Yes. A compatible motorcycle dashboard can display live data supplied by the bike’s ECU, commonly over CAN or another supported protocol. But “straight from the ECU” does not mean every dash works with every bike or that every ECU provides the same channels. Before buying, match the exact motorcycle year and ECU variant to the dash, wiring loom, connector and supported data list.
What does an ECU-connected motorcycle dashboard do?
An ECU-connected dash reads information made available by the engine control unit and displays selected channels, such as engine speed or temperature. Depending on the product, it may also log data for later review. Some systems replace the factory instrument cluster and use a model-specific loom; others are add-on displays or loggers connected by cable.
The ECU is only one possible data source. A dash may also use GPS, internal accelerometer and gyro sensors, analog or digital inputs, or optional sensor expansions. Those sources can supply information the ECU connection alone does not provide.
What information can the ECU send to the dash?
The available data depends on the ECU and the dash’s protocol support. AiM’s MXP product page lists examples of channels that may be sampled through a cable connection, including RPM, engine load, throttle position, oil, air and water temperatures, oil pressure, battery voltage, speed, gear and lambda value. AiM says the channels available depend on the specific ECU; the list is not a guarantee that every bike exposes every item.

Some displays can combine those ECU channels with GPS, inertial measurements, external sensors and calculated “math” channels. For example, AiM describes the MXP 1.3 as a dash logger with a 6-inch TFT screen, customizable layouts, internal accelerometer and gyro, GPS09 support, analog and digital inputs, and predefined math channels. Three kinds of ECU-connected motorcycle products
Replacement instrument clusters
A replacement cluster takes the place of the original instruments and may communicate with the factory ECU over CAN through a dedicated, bike-specific loom. Starlane’s DaVinci range illustrates this approach: its product pages identify plug-and-play looms for particular motorcycle applications and describe software for reading factory ECU data. Fitment can be tightly limited by model and ECU version. For example, Starlane identifies an RSV4 application for the standard Magneti Marelli ECU and excludes the Aprilia Racing APX ECU. A replacement dash may add features such as GPS, track libraries, inertial data or optional sensor expansions, depending on the model. Do not assume those features—or compatibility with a particular ECU—apply to every product in a manufacturer’s range.
Add-on display loggers
An add-on logger connects to the bike without necessarily replacing the factory cluster. AiM’s MXP is an example of a motorcycle dash display/logger with ECU cable connectivity and additional data inputs. Its screen, layout and sensor capabilities are product-specific, so confirm the exact configuration and included parts.

ECU cables and logging kits
A kit may provide a cable for acquiring ECU data, or offer selectable sensors and expansions, without including a dashboard. AiM Technologies describes its motorcycle ECU kits with the phrase “Log Data Straight From Your ECU,” but a cable or logging kit should not be mistaken for a replacement instrument cluster. How to check whether a dash will work with your bike
- Identify the exact motorcycle: record its make, model, year and, if relevant, market or trim. A listing for the same model name may not cover every year or variant.
- Confirm the ECU variant: ask the manufacturer or seller whether the dash supports the ECU actually fitted to your bike. ECU variant exclusions can matter even when the motorcycle model matches.
- Verify communications and wiring: check the supported protocol, connector and whether the correct model-specific loom or ECU cable is included. “Plug and play” describes a specific application, not universal fitment.
- Compare the channel list: ask which ECU channels are available for your exact ECU. Do not assume that a product’s example list is supported in full on your motorcycle.
- Check what else the system needs: establish whether GPS, sensors, expansions, software or other parts are included, optional or sold separately.
- Confirm factory functions and intended use: find out whether the original warning indicators, turn signals, lighting controls and immobilizer behavior are retained, and whether the setup is suitable for your planned road or track use.
What to compare before choosing a system

Important limits to keep in mind
- “ECU compatible” is not a complete fitment guarantee. Compatibility may depend on the ECU variant, year, protocol and wiring—not only the motorcycle’s name.
- A racing replacement may omit factory controls. Starlane notes that some racing variants do not manage turn signals and lights. Confirm the specific model’s retained functions and suitability for your intended use.
- General racing displays are not automatically motorcycle products. LD Performance’s Racing Dash 2 page describes CAN or serial ECU connections and direct sensor inputs, but does not establish motorcycle-specific fitment. Treat it as a general racing-display example, not a confirmed motorcycle replacement cluster. LD Performance Racing Dash 2.
- Phone apps are a different category. Ecumaster’s 2025–2026 catalogue describes eDASH PRO as an iOS and Android app for a customizable dash with real-time ECU data and alarms, with a Q1 2026 release date and a stated free price.
