iOS 18.4, released on March 31, 2025, added three notable CarPlay-related changes: some vehicles with larger displays can show a third row of app icons, developers can build more capable sports experiences for CarPlay, and users in the European Union can choose a default navigation app other than Apple Maps.
These are useful improvements to existing CarPlay—not the arrival of next-generation CarPlay or CarPlay Ultra. What you actually see depends on your iPhone, vehicle or head unit, screen layout, region, and whether individual apps have implemented the relevant features.

The three iOS 18.4 CarPlay changes at a glance

The first change is immediately visible to some drivers. The other two are more conditional: sports support depends on app developers, while default-navigation selection is limited geographically and technically.

Before iOS 18.4, the CarPlay Home Screen generally displayed two rows of app icons. On sufficiently large central displays, iOS 18.4 can render a third row. That gives drivers access to more apps without swiping to another page.

Reports observed the extra row on large screens including those found in some Ford F-150 Lightning and Toyota Tundra configurations. Smaller displays continued to show two rows. The update is therefore best understood as a better use of available screen space—not a universal change to every CarPlay installation.
Is there a specific screen-size cutoff?
Apple has not publicly specified a universal diagonal-size threshold that guarantees the third row. A vehicle’s screen dimensions are not the only relevant factor; the infotainment system’s CarPlay layout and available display area also matter.
In other words, do not assume that any screen above a particular number of inches will receive three rows. The reliable test is the vehicle itself:
- Update the iPhone to iOS 18.4 or later.
- Connect it to the vehicle’s CarPlay system.
- Open the CarPlay Home Screen.
- Check whether three rows of icons appear.
If only two rows appear, that does not necessarily indicate a failed update. The vehicle’s display or CarPlay implementation may simply not support the denser layout.
What this feature does—and does not—do
- It does: put more CarPlay app icons on the main screen and reduce the number of swipes needed to reach them.
- It does not: add a third row to every vehicle, change the physical dimensions of the display, or turn a non-CarPlay infotainment system into a CarPlay system.
2. Sports apps can build richer CarPlay experiences
iOS 18.4 also expanded the opportunity for sports-related CarPlay experiences. Apple’s CarPlay framework includes sports-specific interfaces such as CPNowPlayingModeSports, along with support for sports teams, event status, clocks, and sports overlays.

These interfaces are intended for sports content involving two teams, whether the event is live or recorded. In practical terms, a compatible sports app could use CarPlay to present information such as the teams involved, game state, timing, or other event details in a format designed for the vehicle screen.
Why you may not see a sports app in CarPlay yet
An API is a set of tools for developers; it is not an automatic guarantee that every sports application will appear in CarPlay. Each app must implement Apple’s supported interfaces, meet the applicable CarPlay requirements and entitlements, and ship an update that enables the feature.

That means iOS 18.4 does not guarantee CarPlay support for Apple Sports, ESPN, Yahoo Sports, or any other named service. Availability can also vary by country, app version, subscription or service coverage, and the type of content the developer chooses to support.
If you want sports information in CarPlay, check the specific app’s current release notes, product documentation, or CarPlay listing. Do not treat the existence of Apple’s sports APIs as proof that a particular app already supports them.
What sports support is useful for
The feature is potentially useful for drivers who want glanceable sports information while keeping the experience within CarPlay’s vehicle-oriented interface. It is not a promise that CarPlay will show every live score, stream every game, or make arbitrary sports websites available on the dashboard.

As with other CarPlay categories, Apple’s framework and the vehicle system constrain what an app can display. The app developer determines whether and how it adopts the sports functionality.
3. EU users can choose a default navigation app
In the European Union, iOS and iPadOS 18.4 and later allow users to select a supported app other than Apple Maps as the default navigation app. This is one of the default-app controls Apple introduced for the region.
The change concerns the iPhone’s default navigation provider: when the operating system or another app sends a navigation request, a qualifying alternative can handle it instead of Apple Maps.
How to look for the setting
On an EU iPhone running iOS 18.4 or later, look under Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Navigation. Apple’s labels and the available controls can vary by software version and region. If the option is not present, check that the iPhone is updated, that it is being used in an eligible region, and that a qualifying navigation app is installed.
The selected app must satisfy Apple’s technical requirements, including the appropriate navigation entitlement and URL scheme. Installing a popular navigation app does not by itself guarantee that it can be selected as the default.

What this means for CarPlay
Choosing a default navigation app can affect how navigation requests from the iPhone are handled, but it is not the same as a worldwide CarPlay setting. It also does not prove that every third-party navigation app works in every vehicle or CarPlay configuration.
EU users should confirm three separate things:
- The app is available in their country and supports the required default-navigation functionality.
- The app appears as an option under the iPhone’s Default Apps controls.
- The app’s current CarPlay implementation supports the navigation experience they want to use.
Users in the United States and other regions should not expect this iOS 18.4 control to appear. The change described here is geographically limited to the European Union.

CarPlay is a combination of iPhone software, the vehicle or aftermarket head unit, the display layout, the connection method, and app support. iOS 18.4 cannot overcome hardware or vehicle-integration limits.

Optional connection accessories
None of these iOS 18.4 features requires a wireless adapter. If a vehicle already supports factory-wired CarPlay, a wireless CarPlay adapter may be a convenience option for connecting without a cable, provided the adapter and vehicle are compatible. Verify factory-wired CarPlay compatibility before buying: an adapter does not add CarPlay to a vehicle that lacks it, and it does not unlock the third icon row, sports APIs, or EU default-navigation controls.
Likewise, a USB cable may be necessary for a wired connection, but the correct connector type and cable quality depend on the iPhone and vehicle ports. The cable is a connection accessory, not an iOS 18.4 feature.

What iOS 18.4 did not add
The update should not be described as the full next-generation CarPlay experience. The evidence supports three incremental improvements to the existing platform, not a universal rollout of:
- CarPlay Ultra or next-generation CarPlay in every vehicle;
- a third Home Screen row on every CarPlay display;
- Apple Sports on every CarPlay system;
- every sports score, stream, or sports app inside CarPlay;
- third-party default navigation apps for users worldwide.
The most visible benefit is the extra row on compatible large displays. The sports change mainly gives developers new tools, and the default-navigation change gives EU users a new choice subject to app and platform requirements.
How to check what your setup supports
If you want the third row
- Install iOS 18.4 or a later release.
- Restart the iPhone if the update has just completed.
- Connect to CarPlay using the vehicle’s normal wired or wireless method.
- Open the Home Screen and count the icon rows.
- If there are still two rows, check the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation or accept that the display may not support the denser layout.
If you want sports content
- Update the sports app from the App Store.
- Read its current release notes or CarPlay documentation.
- Confirm that the app specifically advertises CarPlay support, rather than relying only on the existence of Apple’s sports APIs.
- Connect to CarPlay and check whether the app appears among the available CarPlay apps.
If you are in the EU and want to replace Apple Maps
- Update to iOS 18.4 or later.
- Install a navigation app that supports Apple’s default-navigation requirements.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Navigation, where available.
- Select the supported app.
- Test a navigation request and then verify the app’s behavior in your vehicle’s CarPlay interface.
If an app does not appear in the default-navigation list, changing CarPlay settings or using an adapter will not make it eligible. The limitation is likely regional, app-specific, or related to Apple’s requirements.
