Car Sharing vs. Owning a Second Car: Costs and Trade-Offs

Car sharing may cost less than a second car, but the answer depends on local rates, ownership costs, trip patterns, and vehicle availability. Use a household-specific annual comparison.

Car sharing can cost less than owning a second car, but there is no reliable mileage cutoff that applies to every household. The result depends on local sharing rates, how often and how long you drive, the full cost of the car, and whether shared vehicles are available for the trips you actually make. Compare annual costs using local prices, then weigh convenience and vehicle fit.

How to compare the annual costs

Build two household-specific totals: the annual cost of keeping or buying the second car, and the annual cost of using car sharing for the same trips. Use actual trips where possible and test low, expected, and high usage rather than relying on a generic break-even number.

Second-car ownership costs

  • Depreciation: Estimate purchase price minus expected resale value over the period you expect to keep the car. For a vehicle you already own, do not count its original purchase price again; consider its current resale value and the value lost by keeping it.
  • Financing: Include interest and other finance costs. Keep the initial purchase cash separate from annualized costs.
  • Insurance, taxes, and registration: Use quotes and fees for your location and vehicle.
  • Fuel or charging: Estimate based on the trips the second car would cover.
  • Maintenance, repairs, and tires: Include expected routine and irregular costs.
  • Parking and other fixed fees: Count residential or workplace parking, permits, and any other costs that continue even when the car is unused.

The US Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists insurance, license, registration, taxes, depreciation, and finance charges among vehicle ownership costs. Its estimates assume new vehicles driven 15,000 miles a year over five years and do not cover used vehicles. Add fuel, maintenance, repairs, and parking to make a household comparison. BTS ownership-cost estimates

Car-sharing costs

  • Membership or registration: Add recurring and one-time fees that apply to your household.
  • Trip charges: Use the local provider’s actual minute, hour, day, or distance rates, including the way time and mileage are billed together.
  • Insurance exposure: Check what is included and whether a deductible or other out-of-pocket amount could apply.
  • Parking and return fees: Include charges tied to the pickup, destination, or required return area.
  • Backup transport: Allow for alternatives such as a taxi or rental if a suitable shared car is unavailable.

Tariff structures differ among providers, so compare the prices that apply to your likely trips rather than a headline rate. A Germany-focused 2025 study found that provider pricing models could materially affect the result. The study’s car-sharing and ownership model

What published cost estimates can—and cannot—tell you

Benchmarks offer context, not a household quote. The market, vehicle, usage assumptions, and calculation method determine what a figure represents.

United States: new-car ownership benchmark

AAA’s 2026 estimate puts the average annual cost to own and operate a new vehicle in the US at $12,863, or $1,071.92 per month. It models five years and 75,000 miles across seven vehicle categories and 34 top-selling models. This is not a second-car estimate, and AAA says its methodology changed in 2026, so the figure is not directly comparable with its 2025 estimate. AAA identifies depreciation as the largest cost in its analysis, reporting a weighted average annual depreciation of $4,422; depreciation varies substantially by vehicle type and purchase price. Germany: a modeled comparison, not a universal break-even point

A 2025 Germany-focused study compared private-car total cost of ownership with permanent car-sharing total cost of usage across driver profiles and vehicle segments. In its small-car case, profile F used a modeled 200 km per week: sharing averaged €507 per month versus €522 for ownership, a 3% modeled saving for sharing. At profile G’s 282.7 km per week, ownership became more economical. These are results under the study’s German market data and assumptions—not a mileage rule to apply elsewhere.

The model also found that increased residential parking charges raised ownership costs by around €26 for small and medium cars and around €36 for large cars, strengthening sharing’s modeled advantage. Those amounts reflect the study’s fee assumptions and should not be transferred to another city. Its results also varied with resale values, vehicle segment, and provider tariffs. Access can have value beyond direct expenses

A 2021 US study in Nature Sustainability estimated that people would need about $11,197 a year to give up access to a privately owned vehicle, compared with roughly $9,000 in average private-ownership costs. This is an estimate of the value people place on access, not a current car-sharing price or a measure of what your household would spend. The study on the value of private vehicle access

Use a worksheet to compare your household’s options

Write down local, dated estimates and calculate totals for low, expected, and high use. Match the same journeys in both options so that one is not being credited with trips the other would not cover.

  • Usage pattern: Count trips, distance, duration, seasonal peaks, and how often you need a car spontaneously. Price each pattern against the provider’s applicable rates.
  • Vehicle fit: Check for the vehicle type and equipment your household needs, including child-seat compatibility, cargo space, or accessibility requirements.
  • Coverage: Confirm whether pickup and drop-off locations support your destinations, including trips outside the service area.
  • Availability and effort: Consider nearby pickup points or free-floating coverage, reservation reliability, return rules, and the time needed to reach and return a vehicle.
  • Cost of uncertainty: Recalculate with different mileage and resale assumptions, and account for a backup plan if a vehicle is not available when needed.

The Germany-focused study selected economical tariff combinations; it does not establish the convenience or access costs every user will face. Availability and trip fit therefore need to be checked locally. The UK Department for Transport’s 2024 rapid evidence assessment found that studies generally suggested positive environmental and societal impacts from car clubs, while calling for a broader range of research methods. Those findings do not establish that every car club or household will achieve the same effects. UK Department for Transport car-club evidence assessment

How to make the decision

  1. List the jobs for the second car. Separate regular, predictable journeys from occasional or last-minute needs.
  2. Get local numbers. Use current ownership costs, resale estimates, parking charges, and the sharing service’s rates and terms for your area.
  3. Calculate both annual totals. Keep one-time purchase cash distinct from annual costs, and avoid counting a paid-off car’s past purchase price twice.
  4. Test a range of use. Compare low, expected, and high trip volumes, and vary uncertain inputs such as resale value and parking.
  5. Account for practical friction. Decide whether the likely cost difference is worth the time, booking uncertainty, return requirements, and limitations on vehicle choice.

The central trade-off is not just cost per mile: ownership buys ready access to a particular vehicle, while sharing replaces fixed ownership expenses with trip-based charges and dependence on local availability. The best choice is the one that fits both your household’s annual numbers and its real travel needs.
