Why the $7,500 Model 3 claim is no longer current
The Internal Revenue Service says the New Clean Vehicle Credit is not available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. That means a new Model 3 acquisition now does not qualify for this federal credit, even though some Model 3 configurations appeared on earlier IRS eligibility lists. The IRS clean vehicle tax credits guidance states the cutoff and describes the transition rule.
The $7,500 figure was historically applicable to qualifying transactions under the rules then in effect. The IRS’s 2024 vehicle eligibility table listed the 2025 Tesla Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel Drive for a $7,500 credit. That entry was configuration-specific; it did not establish eligibility for every Model 3 or transaction, and it does not override the later acquisition cutoff. The IRS vehicle eligibility table identifies that listing.
Could a pre-deadline order still qualify?
Possibly. The transition rule can apply when you acquired the vehicle on or before September 30, 2025, even if you took possession later, provided all other requirements are met. The IRS defines acquisition for this purpose as entering a written binding contract and making a payment. A nominal down payment or vehicle trade-in can count as payment. Taking possession is when the vehicle is placed in service. So a buyer who met the acquisition deadline may take delivery afterward and still potentially claim the credit, subject to the vehicle, taxpayer, and reporting rules. An order or reservation alone is not enough if it was not accompanied by a binding written contract and payment by the cutoff.

What to check if you bought before the cutoff
- Confirm acquisition timing. Keep the signed binding contract and proof that a payment was made on or before September 30, 2025. A trade-in record or receipt for a nominal down payment may be relevant.
- Document when you took possession. The IRS treats possession as the placed-in-service date. Keep delivery and transaction records.
- Verify the exact vehicle. Eligibility listings depend on model year and configuration. The cited historical listing is for the 2025 Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel Drive, not every Model 3. Confirm the VIN and eligibility information for your transaction.
- Get the seller’s report. The seller must provide vehicle qualification information and report it to the IRS. Retain the time-of-sale report and ask the seller to resolve missing or inconsistent information.
- Check filing requirements. Use the applicable Form 8936 instructions for the tax year in which the vehicle was placed in service, and verify that you meet the remaining taxpayer requirements. If your records are incomplete or your circumstances are unusual, consult the seller or a qualified tax professional rather than relying on the model name alone.
