CarPlay’s iOS 18.4 Upgrades Hint at a Promising New Trend

iOS 18.4 did not reinvent CarPlay, but its large-screen and EV-routing improvements suggest Apple is refining conventional CarPlay alongside its deeper CarPlay Ultra strategy.

iOS 18.4 did not deliver a redesigned CarPlay, but its modest changes pointed in an important direction: Apple appeared to be improving the CarPlay experience people already use while continuing to pursue deeper, automaker-dependent integration through CarPlay Ultra.

The update added a third row of icons on some large vehicle displays and improved Apple Maps behavior for EV routes involving NACS adapters. Neither feature is universal, and Apple did not present them as headline iOS 18.4 additions. But together, they suggested that conventional CarPlay had not been forgotten.

What iOS 18.4 actually changed

The most visible change was a third row of app icons on some large CarPlay screens. Previously, certain wide or high-resolution displays left considerable unused space while showing only two rows. Reporting found that iOS 18.4 used more of that space in some vehicles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is not a universal “three-row mode.” The result depends on the vehicle’s infotainment system, the display’s characteristics and Apple’s compatibility behavior. Two cars with similarly sized screens may present different layouts. There is no iPhone setting that forces the additional row.

iOS 18.4 also brought attention to EV routing involving the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Apple Maps could provide route information indicating that a Tesla/NACS adapter might be required, helping drivers account for connector compatibility when planning a trip. That is useful context, but it is not the same as universal access to every NACS charger.

These findings came from testing and subsequent reporting rather than from a prominent CarPlay section in Apple’s official iOS 18.4 release notes. Those notes focused mainly on Apple Intelligence, emoji, Image Playground, Apple News+, Photos, bug fixes and security updates. See the official iOS release notes and reporting on the third icon row and NACS-related Maps behavior.

There was also an important reliability update after iOS 18.4. Apple said iOS 18.4.1 fixed a rare issue that prevented wireless CarPlay connections in certain vehicles. The post-18.4 story was therefore not only about new features; it also included compatibility and connection fixes.

Why a third icon row matters

Adding one more row sounds minor, but it addresses a growing mismatch between CarPlay’s traditional interface and modern vehicle hardware. Many cars now have large, wide displays, yet a compact phone-projection layout can make those screens feel underused.

The change suggests that Apple is paying more attention to adaptive CarPlay layouts rather than treating every vehicle display as the same size. Apple’s developer materials describe support for dynamic screen sizing, multitouch, wireless connectivity and route guidance in instrument clusters or head-up displays. Those capabilities point toward a platform designed to scale across increasingly varied vehicle interiors.

There are limits. A software update cannot overcome every restriction imposed by the vehicle’s screen dimensions, firmware, touch interface or CarPlay implementation. A physically large display does not guarantee three rows, and a vehicle firmware update may be needed before the newest behavior appears.

Why EV routing may be the more important improvement

For EV drivers, navigation is not just about finding a destination. It must account for battery state, vehicle range, charging stops, connector type, network availability and, increasingly, adapters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NACS complicates that calculation. A vehicle may be able to use a particular charger only with an approved adapter, and the software must distinguish between:

  • the connector standard used by the vehicle or charger;
  • the physical adapter required;
  • the charging network’s availability and access rules; and
  • whether the automaker, region and vehicle configuration support the necessary data.

Apple Maps EV routing can plan charging stops, monitor changes in charge and provide charging information for selected vehicles, regions and providers. Apple’s EV-routing documentation makes clear that availability is limited. Some vehicles need the manufacturer’s official app to provide battery or charging information to the iPhone.

That makes the NACS-related behavior a sign of more vehicle-aware navigation, not proof that every EV can use every NACS-equipped station. Charging availability can also change after a route is planned, and adapter compatibility or automaker approval may vary.

Is Apple returning its attention to conventional CarPlay?

The evidence supports a cautious “possibly,” not a confirmed strategy announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evidence for renewed attention

  • Large-screen adaptation: the third-row behavior makes existing CarPlay installations more suitable for modern displays.
  • More EV context: adapter messaging and charging-aware routing address a real limitation of phone projection in electric vehicles.
  • A broader app platform: Apple supports compatible CarPlay apps for navigation, audio, messaging, EV charging, fueling, parking, food ordering, driving tasks and voice-based conversational experiences.
  • Developer investment: Apple’s CarPlay documentation covers dynamic sizing, instrument-cluster guidance and deeper vehicle interfaces.

These are signs of incremental platform development. They indicate that Apple can improve the installed base of conventional CarPlay without waiting for an entirely new vehicle architecture.

Why iOS 18.4 was not a major CarPlay upgrade

The update did not introduce a new home-screen design, universal large-display support or a broad replacement for the vehicle’s infotainment system. Apple’s official notes barely highlighted CarPlay, and the reported changes depended substantially on vehicle hardware and integration.

It would therefore be wrong to describe iOS 18.4 as “CarPlay 2.” The strongest claim is that Apple showed renewed attention to practical problems affecting existing users.

CarPlay Ultra changes the bigger picture

Apple’s later launch of CarPlay Ultra on May 15, 2025 made the two-track interpretation more credible. Conventional CarPlay remains primarily a projection layer for iPhone apps and services. CarPlay Ultra is designed to extend across the driver’s displays and into vehicle functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple says CarPlay Ultra can provide:

  • instrument-cluster information and vehicle gauges;
  • widgets and vehicle-specific information;
  • climate and radio controls;
  • access to vehicle settings and other functions; and
  • control through touchscreens, physical buttons or Siri.

The initial rollout began with Aston Martin in the United States and Canada. It required an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. Apple also named Hyundai, Kia and Genesis among automakers working toward support, but availability is not universal and should not be assumed for every model, trim or region. Details are in Apple’s CarPlay Ultra announcement.

CarPlay Ultra does not make conventional CarPlay obsolete. It represents a deeper, more ambitious path that requires automaker cooperation. That makes it more capable, but also less widely available and more dependent on vehicle-specific implementation.

CarPlay versus the car’s built-in system

Conventional CarPlay remains attractive because it offers a familiar iPhone-centered interface across compatible vehicles, with Apple Maps, Siri, music, messaging and supported third-party apps. It can reduce dependence on an automaker’s own software design.

CarPlay Ultra narrows that gap, but only where the automaker supplies the necessary integration. It is not something an ordinary wireless adapter can add to an existing car.

What EV and CarPlay owners should do

Check for the large-screen layout

  1. Update the iPhone to the relevant iOS version.
  2. Connect the phone to CarPlay.
  3. Open the CarPlay Home screen.
  4. Check whether the display automatically shows three rows of icons.
  5. If it does not, check the vehicle manufacturer’s firmware-update information and confirm whether the exact model and infotainment system support the behavior.

Do not expect a hidden iPhone switch to activate the third row. If the vehicle does not expose the required display capability, the update cannot guarantee it.

Set up EV routing

  1. Connect the iPhone to CarPlay.
  2. Open Apple Maps and request driving directions.
  3. Tap Connect above the route list if that option appears.
  4. Follow the setup instructions.
  5. Install and configure the automaker’s official app if required.
  6. Verify the vehicle, battery information, connector type and preferred charging network.

If Connect does not appear, the car, region or manufacturer integration may not be supported. Check the owner’s manual and Apple’s support documentation, then use the automaker’s navigation system or a compatible third-party EV-routing app as a fallback. For a long journey, verify critical charging stops with a second source rather than relying blindly on one route planner.

Wireless CarPlay is convenient, but wired CarPlay can be more dependable in some vehicles. If wireless connections are unreliable, update the vehicle and iPhone software, retry with a wired connection and check the vehicle’s support information. iOS 18.4.1 addressed a rare wireless-connection problem in certain cars, but it cannot fix every automaker-specific issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What this means for third-party apps

CarPlay does not display every app installed on an iPhone. Apps must use Apple’s CarPlay frameworks, fit supported categories and comply with vehicle and regional restrictions. Apple’s developer documentation describes the available categories and integration model.

Compatible navigation apps can appear in CarPlay, but Dashboard behavior depends on whether an app is actively being used and whether it properly supports CarPlay. Apple’s iPhone user guide provides further information about compatible apps and Dashboard behavior.

Should CarPlay influence your next vehicle purchase?

Yes, but “supports CarPlay” is no longer a sufficient check. Before buying, verify:

  • the exact model year, trim and region;
  • wired versus wireless CarPlay;
  • screen layout and display behavior;
  • EV-routing support and manufacturer-app requirements;
  • whether the vehicle supports conventional CarPlay or CarPlay Ultra; and
  • which vehicle controls and displays are actually integrated.

Use Apple’s CarPlay-compatible vehicle directory, but confirm details with the automaker. Model-year, trim and infotainment-package differences can matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Owners of older cars without CarPlay can consider an aftermarket receiver from brands such as Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony or JVC. Evaluate wireless versus wired operation, backup-camera and steering-wheel-control support, screen proportions, installation complexity and firmware support. An aftermarket receiver may add conventional CarPlay, but it will not create CarPlay Ultra-level instrument-cluster integration.

Similarly, a wireless CarPlay adapter can add convenience to a wired-CarPlay vehicle, but it will not improve the screen layout, add EV battery integration or turn the system into CarPlay Ultra. Added latency, pairing failures and adapter-firmware issues are possible.

The verdict

iOS 18.4 did not prove that Apple had abandoned its next-generation plans or launched a new CarPlay generation. It did something subtler: it showed that Apple could still make useful, software-led improvements to the conventional CarPlay systems already installed in millions of vehicles.

The later arrival of CarPlay Ultra suggests a two-track strategy. Apple can continue refining display scaling, EV context, app support and reliability for existing users while pursuing deeper integration with automakers that are willing to support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is the promising trend—not one dramatic feature, but a gradual move toward CarPlay that adapts better to large screens, understands more about electric vehicles and can eventually reach beyond the center display. The practical limitation remains the same: the quality of the experience depends as much on the car, its software and its region as it does on the iPhone.
