If you mean the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, some individual cars can now qualify for U.S. import under the federal 25-year safety rule—but the model name or model year alone does not establish eligibility. NHTSA counts from the car’s date of manufacture. EPA emissions requirements are separate, and import permission does not guarantee that a car can be registered in every state.
Which R34 Skyline GT-Rs are eligible for U.S. import?
The title appears to refer to the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, but that identification is an inference; the available vehicle guide describes the R34 GT-R generation as spanning 1999–2002. That generation-level range is context, not a legal eligibility schedule. Each car must be evaluated using its documented manufacture date.
NHTSA allows a motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old to be imported without regard to whether it complies with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The 25 years run from the date of manufacture—not the model year, first-registration date, or the date a particular generation began. NHTSA’s importation FAQ explains the rule and acceptable age evidence.
That means R34s do not all become eligible at once. A car’s advertised year or generation designation is not enough: verify the manufacture date for the specific chassis before committing to buy or ship it.

How do you prove the car’s manufacture date?
Check the permanent manufacturer label for a date of manufacture. If the label does not identify the date, NHTSA says the importer should retain documentation establishing the vehicle’s age. Examples include an invoice showing the first sale, a registration document establishing age, or a statement from a recognized vehicle historical society. Ask the seller for clear copies before payment and make sure the paperwork identifies the exact vehicle.
The vehicle is declared under Box 1 of the HS-7 form for the 25-year FMVSS exemption. The form and supporting age evidence should agree with the car’s identity and manufacture date; an incorrect or incomplete declaration can complicate entry.

Does the 25-year rule also cover EPA emissions?
No. NHTSA’s 25-year rule addresses federal motor vehicle safety standards. EPA emissions treatment is a separate question. CBP describes an EPA exclusion for vehicles at least 21 years old that are in original, unmodified condition. EPA interprets the engine-equivalence requirement to mean that the engine must be identical to the one originally installed—that is, the same model and configuration. CBP outlines the import process and the EPA exclusion; EPA explains its engine-equivalence interpretation and recommends checking with its Imports Hotline.
A qualifying manufacture date under NHTSA’s rule therefore does not settle EPA eligibility. A swapped or modified engine may affect the emissions path even if the car is old enough for the safety exemption. Establish the engine’s identity and configuration, and confirm the applicable EPA treatment before shipping.

What paperwork and import costs should you plan for?
CBP says an HS-7 Declaration must be filed at import to identify the basis for entry. Its guidance also identifies proof of ownership and EPA Form 3520-1 among the documents importers need to address. Classic or antique status does not, by itself, eliminate customs duty: CBP says duty remains based on the vehicle’s value. Requirements can depend on the shipment and entry details, so confirm the applicable declaration codes, documents, and duty treatment with CBP and an import professional before shipment.
What to verify before paying or shipping
- Confirm the exact car. Match the chassis and vehicle identity on the seller’s documents to the car being sold; do not rely on a model-year listing or generation label to establish age.
- Document manufacture age. Obtain the permanent manufacturer-label date or acceptable supporting evidence, then confirm that the car is at least 25 years old when it is imported.
- Check the engine and modifications. Record the installed engine’s model and configuration and ask for evidence of the original setup. Confirm the EPA path for that specific configuration with EPA or a qualified import professional.
- Settle the entry paperwork. Confirm the HS-7 basis and Box 1 declaration, EPA Form 3520-1 treatment, ownership documents, and shipment-specific customs requirements.
- Check destination-state registration separately. Federal import eligibility does not establish state registration, inspection, or emissions compliance. Ask the state motor-vehicle agency or a specialist familiar with the destination state what will be required for road use.
- Get the scope of professional help in writing. If you hire a sourcing, import, or inspection service, compare its experience with the R34 specifically, document review, engine and manufacture-date verification, quote inclusions, and destination-state support. No current provider terms or comparable quotes are established here.
Does an imported R34 automatically qualify for road use?
No. The federal age exemption and import declarations address federal import requirements; they do not guarantee that a particular state will register the vehicle or approve it for road use. State requirements are not resolved by the federal guidance cited here. Check the rules where the car will be registered before buying, not after it arrives.

Can you still find parts for an R34?
Wilwood announced brake-kit options for Nissan Skyline models, including GT-R variants, in a release dated February 17, 2026. That announcement does not establish current inventory or fitment for every R34. Verify chassis, trim, and existing brake configuration with the manufacturer or seller before ordering; the announcement alone is not proof that a listed kit fits a specific car.
