Eligible new-vehicle purchases and leases dated February 16, 2026 or later may qualify for up to $5,000 for a battery-electric or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, or up to $2,500 for a plug-in hybrid. The amount depends on the vehicle, transaction and, for leases, term; funding is limited.
Is Canada’s federal EV rebate back?
Yes. EVAP is the current federal incentive for eligible new electric-vehicle purchases and leases. It is separate from the former Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program. The federal government says EVAP is intended to support more than 840,000 new electric vehicles; the former iZEV program supported more than 560,000 over its six-year, $2.9-billion period. Transport Canada’s program questions and answers explain the distinction.
Although the program began March 31, 2026, eligible transactions dated February 16, 2026 or later may qualify. The scheduled end date is March 31, 2031, but the program can end earlier if its funding is used up. Applications are funded first come, first served. Transport Canada’s timing and funding rules are the reference for those dates.
How much is the incentive in 2026?
For eligible transactions processed in 2026, the maximum is $5,000 for a battery-electric vehicle or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, and $2,500 for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). These are maximum amounts, not guaranteed discounts: eligibility criteria, the transaction date, and lease length can affect what is applied. EVAP’s incentive amounts are scheduled to decline over the program’s five-year life; the future-year amounts should be checked against the current official schedule rather than assumed from the 2026 figures. Transport Canada’s overview describes the current amounts and program mechanics.

Which vehicles and transactions can qualify?
EVAP applies to eligible new vehicles purchased or leased by Canadians, organizations and businesses. The federal program overview sets out the purchase and lease incentive, while the vehicle list provides examples to help shoppers screen models. An absent model is not automatically disqualified: a vehicle not shown on the list may still qualify if it meets the program rules. Confirm the exact vehicle and transaction with an authorized seller before relying on the rebate. Transport Canada’s vehicle list includes this caveat.
Price and country of manufacture
For vehicles made outside Canada, the final transaction value must be $50,000 or less, and the vehicle must be manufactured in a country that has a free-trade agreement with Canada. Canadian-made EVs are exempt from the price cap. The limit concerns final transaction value, so ask the seller to confirm how the specific vehicle and transaction are assessed under EVAP. The federal incentives page summarizes the price and manufacturing conditions.

Powertrain category
| Vehicle type | 2026 maximum incentive |
|---|---|
| Battery-electric vehicle | Up to $5,000 |
| Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle | Up to $5,000 |
| Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle | Up to $2,500 |
These are 2026 maximums under EVAP, not a claim that every model or transaction in each category qualifies. Check the vehicle and transaction rules with the seller and the current federal program pages.
How leases are treated
An eligible lease must run for at least 12 months. A lease of 48 months or longer receives the full applicable incentive; eligible leases shorter than 48 months receive a prorated amount. The amount is based on when the dealer or authorized seller submits the eligibility assessment, so ask for the confirmed incentive at the time of signing rather than relying on an earlier quote. Transport Canada’s overview gives the lease conditions.

How to check your eligibility before signing
- Identify the exact vehicle. Check its powertrain, model and trim against Transport Canada’s vehicle list. Treat the list as a screening aid, not the final ruling; an unlisted vehicle may still meet the criteria.
- Check price and origin. For a non-Canadian-made vehicle, confirm that the final transaction value is no more than $50,000 and that it was made in a country with a free-trade agreement with Canada. Canadian-made EVs have no price cap under this rule.
- Confirm transaction details with an authorized seller. Ask whether the specific purchase or lease qualifies and what amount will be applied when the seller submits the eligibility assessment.
- If leasing, check the term. The lease must be at least 12 months, and only leases of 48 months or longer receive the full applicable incentive.
- Check your province or territory separately. Local programs have their own eligibility rules, which can change; verify the current terms with the relevant government before counting a provincial or territorial incentive in your budget.
Can you combine EVAP with a provincial rebate?
Potentially. The federal incentives page says provincial and territorial incentives may be combined with federal incentives, and identifies Manitoba, Quebec and Yukon as currently offering EV-related incentives. Local programs can cover new or used vehicles, home charger installation or shipping for used-vehicle purchases, depending on the jurisdiction. Check the current local program terms for your residence and vehicle; a listing is not confirmation that a particular buyer qualifies. The federal incentives page links to local government information.
A residential Level 2 charger is a separate purchase from the vehicle and is not covered by EVAP’s vehicle incentive. A provincial or territorial program may offer a separate charger-installation incentive, subject to its own rules.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Funding and how long the program may last
Transport Canada lists total EVAP funding of $2.275 billion over five years. Its program page reported $2.00 billion remaining as of September 1, 2026; that balance can change as claims are processed. Because funding is first come, first served, neither the scheduled 2031 end date nor a past balance guarantees that funding will remain available for a later transaction. Transport Canada’s EVAP page provides the program’s funding information.
The federal government announced the program on February 5, 2026, describing it as a $2.3-billion initiative. In that announcement, it reported EV market share of 15.4% in 2024, compared with 3.1% in 2019. The figures are the government’s reported market shares; its announcement discusses incentives alongside regulations and provincial or territorial measures, so the increase should not be attributed to rebates alone. The Prime Minister’s announcement provides that context.
