Caterpillar and Ultium Cells have announced separate U.S. manufacturing plans with headline figures of about $1 billion each. Caterpillar intends to expand compact construction equipment production in Sanford, North Carolina; Ultium Cells plans upgrades at its battery facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee, for future GM electric vehicles. The amounts cover different scopes, and the announcements do not describe a joint investment.

Both are forward-looking company announcements. Their similar headline amounts should not obscure the different products, locations, accounting, or schedules.
What is Caterpillar investing in?
Caterpillar said on September 30, 2026, that it intends to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina to expand manufacturing capacity supporting its Cat Compact business. The plan includes a new facility in Sanford designed to increase production of compact track loaders and telehandlers in response to customer demand. Caterpillar’s announcement frames the equipment as serving small contractors and growing businesses.
Compact track loaders and telehandlers are used in construction, landscaping, agriculture, and material handling. Caterpillar says they help move materials and manage jobsites. It expects the planned facility to use advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, digital production systems, and integrated logistics; these are intended features, not evidence that the plant is already operating.

Where is the new Caterpillar factory?
The planned facility is in Sanford, North Carolina. Caterpillar has not given a completion date, production-capacity figure, or specific job count in the announcement. It says the expansion is expected to create advanced manufacturing career opportunities involving skills such as automation, robotics, digital manufacturing, and advanced production systems.
What is Ultium Cells investing in?
Ultium Cells LLC, the joint venture of General Motors and LG Energy Solution, announced on September 28, 2026, that it will upgrade its Spring Hill, Tennessee, battery-cell facility to make LMR cells for future GM electric vehicles. The company says the site is expected to be the first in the world to mass-produce prismatic LMR cells. Facility modifications are expected to start later in 2026 and be complete in 2028; those are planned dates, not completed milestones. Ultium Cells’ announcement describes the $1 billion figure as the combined investment for its LMR and LFP programs and facility improvements by 2030.

The Spring Hill site already produces LFP cells for energy-storage systems for LG Energy Solution Vertech customers, with production beginning in June 2026, according to Ultium. The company describes a broader product mix of high-nickel, LFP, and LMR chemistries in pouch and prismatic formats for EV and energy-storage applications. A historical U.S. Department of Energy project summary identifies Ultium Cells as the GM–LG Energy Solution joint venture and lists facilities in Lordstown, Ohio; Spring Hill, Tennessee; and Lansing, Michigan. The 2026 investment at issue here is for Spring Hill.
What does LMR battery mean?
LMR stands for lithium manganese-rich, a battery-cell chemistry Ultium says it plans to produce in prismatic form at Spring Hill. “Prismatic” describes the cell format; it is distinct from the chemistry itself. Ultium’s product mix also includes other chemistries and formats, so the planned LMR cells should not be taken to describe every cell the company makes.

Ultium Cells and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development say LMR has the potential for 33% higher energy density than LFP at comparable cost. That is an announced potential comparison, not an independently verified result from the planned Spring Hill production. The state agency’s announcement also describes the project.

Ultium projects 500 additional jobs at Spring Hill, on top of a stated current workforce of 1,200. The 500 figure is a projection tied to the upgrade, not a count of jobs already created. It is separate from Caterpillar’s Sanford project, for which the company has not provided a specific job number.
