Inspect carbon-ceramic brakes by combining the vehicle’s warning messages, changes in pedal feel or braking performance, unusual noises, the manufacturer’s service instructions, and an examination by a technician who knows that exact brake system. Do not apply a cast-iron rotor’s thickness rule or judge a carbon-ceramic disc from photographs alone. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one cross-brand crack rule, mileage interval, or numerical replacement threshold.
For normal road use, monitor the brakes and follow the owner’s manual. Treat a pad-wear warning, reduced braking performance, vibration, grinding, clattering, or persistent squeal as a reason for prompt assessment. Track driving and aggressive use require a separate inspection, bedding and brake-fluid plan because they can accelerate wear substantially.

What carbon-ceramic brakes are and why inspection is different
A carbon-ceramic rotor is a composite component, not a cast-iron disc with a ceramic coating. Brembo describes its system as a silicon-carbide-based ceramic matrix reinforced by carbon fibers. Porsche describes the construction of its Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system separately. The materials, friction surfaces, cooling design and wear specifications vary by vehicle and supplier.

That construction brings two commonly cited design benefits. Brembo says its discs weigh approximately half as much as comparable cast-iron discs. A Porsche PCCB explainer also describes roughly 50 percent lower disc weight and, depending on the vehicle, about 20 kilograms of total vehicle weight saved. The rotor-level and whole-vehicle figures are not interchangeable: the latter depends on the model and the rest of its brake hardware.

Ceramic-composite discs are also designed to tolerate repeated high-temperature braking and resist corrosion better than iron. Those are design characteristics, not permission to ignore wear. A disc that has been overheated, damaged, paired with the wrong pad, or used heavily on a circuit still needs specialist evaluation.
Why a steel-rotor test can mislead you
Cast-iron systems are often assessed with familiar visual and thickness checks. The sources for carbon-ceramic systems do not establish a universal owner-level measurement method, a cross-brand minimum thickness, or a single visual wear limit. Surface color, grooves, edge appearance and the amount of visible material can vary with design and use.
Use the exact owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s service information for your car. If those documents do not give an owner check, have a qualified workshop measure and assess the system. A technician should be familiar with carbon-ceramic discs rather than relying on a generic iron-brake checklist.
How long carbon-ceramic brakes last
There is no mileage number that applies to every carbon-ceramic brake system. The 2020 Porsche Taycan owner’s manual states: “Wear on different components of the brake system (e.g. brake pads and brake discs) depends on the driving style and the conditions of use and cannot be expressed in actual miles on the road.” That limitation applies to the decision you must make: condition and the vehicle’s specified wear limits matter more than an odometer reading.

Brembo gives an approximate road-use lifespan of around 150,000 km for its technology. That is a manufacturer estimate for its products, not a guaranteed lifespan, a service interval or a replacement threshold for another make, model or driving pattern. It should not be used to postpone an inspection when the car develops symptoms.
What changes service life
- Driving style: repeated high-energy stops, late braking and frequent hard acceleration followed by heavy braking create more heat and friction than steady road driving.
- Duty cycle: a car used for commuting has a different wear pattern from one used in mountain driving, towing or timed track sessions.
- Track use: Porsche warns that track use or aggressive driving considerably increases PCCB wear.
- Pad and disc pairing: an incorrect friction material can alter temperature, wear and braking performance.
- Weather and contamination: water, dirt and cleaning practices affect the immediate feel of a brake system even when they do not indicate permanent disc damage.
Ask the servicing specialist for the measured condition of the pads and discs and the remaining margin against the limits specified for your vehicle. If a workshop offers only a generic “good for another X miles” statement without identifying the car’s specification and use, ask how that estimate was derived.
How to inspect carbon-ceramic brakes safely
An owner can identify changes and arrange the right inspection. An owner generally cannot establish the rotor’s remaining life from a universal driveway measurement. Use this sequence for a road car, and stop at any point where the brakes do not feel normal.
- Read the vehicle-specific instructions. Find the owner’s-manual sections covering brake pads, brake discs, warning lamps, cleaning, wet-weather braking and track or high-performance use. Record any model-specific inspection interval or wear indicator.
- Check the instrument panel before driving. Note any brake-system, pad-wear or other red warning. Porsche’s Taycan manual says pads must be replaced immediately by a qualified workshop when the wear-limit warning appears.
- Assess the pedal and stopping response at low speed. In a safe area with no traffic behind, check whether the pedal is firm and the car responds as usual. A change in braking comfort or reduced performance warrants prompt professional assessment; do not perform repeated hard stops to “test” a suspected fault.
- Listen for changes. Record grinding, clattering, scraping or a persistent squeal, and note when each sound occurs. A brief squeak can be influenced by speed, braking force, temperature and humidity, so a single momentary noise does not prove disc failure. Persistent or worsening noise should still be investigated.
- Look through the wheel openings without dismantling parts. Check for obvious foreign objects, damaged shields or a visibly abnormal friction surface, but treat this as a screening step only. Lighting, wheel design and brake dust can conceal important defects.
- Do not use a cast-iron thickness rule. Do not infer that a disc is safe because it looks smooth, or unsafe because it has a particular lip, color or mark. The reviewed guidance provides no universal carbon-ceramic visual test or numerical replacement limit.
- Book the correct specialist inspection. Tell the workshop the vehicle’s exact model and brake option, the symptoms, whether the car has been on track, and whether any warning appeared. Ask the technician to use the manufacturer’s limits and procedures.
Cracks, chips and impact damage
Do not drive on the assumption that a crack or chip is harmless, and do not assume that every mark requires immediate rotor replacement. The available guidance does not establish a universal owner-level rule for accepting or rejecting a crack, chip or edge defect. Carbon-ceramic construction and allowable damage vary by system.

If you see or suspect a crack, a chunk missing from the friction surface, impact damage, or a sudden change after hitting debris, avoid hard braking and arrange an inspection by a qualified specialist. Follow the workshop’s advice about whether the car can be moved and whether transport is required. A photograph can help a technician triage the issue, but it cannot replace an examination against the correct service criteria.
Symptoms that need prompt attention
| Finding | What to do |
|---|---|
| Pad-wear warning | Arrange immediate pad replacement by a qualified workshop, as directed in the Porsche Taycan manual. |
| Reduced braking performance or noticeably impaired braking comfort | Stop treating the car as normal and arrange prompt assessment. A qualified specialist should determine whether it is safe to continue. |
| Vibration or wobble through the pedal | Have the brake system assessed. The symptom indicates a problem may exist but does not identify a particular rotor failure by itself. |
| Grinding or clattering | Arrange prompt inspection and avoid unnecessary driving until the cause is known. |
| Persistent squeal | Have it checked, while remembering that short-lived squeal can also result from operating conditions such as temperature and humidity. |
Everyday maintenance for road use
Use the car maker’s maintenance schedule and cleaning instructions as the controlling guidance. Carbon-ceramic brakes do not need a special owner-invented chemical, mileage ritual or generic “ceramic” pad. Their maintenance is mainly correct inspection, compatible parts and attention to changes in operation.
After rain, standing water or a car wash
The 2020 Porsche Taycan manual warns that braking action may be delayed after heavy rain, driving through water or leaving a car wash. It instructs the driver to check the brakes, leave extra space and dry them with intermittent brake applications when doing so will not affect traffic behind. If braking comfort remains noticeably impaired, it recommends a qualified specialist workshop.

Cleaning and professional examination
After an inspection, Porsche Warwick’s August 7, 2025 dealer article recommends careful cleaning with less aggressive methods and suggests a professional examination and cleaning twice a year in its PCCB service context. That twice-yearly suggestion is dealer advice, not a universal manufacturer interval for every carbon-ceramic system.
Do not generalize a dealer’s interval to another car. Follow the vehicle maker’s products, techniques and service timing, and tell the workshop if the car has been exposed to track dust, road salt, floodwater or unusual contamination. A professional should decide whether cleaning is appropriate and whether a deposit is merely surface contamination or evidence of a deeper issue.

Track use changes both the heat load and the inspection schedule. Porsche advises owners to consult a Porsche partner about current guidance before track or aggressive use. Ferrari North America’s 2018 Track Use Guidelines state: “The brake system must be inspected thoroughly before track use.” Although that document applies to its Ferrari context, its checklist illustrates the level of preparation required for a high-stress event.

Before the event
- Have a qualified specialist inspect friction-material wear and the brake lines.
- Confirm that the pads and discs are the specified combination for the car and event.
- Ensure the friction material is properly bedded. Ferrari’s guidance warns that incorrect bedding can damage pads and, for carbon-ceramic discs, cause loss of braking performance and longevity.
- Replace brake fluid when the vehicle or event guidance calls for it. Ferrari’s document recommends a fluid change before track use because absorbed moisture lowers the fluid’s boiling point under high stress.
- Obtain the manufacturer’s current track-use limits, temperature guidance and post-session checks rather than relying on a road-car assumption.
After the event
Inspect the system again for pad wear, damage, fluid condition and changes in pedal feel. Ferrari’s 2018 guidance calls for brake-fluid replacement again after track use in its applicable context. That is not a universal interval, but it demonstrates why fluid service cannot be reduced to a fixed road-mile schedule.

Choosing replacement pads and other parts
“Ceramic” in a product name is not enough to establish compatibility. Brembo says its carbon-ceramic pads are engineered to pair with carbon-ceramic discs and the specific vehicle model. Verify the exact part number and application through the vehicle or component maker before purchase.
Do not install a generic ceramic pad simply because the rotor is a ceramic composite. Pad shape, backing plate, friction formulation, temperature range, sensor arrangement and the disc’s design all matter. A mismatched pad can compromise braking performance, bedding and component life.
When replacing pads, ask the workshop whether the discs, sensors, calipers, fluid and bedding procedure remain within the vehicle’s requirements. Keep documentation of the parts and service so a later technician can identify what was installed and how the car was used.
Carbon-ceramic versus cast-iron brakes
The right comparison is not “ceramic is always better.” It is whether the system’s characteristics suit the vehicle’s duty cycle and whether you can maintain it according to its specification.
| Comparison point | Carbon-ceramic system | Conventional cast-iron system |
|---|---|---|
| Mass | Manufacturer information describes approximately 50 percent lower disc weight than cast iron; Porsche cites around 20 kg of total vehicle saving on some models. | Heavier discs by comparison; the exact difference depends on the brake design. |
| Repeated high-temperature braking | Designed for high-temperature resistance, with performance dependent on the exact system, pad and use. | Also capable of high heat, but its behavior and cooling needs differ by design. |
| Corrosion | Ceramic-composite discs are designed to resist corrosion better than iron. | Iron discs can corrode when exposed to moisture and left unused. |
| Wear assessment | No universal owner visual test or cross-brand numerical limit is established; use model-specific criteria. | Common iron-rotor checks are not transferable to a ceramic-composite disc. |
| Road versus track use | Road life can be long, but aggressive or track use considerably increases wear and demands special preparation. | Track and road wear also vary; the applicable inspection and temperature limits remain vehicle-specific. |
| Parts compatibility | Requires pads and hardware specified for the exact disc and vehicle. | Still requires correct fitment, but a generic ceramic label does not become an acceptable substitute for either system. |
| Purchase or replacement cost | Comparable prices are not established by the available manufacturer information; obtain a vehicle-specific quotation. | Prices likewise vary by model and parts choice. |
When it is safe to drive and when to stop
Arrange a prompt inspection
- A warning appears but braking still feels normal.
- You notice persistent squeal, new vibration or a new clattering sound.
- Braking comfort is reduced, even if the car still stops.
- You suspect a chip, crack or impact mark.
- The car is being prepared for track use or repeated aggressive driving.
Do not continue normal driving without professional advice
- Braking performance is clearly reduced.
- The pedal feel changes significantly or becomes inconsistent.
- Grinding is severe or accompanied by poor stopping.
- A warning is accompanied by abnormal braking behavior.
- Visible damage appeared after an impact or debris strike.
Only a qualified technician with the vehicle’s specifications can decide whether a damaged or worn carbon-ceramic component may be driven, measured, repaired or replaced. If the manual or specialist gives a stricter instruction than this general guide, follow the stricter instruction.
Quick Recap
A practical maintenance plan
- At every drive: notice warning lights, pedal firmness, stopping response and unusual sounds.
- After unusual water exposure: follow the owner’s drying and spacing instructions and seek help if braking comfort is impaired.
- At scheduled service: request a system-specific inspection and record pad, disc and fluid findings.
- Before track use: complete the manufacturer-approved inspection, bedding and fluid preparation.
- After track use: recheck wear, damage, pedal feel and fluid requirements before returning to ordinary road use.
- Whenever symptoms change: stop using mileage estimates as a substitute for diagnosis and contact a qualified specialist.
