Apple lists more than 800 vehicle models that support CarPlay, but only a subset also supports Apple Wallet car keys. These are separate capabilities: CarPlay puts iPhone features on the vehicle’s screen, while a digital car key can let you unlock or start a compatible vehicle with an iPhone or Apple Watch.
Use Apple’s official available-models list as your starting point, then verify the exact model year, trim, infotainment system, market and software with the automaker. A model name alone is not enough.

The short answer: CarPlay and car key are not the same thing
| Feature | What it does | Does it imply the other? |
|---|---|---|
| CarPlay | Displays supported iPhone functions—including navigation, calls, messages, music and Siri controls—on the vehicle’s infotainment screen. | No. CarPlay does not mean the vehicle supports Apple Wallet car keys. |
| Wireless CarPlay | Connects CarPlay without a cable, using compatible vehicle hardware. | No. A car may support wired CarPlay only, wireless CarPlay only in certain configurations, or both. |
| Apple Wallet car key | Can use an eligible iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock, lock or start a compatible vehicle. | No. It requires separate vehicle hardware, software and automaker support. |
| CarPlay Ultra | A more deeply integrated CarPlay experience that can extend across vehicle displays, including the instrument cluster. | No. Standard CarPlay compatibility does not automatically provide CarPlay Ultra. |
Bluetooth support by itself also does not mean a vehicle supports CarPlay. CarPlay depends on the vehicle’s compatible infotainment hardware and may require either a USB connection or wireless pairing.
Apple’s official CarPlay compatibility list
Apple’s list is organized by automaker and model-year ranges. Open the Available Models page, search for the manufacturer with your browser’s Find command, and then match the exact model and year.

- Find the automaker.
- Match the exact model name.
- Check the model-year range Apple shows.
- Look for Apple’s separate “Supports car keys” indicator.
- Confirm the result with the automaker using the VIN, build sheet, trim information or owner’s manual.
- Check that the specification is sold in your country or region.
Apple’s page is a compatibility index, not a build sheet. Equipment can vary by trim, production date, regional specification, optional technology package, factory infotainment system and software release. Overlapping or duplicate model-year entries should not be treated as a guarantee that every vehicle in a model family has identical equipment.
Examples on Apple’s list
Apple’s current list includes vehicles from manufacturers such as BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Lexus, Lotus and RAM. Examples include BMW’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Series, X1 through X7, i4, i5, i7 and iX; Hyundai’s Sonata, Tucson, Elantra, Kona, Santa Fe, Palisade, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and listed 2026 Ioniq 9; Kia’s Soul, Niro, Sorento, Sportage, Telluride, K5, Carnival and EV6; and RAM 1500, 2500 and 3500 entries from the listed model years.
Other listed manufacturers include Genesis, Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Porsche and Polestar. The important qualification is that a brand-level match is not sufficient: verify the particular car you are buying, leasing, renting or already driving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCars marked as supporting Apple car keys
Apple’s CarPlay page includes a “Supports car keys” label, but the presence of a vehicle on the page does not mean that every listed vehicle supports Apple Wallet car keys. Treat the label as a separate signal and confirm eligibility through the manufacturer.
The automaker may limit car-key support to a newer model year, particular trim, connected-services package, software version, phone generation or geographic market. It may also require its official app and an ownership-verification process.

Before relying on a digital key, confirm:
- Whether Apple Wallet car key—not merely the automaker’s own digital-key app—is supported.
- Which model year, trim and factory hardware are eligible.
- Whether the feature is available in your country.
- Whether an automaker account or connected-services subscription is required.
- Whether the key can be shared with other drivers.
- Whether the vehicle supports NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy, ultra-wideband or another required technology.
- What happens if the iPhone battery is depleted.
- Whether a physical key remains available as a backup.
Apple describes digital car keys as a way to unlock and start compatible vehicles with an iPhone or Apple Watch. The exact functions—such as passive entry, remote locking, shared keys or power-reserve operation—depend on the vehicle and automaker implementation. Apple’s CarKey documentation explains that automaker apps communicate with vehicles already provisioned to the user.
What to check before buying a new or used car
- Model year: Do not rely on the model name alone. A hardware change can make one year compatible and another year different.
- Trim: Confirm whether CarPlay and the digital key are standard, optional or unavailable on the exact trim.
- Infotainment system: Identify the factory head unit, not just the size of the screen.
- Connection type: Verify wired versus wireless CarPlay separately.
- Region: Imported vehicles and fleet specifications may use different equipment or software.
- Software: Ask whether the infotainment system and vehicle firmware are current.
- Key eligibility: Check the automaker’s digital-key eligibility tool or app rather than assuming that CarPlay support includes a key.
- Ownership transfer: For a used car, confirm that the previous owner’s digital key and account have been removed and that connected services can be transferred.
Used cars
Request the VIN and ask the dealer or manufacturer for written confirmation. Inspect the infotainment menus and test CarPlay with your own iPhone before purchase. If Apple Wallet car key matters, try to add the key—or have the seller demonstrate confirmed eligibility—before completing the transaction.
Rental and fleet vehicles
A rental may support CarPlay but restrict wireless pairing, require manual authorization or provide only a charge-only USB port. Digital keys are less predictable because provisioning may require an owner account and vehicle verification. Fleet vehicles can also omit the technology package found on retail versions of the same model.
How to connect CarPlay
Apple recommends current iOS and current vehicle software. Consult the vehicle manual for model-specific instructions.
Wired CarPlay
- Turn on the vehicle.
- Make sure Siri is enabled on the iPhone.
- Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port.
- Unlock the iPhone and accept any prompts on the phone or vehicle display.
Some USB ports provide charging only. If CarPlay does not start, try the port marked for smartphone or CarPlay connectivity.

Wireless CarPlay
- Turn on the vehicle and place it in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode.
- If required, press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay > Available Cars.
- Select the vehicle and follow the prompts on both screens.
Wireless CarPlay requires compatible vehicle hardware. A vehicle with wired CarPlay is not automatically upgradeable to wireless CarPlay without an appropriate receiver or adapter.
How to add an Apple Wallet car key
There is no single setup path for every automaker. The general process is:
- Install or open the automaker’s official app.
- Sign in to the account associated with the vehicle.
- Complete ownership or vehicle-eligibility verification.
- Follow the app’s instructions to add the key to Apple Wallet.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode.
- Test the key while carrying the iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Set up shared keys if the vehicle supports them.
If Wallet does not offer the key, the vehicle may be the wrong year or trim, the account may be incorrect, ownership verification may be incomplete, the device or vehicle software may be outdated, or the feature may not yet be available in your region. A previous owner’s account can also interfere with setup.
When CarPlay does not appear
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that Apple lists the exact vehicle and model year.
- Verify the trim and factory infotainment system.
- Use the correct USB port and try another cable.
- Unlock the iPhone and accept connection prompts.
- Make sure Siri is enabled.
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and confirm that CarPlay is allowed.
- In Settings > General > CarPlay, forget the vehicle and pair it again.
- Restart the iPhone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- Install available iOS and vehicle-firmware updates.
- Check the owner’s manual for the vehicle’s pairing procedure.
- Disconnect another phone that may already be connected or prioritized.
Apple’s CarPlay support guidance specifically recommends checking the cable, USB port, iPhone software and vehicle stereo firmware.
Why a listed model may lack CarPlay
The Apple entry may apply to a different trim, regional infotainment system or production period. The feature may have been optional, require a software update, or be unavailable through the particular USB port you are using.

Why CarPlay works but the car key does not
CarPlay and Apple Wallet car key use different vehicle capabilities. The car may lack digital-key hardware, the manufacturer may support only its own app, or Apple Wallet support may be restricted by model year, trim, software or market.
Why wireless CarPlay disconnects
Interference, multiple paired phones, outdated vehicle firmware, a vehicle-specific infotainment fault or an aftermarket receiver’s firmware can all contribute. Re-pairing may help, but no cable or app can guarantee a fix for every vehicle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the vehicle is not compatible?
An aftermarket receiver can add CarPlay to some older vehicles. Apple’s CarPlay page names aftermarket manufacturers including Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony. Start with the manufacturer’s compatibility information or a vehicle-specific installer such as Crutchfield.
Before buying, check the total installation—not just the receiver. A suitable installation may require a dash kit, wiring interface, steering-wheel-control adapter, backup-camera adapter or amplifier interface. Confirm that removing the factory head unit will not disable climate controls, drive-mode settings, vehicle menus or safety functions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose wired or wireless CarPlay deliberately. Wired receivers can be simpler; wireless models are more convenient but require attention to firmware and connection stability. Large-screen units may improve visibility but can create dashboard-fit and control trade-offs.

An aftermarket receiver normally cannot add Apple Wallet car keys. Digital keys require the vehicle hardware, automaker provisioning and account support, not merely a CarPlay-capable display. Nor is an ordinary aftermarket receiver equivalent to CarPlay Ultra, which is designed for deeper integration with the vehicle’s displays and built-in systems.
CarPlay, EVs and CarPlay Ultra
CarPlay compatibility does not automatically provide battery status, charging controls or route planning inside CarPlay. Apple’s developer material describes EnergyKit as an automaker-app capability for electric vehicles, not as an automatic result of ordinary CarPlay support.
CarPlay Ultra is also distinct from standard CarPlay. Apple describes it as a more integrated experience that can extend across displays such as the instrument cluster, while vehicle driving functions remain powered by the built-in system. A standard CarPlay vehicle is not automatically a CarPlay Ultra vehicle; check current automaker availability rather than relying on announcements or planned support.
