Since then, Canoo’s principal assets have been sold to an affiliate of former CEO Anthony Aquila, the sale has survived an appeal, and former factory equipment has moved into auction channels. The remaining story is the administration of a bankruptcy estate—including lawsuits and potential settlements—not a verified effort to resume Canoo vehicle production. This account is current through the available research cutoff of August 12, 2026.

The short answer: Canoo’s automaker business ended in January 2025
The original description of Canoo as a company with an uncertain future was accurate on December 23, 2024, but it is no longer the right way to describe the company. Canoo’s future as an operating vehicle manufacturer effectively ended when it filed voluntary Chapter 7 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on January 17, 2025.

That distinction matters. Chapter 7 is a liquidation proceeding. It is not the same as Chapter 11, where a company may try to reorganize its debts, obtain financing and continue building products. Canoo’s case became a process for selling assets, handling creditor and litigation claims, and distributing any recoveries according to bankruptcy priorities.
Current status: There is no verified Canoo production restart, active factory operation or continuing vehicle-delivery program established by the available court and company records. The unresolved issues concern asset sales, litigation and estate administration.
How Canoo reached the bankruptcy filing
The warning signs reported in late 2024 were not limited to one temporary employee furlough. Canoo was attempting to conserve cash while struggling to turn announced commercial interest into repeatable, economical production.

Furloughs and cost-cutting
On December 13, 2024, Canoo told the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had furloughed an additional 10 employees at its Justin, Texas facility. That brought the number of non-essential employees furloughed at that facility during the preceding 90 days to 50. The filing also referred to earlier furloughs at the Oklahoma City facility and an employee reorganization plan intended to reduce costs and preserve cash.
The filing warned that Canoo needed substantial additional capital to continue operating through the end of 2024. Contemporaneous reporting separately described a mandatory unpaid break for employees and an additional furlough involving 82 workers, as well as the idling of Canoo’s Oklahoma factory. Those figures came from different reports and employee groups, so they should not be added together as though they were one company-wide total.
Orders were not the same as completed production
Canoo had publicized or discussed large fleet opportunities, including arrangements involving 4,500 Walmart vans and 9,300 Kingbee vans. But announced fleet commitments do not automatically become completed sales, and they do not solve a manufacturer’s cash problem unless the company can build and deliver the vehicles at a sustainable cost.
At the time, Canoo cited a total of only 19 vehicles delivered. The company also faced production obstacles including incomplete factory equipment, pressure from unpaid suppliers and the expense of hand-building vehicles. Those are late-2024 operating figures, not current statistics.

A separate SEC-filed civil complaint in April 2026 described historical negotiations with a major retailer about a possible purchase of 4,500 vehicles and a related warrant transaction. The complaint helps show the scale of Canoo’s commercial ambitions, but it does not establish that the proposed transaction was completed.
Supplier and creditor pressure
The December 2024 reporting described supplier collection lawsuits and late payments that were affecting production. Canoo’s SEC filings also acknowledged ordinary-course litigation and creditor disputes. These matters are evidence of financial and operational pressure, but they should not be described as findings of fraud or final judgments unless a court later made such a finding.
What happened to Canoo’s assets?
After the Chapter 7 filing, the trustee determined that an urgent sale was needed to prevent the assets from losing most of their remaining value. The trustee negotiated an asset purchase agreement with WHS Energy Solutions, an affiliate of former Canoo CEO Anthony Aquila.
The agreement covered Canoo’s principal business assets and included the bankruptcy estate’s rights in the company’s trade-secret litigation against Harbinger Motors. The bankruptcy court approved the sale on April 9, 2025.

The transaction did not establish that WHS had restarted Canoo as an automaker. Buying assets from a bankrupt company is not the same as acquiring an operating business with active production, suppliers, employees and customer deliveries. The available records establish an asset sale, not a verified Canoo manufacturing revival.
The appeal over the Harbinger litigation rights
Harbinger Motors was founded by former Canoo employees. Canoo Technologies sued Harbinger in 2022, alleging that former employees had misappropriated trade secrets and confidential information and used them to compete against Canoo. Those allegations were claims in litigation, not established findings of liability.
Under the asset purchase agreement, WHS was to receive 10% of any net cash recovery from the Harbinger case, with the balance going to the bankruptcy estates. The agreement also required mutual consent from the trustee and buyer for a settlement. Harbinger challenged the arrangement, arguing that it gave the asset buyer improper influence over litigation owned by the estate.

On March 17, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware affirmed the bankruptcy court’s sale order and closed the appeal. The decision allowed the sale structure to proceed. It did not amount to a ruling that Harbinger had misappropriated Canoo’s information, nor did it restart Canoo’s business.
Factory equipment moved toward auction
In May 2026, AssetBuilt announced an eight-day auction event featuring the former Canoo manufacturing equipment auction from the company’s Oklahoma City electric-vehicle facility. The listed assets included robotics, engineering and automation equipment, maintenance and repair equipment, information-technology assets, facility-operation equipment and a MANZ automated battery cell-to-module production line.
The auction announcement is significant because it shows substantial physical manufacturing assets being liquidated or resold rather than being used in a continuing Canoo operation. It does not, by itself, establish who bought each item, whether any buyer intends to build Canoo vehicles, or whether particular equipment remains available.
What is happening with Canoo’s lawsuits?
Bankruptcy changed who controls Canoo’s litigation assets and how claims are handled. It did not automatically decide every lawsuit in Canoo’s favor or against it. The following matters should be separated carefully because they were at different stages and involved different parties.

The Harbinger settlement was still unresolved at the cutoff
The trustee’s July 8, 2026 motion sought approval of a settlement with the Harbinger defendants. A redacted public version of the settlement agreement was filed, while portions remained under seal. The listed hearing date was August 26, 2026.
Because the available research ended on August 12, 2026—before that hearing—the settlement’s final terms and approval cannot responsibly be stated as settled. What happened to Canoo’s public-company status?
Canoo is no longer properly analyzed as a normal publicly traded growth company seeking to fund expansion. An SEC-filed complaint states that the company’s former Nasdaq registration was terminated in June 2025. That detail is consistent with the broader legal and operational picture: the company entered Chapter 7 and stopped operating rather than continuing as a listed automaker.
This is not investment advice, and the existence of litigation claims or possible estate recoveries does not turn the former company back into an operating EV manufacturer. Any questions about creditor claims, securities claims or distributions belong to the bankruptcy process.

The research does not establish a reliable current manufacturer sales channel, active production program or verified consumer parts marketplace for Canoo vehicles. That does not prove that every Canoo on the road is unusable; it means buyers and owners should not assume that the former company is available to provide ordinary automaker support.
Anyone considering a used Canoo should investigate the individual vehicle rather than relying on the brand’s old announcements. Important checks include:
- the vehicle identification number, title and recall history;
- service records and evidence that the vehicle can be legally registered and insured in the buyer’s location;
- battery condition, charging equipment and diagnostic access;
- availability and cost of replacement parts before purchase;
- which independent repairers are willing and equipped to work on the vehicle; and
- whether the seller is offering a real, enforceable warranty or merely describing the vehicle as supported.
There is no researched evidence here of a dependable Amazon listing or other mainstream consumer channel for Canoo-specific parts, accessories, merchandise or manuals. Generic EV products are not a substitute for model-specific parts, and a search result that happens to contain the word Canoo is not proof of compatibility.
Timeline: from furloughs to liquidation

Its announced fleet opportunities were far larger than its reported deliveries, while the cost and difficulty of hand-building vehicles undermined the path to sustainable production.

The decisive development came less than a month later: Chapter 7 liquidation and an immediate shutdown. The subsequent asset sale and factory-equipment auction reinforce that the company’s physical manufacturing operation was being dismantled or transferred, not quietly restarted.

Canoo may still generate legal or administrative activity through its bankruptcy estate. The Harbinger matter, securities claims, the DD Global action, the Champ Key dispute, employee allegations and supplier claims may continue to produce court filings or settlements. But those proceedings are remnants of the company’s former business, not evidence that Canoo is returning to the road as a vehicle manufacturer.
