Potentially—but the new development is a training opportunity, not a guarantee that you can earn an endorsement on an electric motorcycle everywhere. The LiveWire S4 Honcho Street has met the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s criteria for use in rider training programs. Electrek reported on October 5, 2026, that it will join the MSF RiderCoach Tour demonstration fleet, where coaches can use it in exercises and providers can evaluate it. Which schools will adopt it, and whether a particular course will qualify you for a license, remain local questions.
What changed: an electric motorcycle is entering MSF training evaluation
The S4 Honcho Street is a street electric motorcycle with no manual clutch or gearbox. That could let a student practise motorcycle handling on an electric machine without first learning to coordinate a conventional clutch and transmission. Electrek’s report says the model met MSF criteria and is set to join the RiderCoach Tour demo fleet; it does not say that the motorcycle is already available at ordinary MSF courses nationwide. Electrek’s October 5, 2026 report describes coaches using it in exercises and training providers evaluating it.
That distinction matters: meeting criteria and appearing in a demonstration fleet are not the same as a local course offering the bike, or a licensing authority accepting that course in place of its required test.
Can you get a motorcycle endorsement after training on an electric motorcycle?
Possibly, depending on your jurisdiction and the specific course. Before enrolling, ask the provider and your licensing authority whether the course uses an electric motorcycle, whether successful completion waives or satisfies the skills test, and whether the endorsement carries any vehicle or transmission restriction. The available report does not identify adopting schools, locations, or endorsement rules for a particular state.

- Check whether the resulting license has any restrictions related to vehicle type or transmission.
- Verify course dates, cost, location, and the motorcycle’s size and weight directly with the provider.
Do you have to learn a clutch if you only plan to ride electric?
A clutch-free training motorcycle may remove a skill that is unnecessary for operating a clutch-free electric motorcycle. It does not teach manual clutch control, so riders who later want to ride a conventional motorcycle may need to learn that skill separately. The potential benefit is therefore most relevant to someone whose intended motorcycle is electric; it is not evidence that licensing has become universally easier or that manual skills no longer matter.
LiveWire Head of Commercial Jon Bekefy described electric motorcycles as a more natural first step for some riders, and said the Honcho could offer a more approachable way to learn. That is LiveWire’s view, quoted by Electrek—not an independently measured finding about how much easier licensing is or how many riders will choose this route.

An “electric bike” and an electric motorcycle may have different license rules
The phrase “electric bike” is often used for both pedal-assist e-bikes and electric motorcycles, but the legal categories can differ. A rule for an electric-assisted bicycle does not automatically apply to a street electric motorcycle. For example, Washington law says no driver’s license is required to operate an electric-assisted bicycle. California Highway Patrol guidance describes Class 1–3 e-bikes separately from motorcycles and says an M-1 or M-2 endorsement is required to operate a motorcycle. These examples illustrate variation; they do not determine the rule where you live.
Check your own state or territory’s licensing authority for the vehicle classification and endorsement required, and ask what vehicle is permitted for both training and any licensing test. Do not assume that an e-bike’s rules cover an electric motorcycle just because both use batteries.
