Ferrari, Porsche and the Ford Mustang are three prominent cars or automotive identities with horse emblems—but the horse appears at a different level in each. Ferrari’s Prancing Horse is associated with its racing history, Porsche places a horse in its manufacturer crest, and the running horse is a Mustang model badge, not Ford’s general corporate logo.
Cars and manufacturers with horse logos
| Example | Where the horse appears | What the source establishes | Supported date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferrari | Prancing Horse emblem associated with Scuderia Ferrari | Ferrari’s official motorsport history verifies the emblem’s debut on Scuderia cars; it does not establish the horse’s deeper origin. | 1932: debut on Scuderia Ferrari cars, according to Ferrari. |
| Porsche | Horse centered in the manufacturer crest | Porsche says the horse came from Stuttgart’s seal. The crest also incorporates Stuttgart’s name and regional heraldic elements. | 1952: crest created and first seen on a horn button, according to Porsche. |
| Ford Mustang | Running horse model emblem | Ford’s account identifies Phil Clark as the designer and discusses the selection of the Mustang logo. The horse identifies the Mustang, not every Ford vehicle. | 1964: Ford de México says Ford selected the design. |
Ferrari: the Prancing Horse
Ferrari’s Prancing Horse is one of the best-known horse emblems in motoring. Ferrari’s official motorsport history says it first appeared on Scuderia Ferrari cars in 1932: Ferrari’s account of the emblem’s return to the track.

That date establishes when the emblem debuted on Scuderia cars. The cited Ferrari page does not verify the horse’s earlier origin, so it is best not to treat familiar origin stories as confirmed by this account.
Porsche: a horse inside the manufacturer crest
Porsche’s horse is not a separate, standalone company mark: it sits at the center of the Porsche crest. Porsche says the crest was created in early 1952 by designer Franz Xaver Reimspieß. Its horse was taken from the seal of Stuttgart, while the city name, regional colors and stylized antlers connect the design to Stuttgart and Württemberg-Hohenzollern. Porsche says the crest first appeared on a horn button at the end of 1952, then later moved to the hood handle of the Porsche 356 Speedster. See Porsche’s history of how the crest was created.

Porsche crest replacements are model- and year-specific
Porsche Classic’s replacement catalog lists crest applications for historic 356, 911, 924, 928, 944, 959, 964, 968, 993, 986 and 996 models. The catalog distinguishes versions and part numbers, so a crest that looks right is not necessarily the correct fit. Check the part number against the exact model and year in Porsche Classic’s original crest catalog.
Rank #2
Ford Mustang: a horse for one model line
The running horse is the emblem of the Ford Mustang, not a horse logo used across Ford’s full vehicle range. In a 2022 account, Ford de México credits Phil Clark with designing the Mustang logo then in use and says Ford selected the design in 1964. The article also mentions earlier naming directions, including Cougar, Allegro, Torino and Avanti. The retrieved account supports those limited points, but does not fully explain why the horse was chosen: Ford de México’s Mustang logo history.
How to tell these horse emblems apart
- Look at the identity using it: Ferrari’s emblem is associated with Scuderia Ferrari; Porsche’s horse is part of the manufacturer crest; the Mustang horse marks a Ford model line.
- Separate visual similarity from origin: Porsche explicitly links its horse to Stuttgart’s seal. The cited Ferrari account confirms a 1932 racing debut but not an earlier origin, while the retrieved Ford account does not fully establish why the Mustang design uses a horse.
- Check the context and date: A debut date, the history of a symbol and the identity that uses it are different facts. The dates here refer to the specific milestones described by each automaker.
Are these all the cars with a horse logo?
No. Ferrari, Porsche and Mustang are three prominent examples supported by the automakers’ accounts cited here, not a complete worldwide catalogue. Other historic marques, regional manufacturers and specialty vehicles may also use horse imagery.
