Yes—but only when the vehicle manufacturer approved different front and rear tire sizes for your exact vehicle. Otherwise, a mismatch can affect handling, braking, stability systems, or the drivetrain. Check the tire label and owner’s manual for your year, make, model, trim, and drivetrain before driving on an unfamiliar setup or buying replacements.
When different front and rear tire sizes are safe
Some vehicles are built with a factory “staggered” setup: the front and rear axles use different tire sizes by design. Michelin identifies this manufacturer-intended arrangement as an exception to the general recommendation to use the same tire type in all positions. Its guidance is to use the vehicle’s recommended size or an approved option and verify it in the owner’s manual or on the driver-side tire label: Michelin’s tire-size guidance.
A pair of matching tires on each axle is not enough to show that a setup is safe. The front and rear sizes must match an approved configuration for the particular vehicle. A different size can also be unsuitable even if the tires appear similar or share the same wheel-diameter number.
How to check whether your car has staggered tires
- Read each tire’s sidewall. Note the complete size marking for both front tires and both rear tires—not just the wheel diameter.
- Find the vehicle’s tire label. It is commonly on the driver’s door or door pillar. Compare the listed front and rear sizes with the tires on the car. Ford advises owners to use the tire label and contact a dealer if the recommended size is not shown: Ford owner-manual guidance.
- Check the owner’s manual. Look for approved optional wheel-and-tire packages, drivetrain-specific instructions, and rules for replacing fewer than four tires. The exact vehicle’s instructions take precedence over general tire-mixing advice.
- Compare the required specifications. Confirm load index, speed rating, tire type and construction, plus any vehicle-specific requirements—not only size.
- Ask for vehicle-specific guidance if anything conflicts. If the car is modified, the label is missing, or the tires do not match the manual, contact the manufacturer, dealer, or a qualified tire professional before driving or ordering replacements.
Tesla’s Model S manual, for example, tells owners with staggered wheels to retain the same arrangement when installing new wheels and to check the front and rear sizes marked on the tire sidewalls: Tesla Model S owner’s manual. That is an example of a vehicle-specific instruction, not a rule for other cars.

Why AWD and 4WD need particular care
On AWD and 4WD vehicles, differences in tire outside diameter can matter even when each axle has a matching pair. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association’s 2017 passenger and light-truck tire guidance says that if the owner’s manual gives no tire-mixing instructions, all four tires should have the same marked size unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies otherwise. It warns that even small outside-diameter differences may cause drivetrain damage or mechanical malfunction: USTMA tire care and service guidance.
Ford’s manual warns that major differences between front and rear tire sizes can cause an AWD system to stop functioning and default to rear-wheel drive, or damage the system. Kia’s 2026 owner manual says a different tire size can also cause ABS and ESC to work irregularly. These examples show why a size mismatch can affect more than the tires themselves; they do not establish a universal safe difference or tolerance. Follow the rules for the exact vehicle and drivetrain.

Replacing one, two, or four tires
Choose replacements that match an approved fitment and the required ratings. Michelin cautions against fitting a tire smaller than the supplied size or with less load-carrying capacity. Ford calls for matching the original tire size, load index, speed rating, and type. USTMA says replacing all four tires at once is preferred for continued optimal performance, while the vehicle manufacturer’s alternative instructions take precedence.
If replacing all four is not possible, do not assume that buying a matching pair for one axle is suitable for every vehicle. Kia’s 2026 manual recommends replacing tires in axle pairs when all four cannot be replaced, but AWD/4WD requirements vary; consult the exact owner’s manual before deciding. Do not apply another make’s tread-depth or diameter allowance to your car.

Can staggered tires be rotated?
A staggered fitment may prevent front-to-rear rotation because the front and rear sizes differ. Whether tires can move side to side depends on their directionality, asymmetric design, and the vehicle’s instructions. Check the tire markings and manual before using a rotation pattern; there is no single pattern that applies to every staggered setup.
