not assume that a procedure, part, or specification from a later Colorado applies to a 2004–2012 truck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2013–2014: the Colorado production gap

There was no normal U.S.-market Chevrolet Colorado for the 2013 or 2014 model years. North American production ended after 2012, and Chevrolet describes the nameplate as returning in 2015 after a brief production stop. [C001]

This is more than a footnote in the timeline. A vehicle registered in 2014 may be an older model year, an imported vehicle, or a different Chevrolet truck; it should not automatically be described as a 2014 Colorado in the normal U.S. lineup. Buyers should verify the VIN, title, model-year designation, and market before ordering parts or comparing specifications.

Second generation: 2015–2022

2015: the Colorado returns as an all-new midsize pickup

Chevrolet brought the Colorado back for 2015 as an all-new midsize pickup. Contemporary Chevrolet sales material identifies it as an all-new Colorado and documents strong early interest after launch. [C005]

The second generation was more substantial and refined than the first-generation truck, with a newer cabin, updated proportions, and a renewed focus on competing directly in the modern midsize-pickup market. The launch range used a four-cylinder engine as the entry powertrain and offered a 3.6L V6, along with rear- and four-wheel-drive configurations. Extended-cab and crew-cab body styles were available depending on trim and equipment.

Exact output, transmission, payload, towing, axle ratios, bed lengths, and body-style availability should be checked by model year and configuration. A general second-generation specification is not precise enough for a purchase decision or towing calculation. Chevrolet’s archived brochures provide the necessary year-specific detail. [C004]

2016: the 2.8L Duramax diesel arrives

The major powertrain expansion came for 2016, when Chevrolet made a 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel four-cylinder available in the Colorado. The diesel gave the truck a distinct position in the U.S. midsize segment, pairing strong low-speed torque with a towing-oriented character. [C004]

Not every diesel Colorado has the same equipment or capability. Availability varied with trim, drivetrain, cab, and other configuration details, so buyers should use the brochure or factory documentation for the specific truck rather than apply one diesel rating to every 2016–2022 model.

2017: ZR2 makes serious off-road performance central to the nameplate

The Colorado ZR2 arrived for 2017 and became the defining performance variant of the second generation. Chevrolet describes the ZR2 as having relaunched on Colorado in 2017 and positions the badge around high-performance capability on and off the road. [C006]

The production ZR2 was substantially more than an appearance package. Its equipment included specialized suspension tuning, increased clearance, Multimatic DSSV dampers, locking differentials, and model-specific off-road hardware. Chevrolet’s technical material also connects Colorado ZR2 racing and performance development with the validation of factory and dealer-available performance components. [C007]

That hardware changed how the Colorado was perceived. Earlier Colorados could be practical midsize pickups with available off-road equipment; the ZR2 made factory-developed off-road performance a central part of the truck’s identity.

2018: the second-generation range settles into place

The 2018 Colorado continued with four-cylinder, V6, and available Duramax diesel powertrains, along with the WT, LT, Z71, and ZR2 trim strategy. The Z71 occupied the less extreme off-road position, while the ZR2 remained the high-performance flagship. [C004]

For used buyers, the distinction is important: a Z71 and a ZR2 are not interchangeable descriptions. Their equipment, suspension hardware, intended use, and likely ownership history can differ. Check the original equipment list and VIN rather than relying only on badges or aftermarket appearance changes.

2019: ZR2 Bison adds AEV-developed protection

For 2019, Chevrolet introduced the Colorado ZR2 Bison through a collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles, or AEV. Chevrolet later described the Bison as a popular special-edition package with purpose-built overlanding and underbody-protection equipment. [C008]

The Bison’s significance is functional as well as visual. Its identity is tied to stamped-steel bumpers, additional protection, and equipment intended for demanding trail use. A used Bison should still be inspected carefully underneath: trail equipment can show evidence of impacts, modifications, or hard use, and the Bison package does not eliminate the need to check the frame, suspension, differentials, tires, and underbody.

2020: a mature late-cycle Colorado

By 2020, the second-generation Colorado was a mature product with established gasoline, diesel, work, comfort, and off-road variants. It was not a new generation or a clean-sheet redesign. The 2020 brochure remains the appropriate reference for exact trim content, available engines, cab and bed combinations, and towing figures. [C004]

2021: exterior refresh and trim rationalization

Chevrolet refreshed the Colorado’s exterior for 2021, primarily revising the grille and bumpers. The U.S. trim structure was also reduced to Work Truck, LT, Z71, and ZR2. [C009] Chevrolet’s materials also document the truck’s production and supply context during the semiconductor-constrained period. [C010]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, 2021 is a refresh year, not a new generation. It remains fundamentally the same second-generation truck underneath, so buyers should compare its revised appearance and equipment against the price and condition of 2020 and 2022 examples.

2022: the second generation’s final year

The 2022 Colorado was the last model year of the second generation in North America. Chevrolet’s commercial brochure documents the final WT, LT, Z71, and ZR2 structure, as well as the available cab and interior configurations. [C011]

The distinction between 2022 and 2023 is especially important in advertisements and pricing research. A 2022 is a late example of the second-generation platform; a 2023 is an all-new truck with a different body-style strategy, cabin, powertrain family, bed design, and technology package.

Third generation: 2023–present

2023: a clean-sheet redesign

Chevrolet introduced the all-new 2023 Colorado on July 28, 2022. The redesign replaced the previous architecture and centered the lineup on a 2.7L Turbo engine family with three output variants. It also added a standard 11.3-inch-diagonal infotainment touchscreen, more functional bed features, and three distinct chassis setups. [C012]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The body-style strategy became much simpler. In the U.S. lineup, the third-generation Colorado was offered as a crew-cab pickup with a short bed rather than continuing the second generation’s broader extended-cab and crew-cab mix. That makes cab and bed fitment more straightforward within 2023–2026 trucks, but it also means a third-generation Colorado is not a direct replacement for every older cab-and-bed configuration.

Bed usability became a central part of the redesign. Available features included a mid-position tailgate, integrated tailgate storage, and a 110-volt power outlet. These additions matter to owners carrying tools, camping equipment, bicycles, or other bulky cargo—not just to buyers comparing horsepower figures. [C012]

2023 trim strategy: WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2

The 2023 lineup included Work Truck, LT, Z71, ZR2, and the first-ever Colorado Trail Boss model. Chevrolet positioned the trims around different priorities: WT for work value, LT for everyday comfort, Trail Boss and Z71 for progressively more trail-oriented use, and ZR2 as the performance off-road flagship. [C013]

The three-chassis approach is more useful than treating every trim as a cosmetic step. Chevrolet designed the third-generation truck around distinct road, trail, and high-performance off-road setups. Equipment, suspension tuning, tires, clearance, and available technology should therefore be considered together when comparing trims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2023 ZR2: more specialized off-road hardware

The third-generation ZR2 retained its position at the top of the Colorado off-road range but received a more specialized package. Chevrolet lists 33-inch mud-terrain tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, revised bumpers and fascia, underbody protection, rocker protection, and a modified rear axle as standard ZR2 equipment. Those features make the ZR2 fundamentally different from a Colorado that merely has an off-road appearance package. They also create practical ownership considerations: tire replacement, suspension parts, underbody inspection, and recovery equipment should all be matched to the truck’s actual configuration and intended use.

2024: continuation and Truck of the Year recognition

The 2024 Colorado continued the third-generation design and trim lineup. Chevrolet announced that MotorTrend named Colorado its 2024 Truck of the Year, following earlier Colorado wins for the 2015 and 2016 model years. The announcement highlighted the modern interior, versatile bed, feature content, and off-road capability. [C013]

That is third-party editorial recognition reported by Chevrolet, not proof that every Colorado is best for every buyer or that the award replaces independent testing. Use it as context alongside configuration, price, test drives, ownership condition, and the truck’s intended job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2025: the third-generation formula continues

The 2025 Colorado continued the third-generation formula: a crew cab with a short box, 2.7L Turbo-based power, a digital cabin, and WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 trim strategies. Package availability and pricing can change during a model year, so current Chevrolet model-year materials are more reliable than an older summary. [C001][C015]

2026: current model year in the supplied research

As of the supplied research date, August 12, 2026, Chevrolet lists the 2026 Colorado as the current model year. Every 2026 Colorado uses the 2.7L TurboMax I-4, rated by Chevrolet at 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet lists maximum available trailering capacity of 7,700 pounds. [C015]

The current truck also offers an 11.3-inch center touchscreen and an 11-inch driver-information display. Available technology includes Google built-in, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and underbody cameras. These features are not necessarily standard on every trim, so the window sticker and build sheet matter when comparing two 2026 trucks.

Chevrolet’s current materials show WT, Custom, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 as the primary 2026 trim levels. They also list a Colorado ZR2 Bison and a Stars & Steel special edition. [C015][C016] Special-edition availability, dealer inventory, incentives, pricing, and individual equipment can change, so those details should be rechecked in the live configurator and on the applicable window sticker before publication or purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TurboMax name is a current branding point for the 2.7L engine; it does not represent a fourth Colorado generation. The truck remains part of the third-generation family that began with the 2023 redesign.

How to compare Colorado model years accurately

  1. Start with the generation. A 2012 and a 2015 may share the Colorado name, but they have different platforms, interiors, body-style strategies, and powertrain lineups. The same is true of 2022 and 2023.
  2. Separate model year from calendar year. A truck sold or registered late in 2022 may be a 2023 model. Decode the VIN and check the title, build label, or factory documentation.
  3. Verify the complete configuration. Engine, drivetrain, cab, bed, axle ratio, tires, suspension, and factory packages can materially change towing, payload, fuel economy, clearance, and off-road behavior. Never infer towing or payload from engine output alone.
  4. Do not equate Z71, ZR2, and ZR2 Bison. Z71 is an off-road-oriented trim, ZR2 is the high-performance off-road model, and Bison is a specialized package or edition built around additional protection. They are different equipment levels, not different generations.
  5. Use year-specific documentation. Archived brochures and official owner documents are more dependable for exact equipment and procedures than generalized model summaries. The owner manual explains operation and maintenance terminology; it should not be mistaken for a comprehensive repair manual. [C003][C004][C011]
  6. Verify accessories by fitment, not by name. Chevrolet’s accessory catalog itself uses year-specific applications—for example, a bedslide listing covering 2023–2026 Colorado trims does not establish fitment for earlier Colorados. [C017]

Which Colorado generation fits which buyer?

Choose a first-generation Colorado for a traditional used compact pickup

A 2004–2012 truck makes the most sense for shoppers who specifically want the first-generation configuration range, including regular-cab and extended-cab choices that disappeared from the later U.S. lineup. It can also suit a repair-minded buyer who values a simpler, older used truck, but condition, maintenance history, rust, drivetrain configuration, and parts availability should be evaluated truck by truck rather than assumed from the model year.

Choose a 2015–2016 Colorado for the second-generation platform at its earliest stage

The first two years of the second generation provide the newer cabin and midsize-truck proportions, with the 2016 model adding the available Duramax diesel. Compare the exact engine, drivetrain, cab, and equipment list: a 2015 gasoline truck and a 2016 diesel truck are not interchangeable simply because they belong to the same generation.

Choose a 2017–2022 Colorado for established ZR2 and diesel choices

This range contains the second-generation ZR2, the 2019 ZR2 Bison, the established gasoline and diesel lineup, and the 2021 exterior refresh. A 2017–2020 truck may appeal to a buyer seeking the earlier ZR2 or diesel configuration, while a 2021–2022 truck offers the late-cycle exterior and final second-generation equipment structure. Confirm whether a particular truck is WT, LT, Z71, ZR2, or Bison before comparing prices.

Choose a 2023–2026 Colorado for the newest cabin and bed design

The third generation is the choice for buyers who prioritize the current crew-cab/short-bed format, the 11.3-inch infotainment display, available bed-storage features, the 2.7L Turbo family, and newer driver-facing technology. The 2026 model adds the current TurboMax output and listed technology, but price and equipment should be confirmed from live Chevrolet materials.

Choose Z71, Trail Boss, ZR2, or Bison based on the actual trail use

For occasional rough-road travel, a Z71 or Trail Boss may provide a more appropriate balance than the specialized ZR2. For factory-developed high-performance off-road hardware, compare ZR2 models. For additional underbody and bumper protection, investigate the ZR2 Bison specifically. The correct choice depends on clearance, suspension, tires, locking differentials, protection, daily-road comfort, and budget—not merely on the trim name.

Ownership and accessory fitment checklist

Colorado accessory catalogs often group products by vehicle name, but the fitment details are decisive. Before ordering, record:

  • Model year and generation
  • VIN, when available
  • Cab style and bed length
  • Two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive
  • Trim and special edition
  • Factory suspension, running boards, bed systems, cameras, and other options
  • Whether the product is designed for an original or modified truck

For interior protection, compare Colorado floor liners by year and cab configuration rather than choosing a generic Colorado listing. A crew-cab, short-bed third-generation truck and an extended-cab second-generation truck can require different floor shapes, mounting points, and coverage.

The same caution applies to the bed. A Colorado tonneau cover or cargo organizer must match the generation, box length, tailgate design, and any factory bed-storage equipment. A product listed for 2023–2026 short-bed trucks should not be assumed to fit a 2004–2012 or 2015–2022 bed. Chevrolet’s own accessory listings demonstrate why year-specific fitment checks are necessary. [C017]

Off-road owners should treat Colorado off-road recovery gear as task-specific equipment, not as a substitute for recovery training or vehicle-rated hardware. Match straps, boards, inflators, compressors, shackles, and mounting points to their load ratings and to the truck’s recovery points. Z71, Trail Boss, ZR2, and Bison equipment can differ, and aftermarket modifications may change safe use.

What not to assume from a Colorado model year

  • Do not call one generation categorically the most reliable. That conclusion requires a defined dataset, maintenance history, mileage controls, and a stated methodology.
  • Do not treat Chevrolet awards or marketing claims as independent test results. Awards provide context; they do not guarantee a particular truck will suit every owner.
  • Do not infer towing or payload from horsepower alone. Engine, transmission, axle ratio, drivetrain, tires, cooling equipment, cab, bed, and factory packages all matter.
  • Do not assume an accessory fits every Colorado. Generation, cab, bed, trim, and factory options can change fitment.
  • Do not mistake a refresh for a generation change. The 2021 update remained second generation; the 2023 truck was all-new.

Bottom line

For the North American Chevrolet Colorado, the decisive breaks are 2004, 2015, and 2023. The first generation is the broad-configuration S-10 successor; the second is the refined return that introduced the Duramax, ZR2, and ZR2 Bison; and the third is the crew-cab/short-bed redesign built around 2.7L Turbo power, digital technology, and improved bed utility. Identify the generation first, then verify the exact model year, engine, drivetrain, cab, bed, trim, and packages before comparing capability, maintenance, or accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was there a 2013 or 2014 Chevrolet Colorado?

Chevrolet Colorado production stopped in North America after the 2012 model year. The nameplate returned for 2015 as an all-new second-generation midsize pickup. There was no normal U.S.-market Colorado lineup for the 2013 and 2014 model years.

Is the 2023 Colorado a new generation?

The 2023 Colorado is the start of the third generation. It replaced the second-generation architecture, adopted a crew-cab/short-bed U.S. configuration, introduced the 2.7L Turbo engine family, and added a new cabin, bed features, and digital technology.

What engine does the 2026 Chevrolet Colorado have?

The 2026 Colorado uses the 2.7L TurboMax I-4 with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet lists maximum available trailering capacity of 7,700 pounds, but exact capability depends on configuration and equipment.

What is the difference between Colorado Z71, ZR2, and ZR2 Bison?

The ZR2 is Chevrolet’s high-performance off-road Colorado. The ZR2 Bison adds specialized protection and equipment through Chevrolet’s AEV collaboration in the second-generation version and as a current special offering. Z71 and Trail Boss are different trims and should not be treated as equivalent to ZR2.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Colorado has three North American generations—2004–2012, 2015–2022, and 2023–present—with a 2013–2014 production gap. The most accurate comparison starts with generation and then moves to the truck’s exact engine, drivetrain, cab, bed, trim, and factory equipment.
