CarPlay Ultra is Apple’s expanded in-car interface, not a new wireless adapter or a cosmetic update to ordinary CarPlay. It can use the center display, instrument cluster, and other driver-facing screens, while also exposing selected vehicle controls such as climate, radio, driving modes, and camera views.
The rollout began on May 15, 2025, with Aston Martin in the United States and Canada. Availability remains limited: Aston Martin is the only automaker with confirmed production CarPlay Ultra vehicles, while Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have been named as future partners without firm public model lists or launch dates.

What is CarPlay Ultra?
CarPlay Ultra is Apple’s name for the production version of the “next generation of CarPlay” previewed in 2022. Regular CarPlay primarily mirrors supported iPhone apps on the vehicle’s infotainment screen. Ultra is designed to become a broader interface across the car.

It combines iPhone-powered information—such as Apple Maps, music, messages, widgets, and supported third-party apps—with vehicle information including speed, RPM, fuel level, temperature, tire pressure, and some driver-assistance information.
The important qualification is that every feature depends on the automaker’s implementation. CarPlay Ultra is not identical in every car, and Apple’s regular CarPlay compatibility list does not indicate Ultra support.
CarPlay Ultra features
Instrument-cluster integration
The most visible difference is the ability to put navigation and other information behind the steering wheel. A vehicle can display Apple Maps guidance alongside gauges or use a manufacturer-designed cluster layout.
Aston Martin offers themes including traditional twin dials and a “Power Bar” design. It also provides options involving colors, textures, patterns, gradients, landscapes, and topographical graphics. Available layouts and gauges vary by model.

Aston Martin’s implementation includes heating and ventilation, 3D camera views, advanced parking systems, dynamic vehicle configurations, and selected active-safety controls. The touchscreen is not the only input method: supported functions may also be operated with physical controls or Siri.
Ultra does not replace the vehicle’s underlying safety-critical systems. The car continues to run its own core driving and safety functions; CarPlay Ultra presents or controls only the functions the manufacturer has chosen to expose.

CarPlay Ultra supports iPhone-powered widgets on compatible displays. Depending on the vehicle and app, these can show items such as weather, calendar information, trip data, fuel economy, or other glanceable details.
Aston Martin specifically lists widgets for trip duration, fuel economy, calendar events, and weather. Third-party app support still follows normal CarPlay rules, so an app must support CarPlay and may have regional or feature restrictions. Spotify and WhatsApp are examples of third-party apps Aston Martin says are retained in its implementation.
Automaker-specific design
Apple is not imposing one universal dashboard design. Manufacturers can create their own themes and layouts, giving an Aston Martin a different appearance from a future Hyundai, Kia, or Genesis vehicle. Drivers can then customize supported colors, wallpapers, textures, patterns, gauge designs, and widgets.

Which cars support CarPlay Ultra?
Do not confuse Apple’s long list of regular CarPlay-compatible vehicles with a CarPlay Ultra list. Ultra requires integration with the car’s displays, instrument cluster, vehicle data, and control systems. A car that supports ordinary wireless or wired CarPlay cannot gain Ultra simply because it has a compatible USB port.

Aston Martin’s announced range includes vehicles such as the DBX707 and DB12 family, but support remains subject to the specific model, market, model year, and equipment level. Treat the manufacturer’s current vehicle configurator and dealer confirmation as the final authority.
What iPhone does CarPlay Ultra require?
Apple’s launch requirements are:
- iPhone 12 or later
- iOS 18.5 or later at launch
- An active network connection during setup
- The iPhone present in the vehicle for the system to operate
CarPlay Ultra is completely wireless. It is not a standalone operating system stored in the car, so it does not continue as a full Ultra experience when the paired iPhone is absent.
How to set up CarPlay Ultra
- Put the car into wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode. In some vehicles, you can instead press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay.
- Tap Available Cars.
- Select the vehicle from the list.
- Keep the iPhone connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network while setup completes. Ultra may need to download additional assets.
There is no single Apple menu for changing every Ultra gauge, theme, or vehicle control. Those options are implemented by the automaker, so the menu names and locations differ between vehicles.
Can an existing car be upgraded?
Sometimes, but only when the vehicle already has the necessary infotainment and display architecture. Apple said existing Aston Martin vehicles equipped with the company’s next-generation infotainment system could receive CarPlay Ultra through a software update performed by a local dealer.

That announcement does not mean every older Aston Martin is eligible. Compatibility depends on the installed hardware and software, and the dealer must verify the vehicle’s VIN and market specification.
For most cars, a wireless CarPlay dongle, iPhone app, USB adapter, or aftermarket head unit will not add CarPlay Ultra. Those products can add or improve ordinary CarPlay, but Ultra needs automaker-level access to the instrument cluster, vehicle data, cameras, climate functions, and other controls.

The phone connects, but only regular CarPlay appears
Pairing confirms that wireless CarPlay works; it does not confirm that the vehicle supports Ultra. Check the exact model, trim, market, and model year. An eligible Aston Martin may also need the dealer-installed software update.
Setup stops or fails
Give the iPhone an active cellular or Wi-Fi connection and repeat the setup. Ultra may need to download data that ordinary CarPlay pairing does not require. Also confirm that the iPhone is running a supported iOS version.
The Ultra interface does not appear when starting the car
Apple says Ultra appears automatically when the vehicle displays turn on, provided the driver’s iPhone is present. Check that the intended iPhone is in the vehicle, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled, and the vehicle has not connected to a different driver’s phone.

A car appears on Apple’s CarPlay list but has no Ultra
This is expected if the list is referring to regular CarPlay. Use the automaker’s documentation for Ultra confirmation rather than Apple’s general CarPlay model list.
What to check before buying
- Ask whether the exact vehicle supports CarPlay Ultra, not merely Apple CarPlay.
- Verify the model year, trim, market, and production date.
- Confirm whether the feature is standard, optional, or dependent on a software update.
- Ask which displays and vehicle controls are integrated.
- Confirm that the vehicle supports the iPhone model and software version you intend to use.
- Test the system in the actual car if instrument-cluster navigation and climate controls matter to you.
Be cautious with lists that include every automaker linked to Apple’s 2022 announcement. A planned partnership is not the same as a production vehicle. Until the automaker identifies a specific vehicle that customers can buy and use, describe the support as planned rather than available.
FAQ
Is CarPlay Ultra available in any car with regular CarPlay?
No. Regular CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra are separate. Ultra requires the automaker to integrate Apple’s system with the vehicle’s instrument cluster, displays, vehicle data, and controls.

Does CarPlay Ultra work without an iPhone?

CarPlay Ultra is a major expansion of CarPlay, with instrument-cluster graphics, widgets, Maps guidance, and selected vehicle controls in one interface. Its capabilities are impressive, but availability is still narrow. Aston Martin is the only confirmed production partner at present; Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are committed but have not published firm vehicle details. If you are shopping for it, verify the exact model and equipment with the automaker—an ordinary CarPlay logo or an aftermarket adapter is not proof of Ultra support.
