Build a High-Performance Electric Vehicle in a Week

A prepared electric-vehicle kit can be assembled in a week. Building a safe, high-performance, road-legal EV from scratch cannot. Here is what the Switch Lab project actually proves.

A functioning electric vehicle can be assembled in a week—but only if the difficult engineering and fabrication work has already been done. That is what happened at a 2015 Switch Lab EV training event, where 12 teachers assembled two three-wheeled electric vehicles in one week.

That achievement is often shortened to “build a high-performance EV in a week.” The more accurate description is assembling and commissioning a prepared educational vehicle platform. Designing a safe high-voltage system, fabricating a chassis, integrating the battery management system, validating the brakes, and registering a road vehicle are not realistic seven-day tasks for a first-time builder.

What the one-week EV build actually involved

The Switch Lab EV was supplied as a modular platform rather than a pile of raw materials. Its chassis was laser-cut and welded before delivery, the wiring was professionally labeled and terminated, and the major electrical components were selected to work together. Participants still had meaningful work to do: mechanical assembly, electrical connections, controller and BMS configuration, troubleshooting, testing, and driving.

That distinction matters. A prepared kit removes the tasks most likely to consume weeks or months—or create serious safety problems. It also lets a school or workshop teach EV architecture without asking students to design a battery pack, weld a structural frame, or debug an unprotected high-voltage system from scratch.

What a realistic seven-day schedule looks like

A compressed build is possible when the vehicle, parts, tools, documentation, instructors, and work area are ready before day one. A practical schedule would look something like this:

Day Typical work What must already be complete
1 Safety briefing, vehicle inspection, chassis and suspension assembly Chassis fabrication, component selection, and shipping
2 Motor, drivetrain, steering, brakes, and mechanical hardware Correct brackets, fasteners, and installation instructions
3 Battery installation, power wiring, disconnects, and low-voltage circuits Battery modules, terminated harnesses, safety equipment, and wiring diagrams
4 Controller, display, BMS, charger, and configuration software Compatible firmware, laptops, software access, and manufacturer support
5 Static checks, fault diagnosis, brake tests, and controlled driving A suitable test area and an instructor-approved commissioning procedure
6–7 Contingency work, calibration, documentation, and demonstrations Time reserved for faults rather than assuming every connection works first time

The current Switch Vehicles program is less absolute about the timeline than the original headline. Its FAQ describes delivery in a partially assembled “glider” format and says the work can fit either a two-week intensive program or a semester-length course. Its listed workshop uses five days of morning lectures and afternoon construction.

Current Switch Lab EV configurations

The current platform is offered in at least two substantially different configurations. They should not be confused with every specification reported in older coverage.

Why “high-performance” needs qualification

Older descriptions of the Switch platform cited options such as 10–30 kWh battery packs, 45–135 miles of range, speeds above 100 mph, and a nine-second 0–60-mph time. Those figures belong to historical coverage and should not be presented as current specifications for every Switch Lab EV.

The current published configurations are primarily educational platforms. Their value is not simply acceleration. They demonstrate how the battery, motor, inverter or controller, charging hardware, display, braking system, and BMS interact in a working vehicle.

A high-performance EV also needs more than a powerful motor. Battery current capability, thermal management, tire load rating, suspension geometry, braking performance, chassis rigidity, crash protection, and software fault handling all have to match the intended output. Increasing voltage or controller current without validating those systems can turn a quick build into an unsafe one.

The safety work that cannot be compressed away

A 72- or 96-volt traction system can deliver dangerous energy even when the nominal voltage looks modest beside a modern car’s battery pack. The current PM/96v materials identify several essential safeguards:

  • High-voltage procedures and warning labels
  • Manual or emergency battery disconnect
  • Insulated tools and suitable high-voltage personal protective equipment
  • Protected or enclosed electrical components
  • A steel roll cage
  • Dual braking systems

These are not optional finishing touches. Before applying drive power, a build team should verify polarity, insulation, connector engagement, fuse and disconnect operation, BMS behavior, controller settings, throttle plausibility, brake operation, steering travel, wheel clearance, and charger operation. Initial tests should use a controlled area, low speed, and an instructor or qualified technician who can stop the system safely.

There is also an apparent inconsistency in the manufacturer’s web copy: the FAQ describes an emergency disconnect that reduces a 96-volt system to 48 volts by splitting the pack, while the DC/72v page repeats that 96-to-48-volt description. The DC/72v disconnect arrangement should therefore be confirmed directly with Switch Vehicles rather than inferred from the website.

What the project costs

The 2015 article estimated a complete kit at $14,000–$30,000, but Switch Vehicles’ current product pages direct buyers to request a quote rather than publish a comparable consumer kit price. A current budget must therefore include more than the vehicle itself:

Road legality is a separate project

Assembly completion does not automatically make the vehicle legal for public roads. The Switch FAQ says the vehicle may be classified as a motorcycle in many regions and tells schools to verify local regulations. Requirements can cover:

  • Vehicle classification and title
  • VIN or manufacturer documentation
  • Lighting, mirrors, reflectors, and signaling equipment
  • Brake and tire requirements
  • Driver licensing and helmet rules
  • Insurance and safety inspection
  • Permitted roads and operating restrictions

Rules vary by state and can change based on the vehicle’s number of wheels, seats, speed capability, and equipment. Historic claims that no helmet or motorcycle license is required should not be generalized. Confirm the rules with the relevant motor-vehicle authority before planning road use.

Could an individual do it in a week?

An experienced mechanic working from a complete, proven kit might physically assemble the platform in an intensive week. That does not mean the vehicle should be driven on public roads at the end of day seven. Commissioning, fault-finding, brake and handling tests, battery validation, documentation, and registration deserve their own time.

For a school, the sensible target is a supervised rolling vehicle and a documented learning outcome—not a promise of a finished high-performance road car. For a private builder, a two-week or semester schedule is more credible, especially if the project includes custom bodywork, different batteries, altered suspension, or a new controller calibration.

FAQ

Can you really build an electric vehicle in seven days?

You can assemble a supplied, partially completed EV in seven days with trained people, prepared components, professional wiring, tools, and instructor support. Designing and building a safe, high-performance, road-legal EV from raw materials in seven days is not a realistic claim.

What is the current range of the Switch Lab EV?

Switch Vehicles currently lists 20 miles for the DC/72v model and up to 50 miles for the PM/96v model. Older articles cite different battery and range options, so those historic numbers should not be treated as current specifications.

Is the Switch Lab EV street legal?

The manufacturer describes the platform as street legal in most states, not all states. Classification, inspection, registration, licensing, helmet, equipment, insurance, and road-use rules must be checked in the specific jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should beginners know before working on a 72- or 96-volt EV?

They need formal high-voltage safety procedures, appropriate insulated tools and protective equipment, a functioning disconnect, correct battery and controller configuration, and qualified supervision. A nominal voltage figure does not indicate how much dangerous current the battery can deliver.

The Bottom Line

The Switch Lab demonstrated a useful and repeatable idea: a trained group can assemble a working electric vehicle in a week when the chassis, wiring, components, documentation, and safety systems are prepared in advance. It did not demonstrate that someone can engineer a high-performance, road-legal EV from scratch in seven days. Treat the project as a structured assembly and commissioning program, allow extra time for testing and compliance, and verify every current specification and local road rule before driving it outside a controlled site.
