If you want a fun used Japanese car, start by matching the car to how you will use it—not by trusting a blanket “cheapest” ranking. The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the open-top, two-seat choice; the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86/GR86 add a small rear seat and coupe practicality; the Honda Civic Si is the sedan option. Prices depend on your market, the specific car, and its condition, so compare local listings rather than assuming any model fits a set budget.
Here, “JDM” is used conversationally for Japanese models sold in the U.S. It does not mean that every U.S.-market example was imported from Japan.
Which used Japanese sports car fits your needs?
| Model | Body and practicality | Drive and transmission | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda MX-5 Miata | Two-seat roadster; limited passenger and cargo space | Rear-wheel drive; manual or automatic availability depends on model year | Drivers who want a light, open-top experience and do not need extra seats |
| Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 / GR86 | Coupe with a tight rear seat, often more useful for cargo than passengers | Rear-wheel drive; manual or automatic availability depends on model year | Drivers who want a coupe and some flexibility beyond a two-seat roadster |
| Honda Civic Si | Sedan with usable rear seating | Edmunds describes the cited example with a six-speed manual; check the exact year and trim | Drivers who want an enthusiast-oriented car with everyday passenger practicality |
The figures below come from Edmunds’ descriptions of 2025 models, not every used generation. They help distinguish those newer examples; verify the year, trim, and transmission of any car you are considering.
Mazda MX-5 Miata
Edmunds describes the 2025 Miata as a 181-horsepower four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual or automatic. Edmunds measured 0–60 mph in 6.4 seconds in its test; that result is specific to its test, not a guarantee for a used Miata of another year or condition. The Miata’s defining trade-off is its two-seat, open-air layout: it gives up rear seating and substantial cargo capacity.

Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 / GR86
Edmunds describes the 2025 BRZ and GR86 as mechanically related, with a 228-horsepower four-cylinder driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or automatic. It says manual versions can reach 60 mph in about six seconds. The rear seat is tight, so think of the coupe as offering occasional extra space or cargo flexibility rather than comfortable family seating.
For older used examples, Edmunds/AP’s June 2026 guide covers 2017–2020 BRZ and Toyota 86 models. It notes that the 2017 update brought meaningful gearing and suspension-tuning improvements, that Toyota examples are often slightly cheaper, and that BRZ Performance-package cars are desirable for their upgraded brakes and suspension. Those are guide observations, not promises about a particular listing or its price.

Honda Civic Si
Edmunds describes the Civic Si example in its budget-performance article as a 200-horsepower car with a six-speed manual, spacious rear seats, and comparatively strong fuel economy. Treat those specifications as belonging to the article’s model-year context; Civic Si equipment and performance vary across generations. Its main appeal among these choices is the combination of an enthusiast-oriented manual and sedan practicality.

No single price establishes which of these cars is cheapest for you. The June 2026 Edmunds/AP guide frames its used-car coverage around performance cars below $25,000, including its discussion of 2017–2020 BRZ and 86 models; that is not a live quote or a guarantee that a suitable car is available under that amount in your area. Edmunds lists a $30,715 starting price for a new 2025 Miata, which is new-car context—not a used Miata price.

A $10,000–$15,000 budget appears in one 2023 reader post asking for a non-American manual sports car. It is an example of buyer wording, not evidence that these models currently sell within that range. Check current local listings and compare cars with similar years, trims, mileage, and condition.
When comparing asking prices, account for the car itself, not just the badge. A lower-priced example may have high mileage, accident or title concerns, modifications, missing service records, or inspection findings that change its value. The available evidence does not establish a model-by-model reliability ranking or condition-specific ownership costs, so do not treat a general reputation or a single listing as proof of a good buy.

What to check before buying
- Set your space and driving priorities. Decide whether two seats and open-air driving are worth the Miata’s space limits, whether a BRZ/86/GR86 coupe’s small rear seat is useful, or whether the Civic Si’s sedan layout better suits your regular passengers.
- Compare like with like. Use listings in your location and compare model year, trim, transmission, mileage, title status, and condition. Do not transfer newer-model specifications to older cars without checking the exact version.
- Review the car’s history. Check accident and title history, modifications, and service records. A manual enthusiast car may have been modified or driven hard, but the model name alone cannot establish how a particular example was treated.
- Check recalls by VIN. Confirm any open recalls using the vehicle identification number rather than assuming a model-wide description settles the question.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified inspector assess the specific car before purchase; use the findings to understand its present condition, not to infer reliability for every example of that model.
