There is not enough period-specific evidence to name 10 distinct new cars that cost under ₹5 lakh in India in 2021. The sources support a shorter list of models, with prices that vary by date and city. The figures below are historical ex-showroom references—not current offers or on-road costs—and they do not establish an objective “best” ranking.
How many new cars were actually under ₹5 lakh?
The Economic Times published a March 2021 roundup of five cars below the ₹5 lakh ceiling. Late-2021 coverage added the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Celerio, whose launch price began at ₹4.99 lakh. Those reports do not substantiate a list of 10 distinct models. Counting trims as separate cars, or including cars priced at or above the limit, would make the headline count misleading.
For this guide, “under ₹5 lakh” means strictly less than ₹5 lakh. That excludes the Tata Tiago, which Autocar India reported as starting at exactly ₹5 lakh in late 2021. The prices cited are reported ex-showroom references, not final purchase costs.
Historically supported options
| Model | Reported 2021 price | Date and market context | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datsun redi-GO | ₹2.86–4.82 lakh | March 17, 2021; ex-showroom Delhi | The Economic Times describes 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre petrol variants and an automated manual transmission option. |
| Maruti Suzuki Alto | ₹3 lakh starting price; a separate dealer listing gives ₹3.15 lakh for the STD | The Economic Times roundup, March 2021; RNS Motors Limited dealer list, effective September 7, 2021, Bengaluru ex-showroom | The two figures come from different dates and contexts and should not be treated as one definitive price. |
| Renault Kwid | ₹3.13 lakh starting price | The Economic Times roundup, March 2021 | This is a historical reported starting price. Renault’s current price page is not evidence of the 2021 price. |
| Maruti Suzuki S-Presso | Not stated in the cited March 2021 roundup | The Economic Times roundup, March 2021; included among cars below ₹5 lakh | The source supports inclusion under the ceiling, but not a specific price in the cited material. |
| Maruti Suzuki Celerio, new generation | ₹4.99 lakh launch starting price | Late 2021; Autocar India launch coverage | A near-ceiling price reported at launch late in the year, not a price applicable throughout 2021. |
| Hyundai Santro | ₹4.77–6.45 lakh | Late 2021; Autocar India | The reported entry price is below ₹5 lakh, while the range extends above the ceiling. |
How to interpret the prices
Ex-showroom is not the on-road amount
Ex-showroom references do not include the full amount a buyer pays after registration, insurance and applicable local charges. The sources include Delhi reporting and a Bengaluru dealer list; local taxes and charges can change the final figure. Check a local, date-specific quote before treating any historical price as a budget estimate.

Do not backdate current prices
Renault’s current Kwid page lists a starting price of ₹4,52,900 and says the displayed ex-showroom price excludes local taxes and that the purchase-date price applies. That current listing does not establish what the Kwid cost in 2021. Current Maruti listings likewise cannot be used to reconstruct the S-Presso’s historical trims or prices.
What the sources can—and cannot—say about choosing
The cited material provides limited comparison points: the redi-GO is described with two petrol engine choices and an AMT option, while the other reports primarily establish entry prices or inclusion under the budget ceiling. It does not provide comparable evidence to rank these models by safety, reliability, mileage, ownership costs or overall value. Treat this as a record of reported price eligibility, not a tested “best cars” ranking.
