Federal import eligibility does not guarantee that a state will register the vehicle.
Can you import a Nissan Elgrand to the US?
A qualifying Elgrand may be imported under federal rules for older vehicles. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says a motor vehicle at least 25 years old can be imported without regard to compliance with applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The 25 years are counted from the vehicle’s date of manufacture—not simply its model year. See CBP’s vehicle-import guidance for the applicable entry requirements.
That age-based safety exemption is not a blanket approval for every Elgrand, nor does it settle emissions eligibility or state registration. Check the specific vehicle’s manufacture date, configuration, documents, and intended state of title before arranging shipment.
How do the 25-year safety rule and 21-year emissions rule differ?

These are separate federal requirements. Meeting the EPA age threshold does not make a vehicle 25 years old for the DOT safety exemption. For emissions-related import guidance, consult the EPA’s vehicle and engine import guidance; for safety import questions, consult NHTSA’s importation guidance.

How do you prove an Elgrand is old enough?
Use the date of manufacture, not a model-year assumption. CBP says the manufacture date should appear on a permanent manufacturer label. If the label does not identify it, supporting documentation may be needed to establish the date. Keep records that substantiate the vehicle’s age and ownership, and verify that the documentation matches the specific vehicle being entered.
CBP also says importers must file an HS-7 Declaration identifying the basis for entry. Review the current form and entry instructions for the vehicle’s circumstances rather than assuming the age exemption removes paperwork requirements.

What is the Nissan Elgrand like?
The Elgrand is a Japanese-market luxury minivan. Nissan’s 2017 brochure lists one configuration with a 2,488 cc QR25DE engine and CVT, plus an overall length of 4,915 mm and a 3,000 mm wheelbase. Those are specifications for that brochure configuration only; they should not be treated as specifications for every Elgrand year, generation, or trim. For a particular vehicle, confirm its exact year, manufacture date, powertrain, trim, seating layout, condition, and parts support. The cited brochure alone does not establish specifications across the full model range.

Does federal import eligibility mean you can register it in every state?
No such guarantee follows from the federal age exemptions. Registration, inspection, and road-use requirements depend on the state where you plan to title the Elgrand, and state-by-state rules are not established here. Contact that state’s motor vehicle agency before purchase or shipment and ask what documents and inspections it requires for the specific imported vehicle.

What to check before buying or shipping one
- Confirm the manufacture date. Check the permanent manufacturer label and obtain supporting documentation if the date is not identified there. Verify that the vehicle will reach 25 years from manufacture for the DOT safety exemption by the relevant import date.
- Check emissions eligibility separately. Determine whether the vehicle meets the EPA 21-year original, unmodified-condition exemption, including the applicable engine and emissions-control requirements if its engine has been replaced.
- Gather entry documents. Retain proof of age and ownership, and identify the appropriate basis for entry on the HS-7 Declaration.
- Ask the destination state about title and registration. Confirm its requirements before committing to shipping; federal entry eligibility is not a state registration decision.
- Evaluate the exact vehicle. Verify its configuration, condition, and parts availability rather than relying on specifications from a different Elgrand year or trim.
